~ ~ ~ Le'Andria Johnson's Pastor Asks Church Not to Ostracize Gospel Star for 'Misguided Passion'


Gospel singer Le'Andria Johnson's pastor, Tim Rogers, says her irreverent criticism of the Church was "misguided passion" and he hopes Christians don't "throw her away altogether" because there is a place for her in the Kingdom.

"The Bible says if a brother be overtaken in a fault, if you're really spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness considering yourself," Rogers, a fellow gospel singer who leads The Hope Church in Blytheville, Arkansas, told The Christian Post earlier this week.

"A lot of preachers have called me to say she said things that they can't say. And they are sick of the politics of the church. Me and her did have a talk about her passion being guided because that's what I understand that it was the other day. It was misguided passion," he added.

Johnson won the hearts of Christians nationwide with her talent and candor when she won the BET gospel singing competition "Sunday Best" eight years ago.

Her turn in the spotlight has been punctuated by behavior that some Christians say is unbecoming for someone who professes to be a practicing Christian.

Johnson recently slammed the Church and Bishop Marvin Winans in a scathing expletive-laced critique. She also vented her frustrations with a Christian culture she described as hypocritical. Her outburst caused her to lose a booking for the recently concluded Essence Festival in New Orleans.

"You know what I'm tired of though? ... I'm tired of being Le'Andria Johnson that y'all know of," she said. "And Ima tell you like this: I could be on a Kirk Franklin level. I could be on a Mary level. Yolanda Adams, Marvin Sapp, Fred Hammond. All the gospel greats ... all the R&B. Beyoncé, Brandy. ... If I played the game, I could really be on that level. I could, but I'm not 'bout playin' no games, though."

It was after that outburst that Essence organizers reportedly removed Johnson from a slated tribute to Dottie Peoples. She said she wasn't going to pretend to be someone she wasn't just to become a gospel superstar and called out Church leaders for being hypocritical while dismissing the Church as a business.

Johnson apologized on Monday for her delivery but remained unrepentant about her criticism of the machinery behind Christian culture.

"You know Christianity, it's just a lot that's going on. So the way I said it, using the F-bomb, I apologize to the fans of mine that do go to church. I do apologize if I've offended you," she said.

Rogers explained that while he had not seen the videos of Johnson's rants online, he spoke with her about them and said he encouraged the apology.

"She is a member of our church. So she called me and she told me what happened. She told me what she said. She asked me did I look at it. She told me she was coming home to come to church. We had a chance to sit down. I know Le'Andria. I know her heart. A lot of people in the world they only know her by her gifting. And this is something I'm learning about the Church," he said.

"The Church will accept your gifts but they really don't want that person. That's why when the person is singing you ignore the gifts. And the gift is alright. It makes us feel good until we know who you really are. Le'Andria is a nice person. She means well. She just doesn't have a filter. And she has a lot of learning to do," he said.

"I think she is a wonderful person and I still think she has a place in the kingdom. She just doesn't fit well in a box. And you know religion has a way of boxing you in that you can only be this. You can never be anything other than that. In order to be accepted in this circle you can only be this and you can only talk like this. Well Le'Andria is not that person. But she's learning. I just hope the church doesn't throw her away altogether," Rogers said.

Musician Gil Scott-Heron dies at 62

Musician Gil Scott-Heron, who helped lay the groundwork for rap by fusing minimalistic percussion, political expression and spoken-word poetry on songs such as "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," died Friday at age 62.

A friend, Doris C. Nolan, who answered the telephone listed for his Manhattan recording company, said he died in the afternoon at St. Luke's Hospital after becoming sick upon returning from a European trip.

"We're all sort of shattered," she said.

Scott-Heron's influence on rap was such that he sometimes was referred to as the Godfather of Rap, a title he rejected.

"If there was any individual initiative that I was responsible for it might have been that there was music in certain poems of mine, with complete progression and repeating `hooks,' which made them more like songs than just recitations with percussion," he wrote in the introduction to his 1990 collection of poems, "Now and Then."

He referred to his signature mix of percussion, politics and performed poetry as bluesology or Third World music. But then he said it was simply "black music or black American music."

"Because Black Americans are now a tremendously diverse essence of all the places we've come from and the music and rhythms we brought with us," he wrote.

Nevertheless, his influence on generations of rappers has been demonstrated through sampling of his recordings by artists, including Kanye West.

Scott-Heron recorded the song that would make him famous, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," which critiqued mass media, for the album "125th and Lenox" in Harlem in the 1970s. He followed up that recording with more than a dozen albums, initially collaborating with musician Brian Jackson. His most recent album was "I'm New Here," which he began recording in 2007 and was released in 2010.

Scott-Heron was born in Chicago on April 1, 1949. He was raised in Jackson, Tenn., and in New York before attending college at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.

Throughout his musical career, he took on political issues of his time, including apartheid in South Africa and nuclear arms. He had been shaped by the politics of the 1960s and the black literature, especially of the Harlem Renaissance.

Jon Stewart and Bill O'Reilly faceoff over rapper Common

Bill O'Reilly and his favorite comic foil -- Jon Stewart -- are back at it.

The two faced off Monday over the Obama Administration's controversial decision to invite rapper Common to the White House for a poetry event.

The Fox News host said he was "shocked" that Stewart couldn't understand why conservatives thought it was inappropriate to ask Common - who wrote a song 11 years ago that defended a convicted cop killer - to perform.

"I am saying that when a president invites someone, in this case the First Lady, the resume has to be put in front of them and they have to select someone who is almost unimpeachable," O'Reilly declared.

Stewart argued that the Grammy-winning artist wasn't "celebrating" Assata Shakur, who was involved in a deadly New Jersey shootout, but simply believed she was convicted unjustly and expressed that in the song.

Further, the Comedy Central host argued, O'Reilly's standard of outlawing White House performances by any musical defender of convicted killers would mean that Bob Dylan, Bono and Bruce Springsteen couldn't perform at the White House either.

"Why are you drawing the line at Common?" asked Stewart. "There is a selective outrage machine here at Fox that pettifogs only when it suits the narrative that suits them. This guy is in the cross hairs when he shouldn't be."

The two continued to bicker, with O'Reilly insisting Common took it too far when he went to visit his musical muse in Cuba.

"That's enough for a sitting president to say, 'You know what, this guy may be radioactive. I'm not doing it,"' O'Reilly said.
Stewart couldn't resist one final jab before the interview was over, telling O'Reilly that he shouldn't take lyrics so literally.

"Songs aren't literal, you know that right?" Stewart said. "When the Weather Girls sing 'It's Raining Men,' it's not really a precipitation of males."

Biggie's Murder Investigation Resumes....Will Anyone Cooperate??

Investigation Into Death Of Notorious B.I.G. Heats Up


A task force made up of local and federal law enforcement agencies is actively pursuing leads into the 1997 slaying of hip hop artist Christopher Wallace, better known as Biggie Smalls or Notorious B.I.G., according to two sources familiar with the investigation.

According to one law enforcement source, the investigation into the 13-year-old unsolved case was "reinvigorated" months ago as a result of new information, but the source would not elaborate further because of the ongoing investigation that includes the Los Angeles Police Department, L.A. County District Attorney's Office and the FBI.

On March 9, 1997, Wallace, 24, was shot and killed while riding in a Suburban that was driving away from a music industry party at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles police said a lone gunman in a Chevy Impala pulled alongside the Suburban and opened fire on Wallace, who was in the passenger seat. Witnesses described the suspect as being an African-American man wearing a suit and bow tie.

The main theory behind shooting was payback in a so-called rap war between East and West Coast hip hop artists and their record companies- Bad Boy Entertainment in New York, which represented Wallace, and Death Row Records, headed by Marion "Suge" Knight, in Los Angeles. Six months earlier in Las Vegas, a gunman opened fire on a car driven by Knight, killing one of his top artists Tupac Shakur.

That murder remains unsolved also.

Lil Wayne is a free man!

He has been released from the Rikers Island jail complex in New York after serving eight months for his involvement in a gun case, it was announced Thursday.

His family and friends are planning a welcome home bash this weekend in Miami.

Lil Wayne (real name: Dwayne Carter Jr.) pleaded guilty in October 2009 to attempted weapon possession, admitting he'd had a loaded, semiautomatic .40-caliber gun on his bus after a Manhattan concert.

"I was never scared, worried nor bothered by the situation" behind bars, he said Tuesday through Weezythanxyou.com, which he set up to give fans a glimpse of his life in jail.

During his time behind bars, the rapper dropped his latest album, "I Am Not a Human Being," which hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart last month.

Was Barack Obama an extra in the 1993 rap video hit for "Whoomp! (There it is)"?

Of all the conspiracy theories that have attached themselves to the president like sticky oil globs to a beach, the one that surfaced online this week based on the grainy YouTube of a 17-year-old music video by the Atlanta duo Tag Team has to be the most mischevious -- and harmlessly fun. Proof, if anyone needed it, that even in These Serious Times summer silly season goofs will still be had.

Gawker kicked off the speculation on Saturday when it picked up on the musings of conservative site Tennessee Sons of Liberty and some minor discussions on hip hop music boards to spin out one of its unique online investigations -- basically a ton of Googling plus close reading -- and concluded that the answer was no, "Sorry, Internet, it's not Obama. But as far as conspiracy theories go, it's way better than that whole secret Muslim thing."

A dominoes-playing extra wearing gold rings and a Compton hat (so early '90s!) at 1:02 in the video was not, in fact, the 31-year-old Harvard Law School graduate, but rather someone who looked a bit like the America's first black president as a young man only because the resolution on the YouTube video was so poor and the screenshot from it first posted was captured at a moment of fleeting resemblence later video moments undermined.

But in the new media environment, a funny question without a definitive answer can be too good to check -- and by Monday the idea had been picked up by CNN, The Fox Nation and variety of other outlets, both MSM and blog.

"I don't think it is, but it would be quite a story if it was him in the video...Obama does like rap music, and if you remember, Jay-Z was recently at the WH, sitting down in the Situation Room. Obama also met with Ludacris before becoming President," HotAirPundit opined.

Gawker came back to the subject on Wednesday:

This past weekend we examined the evidence for and against an Obama cameo and reached the conclusion that, no, Obama did not take time out in 1993 from his career as a community organizer in Chicago to film a 2-second cameo with an Atlanta rap duo.

But this is the Internet, where conspiracies die harder than Bruce Willis in a series of 1990s action films. Over 200,000 people have read our original post; thousands of other outlets picked it up. CNN actually asked the White House for a comment. They "did not immediately respond."

A suspicious silence! And Obama's potential cameo is now in the Wikipedia entry for "Whoomp (There it is)" which means it is a true fact for all of eternity. Pandora's box has been opened, and the Whoomper Conspiracy will probably never die: Says commenter patlippert "I won't believe it's not him until he shows us his resume, which if he did and it proved me wrong, I'll claim it was faked."

At this point, of course, someone had to come in and referee the situation with more than Internet evidence. Enter Politifact, the truth-squadding site now working with ABC's "This Week" to fact-check the Sunday talkers. They reported:

We tracked down half the Tag Team, the rapper DC the Brain Supreme who also goes by the name Cecil Glenn. He first heard of the Obama video rumor on Saturday, and has since received calls from New York magazine and Inside Edition.

"This is like an episode of South Park," Glenn said. "You can't pay for that kind of publicity."

Glenn recounted the taping of the video in Atlanta, saying he gathered extras through word of mouth. A friend also put out an open invitation on a local radio station. The video was filmed at an Atlanta fairground.

Glenn said he doesn't think the man in the video is Obama. "It doesn't add up. It's hard to say he was in Atlanta and said, 'Ooh, I want to be in the Whoomp! (There It Is) video.' "

But, Glenn said, "I can't be for sure because that was a real big video shoot and thousands of people showed up." ...

Finally, the White House put the issue to rest. Spokeswoman Kate Bedingfield declared the rumors untrue.

"It is not him," she said.

But by then the meme was off and by nightfall Tuesday, it hopped to "The Colbert Report":

And once it was on Colbert, well...

Wednesday morning saw stories on ABC News "For the record, I have never asked Gibbs about the 2 Live Crew song, but then again, we haven't had a briefing in several days," Jake Tapper wrote -- and elsewhere across the Web.

Hollywood often relegates its most interesting actresses to genre films or supporting roles, and Queen Latifah's been no exception. But she should be a leading lady, and she knows it: That's why she produced "Just Wright" herself.

As it turns out, director Sanaa Hamri depends a little too much on her charismatic star in the hopes that Latifah can elevate average material. And to an impressive degree, she does. But ultimately, this one-of-a-kind woman deserves more than a one-size-fits-all romance.

The title refers to Leslie Wright (Latifah), a physical therapist living in New Jersey with marriage-obsessed parents (James Pickens Jr., Pam Grier) and a social-climbing best friend, Morgan (Paula Patton). Though Leslie's the die-hard Nets fan, it's beautiful Morgan who snares an NBA fiance, All-Star player Scott McKnight (rapper Common).

When Scott shreds his knee, and his prospects, Morgan swiftly moves out of his Manhattan mansion. Meanwhile, Leslie moves in, as a full-time therapist and psychological cheerleader.

What should happen next is that Leslie and Scott strike unmistakable sparks and fall madly in love. What actually happens is that Common and Latifah build a beautiful friendship, while awkwardly fulfilling a story line that pushes them together in the most obvious ways.

The chemistry between the leads is more cozy than sexy, but the biggest issue is Latifah's noticeable - and admirable - discomfort with the rom-com clichés found throughout Michael Elliot's screenplay. When characters plot to snag a husband, for example, or she's required to swan down the stairs like Cinderella, this icon of individuality looks distinctly uncomfortable.

On the other hand, when she gets to banter with Scott's mom (a delightful Phylicia Rashad), or cheer on the Nets - suspend your skepticism at their success - she relaxes and has a genuinely good time. In those moments, so do we.

Latifah has talent and personality to spare, so it would be great to see her taking on more romantic roles. But to sell herself short in the process? Clearly, even she knows that's just wrong.

Hip-Hop diva Mary J. Blige smacked her husband for checking out a waitress at her CD release party this week and warned him, "You ain't going Chris Brown on me," witnesses said.

The "No More Drama" songstress lashed out at hubby Kendu Isaacs at the Tuesday night party at the M2 Ultra lounge in Chelsea, witnesses said.

One party goer told the Daily News that the 38-year-old Grammy winner flew into a jealous rage because Isaacs was paying too much attention to a waitress at the club.

"Mary hauled off and smacked him," the source said.

Blige then warned Isaacs not to even think about retaliating. "She said, 'You ain't going to go Chris Brown on me, are you?'" according to a source.

Brown beat up ex-girlfriend Rihanna in June after she caught him reading a text from an old flame. The now-infamous incident led to Brown pleading guilty to felony assault charges.

Blige, who is promoting her new album "Stronger With Each Tear," denied Wednesday night that the incident with her husband took place.

"They're as happy as can be," spokeswoman Karynne Tencer said. "They're spending the holidays together with their three children. Everything's great."

A friend of Blige suggested that some "haters" at the club may have "misunderstood a joke Mary and Kendu were sharing."
