“34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did itto one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.”

CHURCH & POLITICS - 21st CENTURY CHURCHES SHOULD ENGAGE IN POLITICS (CHURCH & STATE)

CHURCH & POLITICS - 21st CENTURY CHURCHES SHOULD ENGAGE IN POLITICS (CHURCH & STATE):

CHURCHES SHOULD ALSO REGISTER VOTERS.

CHURCHES SHOULD NOT ENDORSE CANDIDATES, HOWEVER CHURCHES SHOULD ENCOURAGE VOTING.

THE IRS SHOULD NOT PENALIZE CHURCHES FOR ENGAGING IN POLITICS (JOHNSON AMENDMENT).

****** Trump signs order seeking to allow churches to engage in more political activity

President Trump on Thursday signed an executive order aimed at making it easier for churches to participate in politics, seeking to deliver on a campaign pledge to a community that overwhelmingly backed in him in last year’s election.

The order, which Trump unveiled with great fanfare in a Rose Garden ceremony, was cheered by some conservative Christians but seen as a disappointment by others, who said it fell short of the broader changes they wanted as part of a highly anticipated measure on religious liberties.

The order, Trump said, removes the financial threat faced by tax-exempt churches from the Internal Revenue Service when pastors speak out on behalf of political candidates. But some experts said it amounts to a mostly symbolic gesture with little likelihood of changing how the agency polices the issue.

Trump’s order — unveiled on a National Day of Prayer celebrated with religious leaders — also directs his administration to consider developing regulations related to religious objectors to an Obama administration mandate, scaled back by the courts, that required contraception services as part of health plans.

“For too long the federal government has used the power of the state as a weapon against people of faith, bullying and even punishing Americans for following their religious beliefs,” Trump said, later telling those gathered for the event that “you’re now in a position to say what you want to say . . . No one should be censoring sermons or targeting pastors.”

The sweep of the order was considerably narrower than a leaked February draft, which alarmed civil libertarians and gay rights and other liberal advocacy groups.

Among other things, that version included a provision that could have allowed federal contractors to discriminate against LGBT employees or single mothers on the basis of faith.

The order released Thursday instead included a blanket statement that “it shall be the policy of the executive branch to vigorously enforce Federal law’s robust protections for religious freedom.” Trump said he would direct the Justice Department to develop rules to guide that process.

Gregory S. Baylor, senior counsel for the faith group Alliance Defending Freedom, was among the Christian conservatives to criticize the order, calling it “disappointingly vague” and questioning whether the IRS would follow through with Trump’s directive.

“We strongly encourage the president to see his campaign promise through to completion,” Baylor said.

Even the scaled-back version prompted threats of lawsuits, although some groups said that after reviewing the order they would hold fire on any legal action, arguing that it will have little impact.

“Today’s executive order signing was an elaborate photo-op with no discernible policy outcome,” American Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Anthony D. Romero said in a statement. “After careful review of the order’s text we have determined that the order does not meaningfully alter the ability of religious institutions or individuals to intervene in the political process.”

As a candidate and shortly after taking office, Trump declared that he would “totally destroy” what is known as the Johnson Amendment, the long-standing ban on churches and other tax-exempt organizations supporting political candidates.

The provision applies to all tax-exempt organizations, including many colleges and foundations. But Christian groups have complained most vociferously about its use.

The provision is written in the tax code and would require an act of Congress to repeal fully. An administration official said Trump was instead directing the IRS to “exercise maximum enforcement discretion of the prohibition.”

The language in the order is less robust: It merely instructs the administration not to take “adverse action” against churches or religious figures for political speech that has “not ordinarily been treated as participation or intervention in a political campaign” for or against a candidate for office.

Rabbi David Saperstein, former ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom, said that as crafted, Trump’s order isn’t likely to make a significant difference in enforcement practices.

“People committed to the Johnson Amendment will be troubled he’s continuing down a path toward changing existing law,” Saperstein said. “Those who are advocating for a significant change are going to be disappointed.”

Ralph Reed, chairman of the Faith & Freedom Coalition and a leading advocate of repealing the prohibition, called Trump’s order a good first step, saying that it removed “a sword of Damocles that has hung over the faith community for decades.” But he added that his group would still like to see congressional action.

Violations of the Johnson Amendment are infrequently pursued by the IRS, but evangelicals say it has been used selectively against them, preventing Christian leaders from speaking freely in church.

The amendment is named for Lyndon B. Johnson, who introduced it in the Senate in 1954, nine years before he became president.

Under current law, churches are free to promote political candidates but must forgo such activity to obtain tax-exempt status.

The repeal of the Johnson Amendment is also being written into the tax legislation being developed in the House of Representatives, according to congressional aides. But both the provision and the broader legislation face substantial hurdles.

In a letter Wednesday to Republican leaders of Congress, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and other Democrats expressed concern that repealing the amendment would allow tax-exempt churches and other nonprofits to be used to skirt campaign finance laws.

“Using charitable causes as shell companies to evade campaign finance transparency and contribution limits would increase the flow of dark money in politics,” the letter said.

How far-reaching the order should be has been the subject of internal White House debate for weeks, with Vice President Pence actively engaged in the deliberations and advocating for a more conservative posture, while Ivanka Trump and some other advisers arguing that the administration’s actions should be more moderate.

“There definitely was internal debate over what would be in the final draft,” a White House official said.

The president’s advisers agreed that Trump must live up to his campaign promise — repeated in the early days of his presidency — that he would destroy the Johnson Amendment. But Ivanka Trump and other advisers appealed to the president that he should resist taking further hard-line action, arguing that simply easing federal enforcement of the amendment would be enough to satisfy conservative activists.

“I don’t think it comes as any surprise that Ivanka wanted to be involved in the process,” the White House official said. “There wasn’t an intense debate internally, a showdown, and Ivanka and Jared were pitted against Pence. It really wasn’t like that. I think that Ivanka did a good job — not as first daughter but as assistant to the president — for making the case for what she thought was in the best interest of this presidency with regard to this executive order. Others made the case for what they thought was best. The president made the decision. And there has not been any dissent or backbiting in the wake of that.”

Andrew Bremberg, head of the White House Domestic Policy Council, played a lead role in drafting the executive order and overseeing the policy process.

Exit polls in November showed Trump defeating Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton 80 percent to 16 percent among white evangelical Christians, and he has been eager to please a key part of his base.

“It’s great to be doing it in the Rose Garden,” Trump said at the outset of Thursday’s ceremony. “How beautiful is that?”

Trump received a standing ovation from the audience, which included leaders from an array of faiths, when he said, “It was looking like you never get here, but folks, you got here.”

Pence and more than a half-dozen Cabinet secretaries also attended the event, which kicked off with music by Steven Curtis Chapman, a Grammy Award-winning Christian singer.

In recent years, conservative Christian churches have become increasingly concerned that the federal government could come after their tax-exempt status if they profess opposition to gay rights and same-sex marriage. But even some pastors have endorsed the Johnson Amendment, arguing that it protects what is supposed to be a spiritual haven from the pernicious intrusion of politics.

In February, 89 percent of evangelical leaders said in a National Association of Evangelicals poll that they do not think pastors should endorse politicians from the pulpit.

Until Trump elevated it during his campaign, the Johnson Amendment was rarely a top priority for advocates of religious liberty. In fact, some faith groups have said they strongly support the amendment that Trump is weakening. Requiring churches to stay out of politics, they say, is key to separating church and state.

The Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty, a leading faith-based group focused on religious freedom, has said it supports the Johnson Amendment because keeping politics and religion separate is best for religion.

Rabbi Jack Moline, president of the Interfaith Alliance, criticized the executive order in a statement.

“For decades, the Johnson Amendment has prevented houses of worship from being turned into partisan political tools. A majority of clergy — and Americans — support the status quo and oppose political endorsements from the pulpit.”

Nonreligious groups also support the Johnson Amendment, which applies broadly to charities, not just churches. The Secular Coalition for America called the executive order Thursday “an unprecedented attack on the separation of church and state by a sitting president.”

Another provision included in the order was intended as a response to the issue raised in the prominent Hobby Lobby and Little Sisters of the Poor cases before the Supreme Court: whether employers must comply with the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that insurance cover contraception for women.

In the Hobby Lobby case, the court said some employers can opt out of paying for their employees’ birth control coverage for religious reasons. Afterward, the Obama administration announced new rules to allow for the insurance company to pay for the contraception instead.

Trump’s order calls for “regulatory relief” for those parties but does not spell out what that might entail.

In a statement, Tom Price, Trump’s health and human services secretary, said his department would “be taking action in short order” to follow up on Trump’s direction.

******* Le’Andria Johnson needs our prayer

Let me start out by saying that we all need prayer in some way, shape, or form. Nobody is perfect.

Check out the video below. “Sunday Best” winner Le’Andria Johnson shares a very touching testimony about her life after the contest concluded.

In the video, she asks for people to keep her in their prayers. She also asked for this video to be posted on YouTube. After watching the video I felt compelled to share the video on this blog in the hope that more people will watch it and keep Le’Andria in their prayers.

In my opinion, every Christian is an ambassador of Jesus Christ. I think people who are in public ministry have both a different pressure and different set of responsibilities than the rest of us. They represent Jesus to many non-Christians.

I encourage you to not only pray for Le’Andria, but to pray for every Christian that has a large public ministry. There are many pastors, singers, evangelists and musicians that need us to keep them lifted up in prayer.

~ ~ ~ Le'Andria Johnson's Pastor Asks Church Not to Ostracize Gospel Star for 'Misguided Passion'

Gospel singer Le'Andria Johnson's pastor, Tim Rogers, says her irreverent criticism of the Church was "misguided passion" and he hopes Christians don't "throw her away altogether" because there is a place for her in the Kingdom.

"The Bible says if a brother be overtaken in a fault, if you're really spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness considering yourself," Rogers, a fellow gospel singer who leads The Hope Church in Blytheville, Arkansas, told The Christian Post earlier this week.

"A lot of preachers have called me to say she said things that they can't say. And they are sick of the politics of the church. Me and her did have a talk about her passion being guided because that's what I understand that it was the other day. It was misguided passion," he added.

Johnson won the hearts of Christians nationwide with her talent and candor when she won the BET gospel singing competition "Sunday Best" eight years ago.

Her turn in the spotlight has been punctuated by behavior that some Christians say is unbecoming for someone who professes to be a practicing Christian.

Johnson recently slammed the Church and Bishop Marvin Winans in a scathing expletive-laced critique. She also vented her frustrations with a Christian culture she described as hypocritical. Her outburst caused her to lose a booking for the recently concluded Essence Festival in New Orleans.

"You know what I'm tired of though? ... I'm tired of being Le'Andria Johnson that y'all know of," she said. "And Ima tell you like this: I could be on a Kirk Franklin level. I could be on a Mary level. Yolanda Adams, Marvin Sapp, Fred Hammond. All the gospel greats ... all the R&B. Beyoncé, Brandy. ... If I played the game, I could really be on that level. I could, but I'm not 'bout playin' no games, though."

It was after that outburst that Essence organizers reportedly removed Johnson from a slated tribute to Dottie Peoples. She said she wasn't going to pretend to be someone she wasn't just to become a gospel superstar and called out Church leaders for being hypocritical while dismissing the Church as a business.

Johnson apologized on Monday for her delivery but remained unrepentant about her criticism of the machinery behind Christian culture.

"You know Christianity, it's just a lot that's going on. So the way I said it, using the F-bomb, I apologize to the fans of mine that do go to church. I do apologize if I've offended you," she said.

Rogers explained that while he had not seen the videos of Johnson's rants online, he spoke with her about them and said he encouraged the apology.

"She is a member of our church. So she called me and she told me what happened. She told me what she said. She asked me did I look at it. She told me she was coming home to come to church. We had a chance to sit down. I know Le'Andria. I know her heart. A lot of people in the world they only know her by her gifting. And this is something I'm learning about the Church," he said.

"The Church will accept your gifts but they really don't want that person. That's why when the person is singing you ignore the gifts. And the gift is alright. It makes us feel good until we know who you really are. Le'Andria is a nice person. She means well. She just doesn't have a filter. And she has a lot of learning to do," he said.

"I think she is a wonderful person and I still think she has a place in the kingdom. She just doesn't fit well in a box. And you know religion has a way of boxing you in that you can only be this. You can never be anything other than that. In order to be accepted in this circle you can only be this and you can only talk like this. Well Le'Andria is not that person. But she's learning. I just hope the church doesn't throw her away altogether," Rogers said.

PAIGE PATTERSON USED GOD'S WORD TO PROTECT MEN WHO BEAT & CHEAT ON THEIR WIVES (#MeToo)

PAIGE PATTERSON USED GOD'S WORD TO PROTECT MEN WHO BEAT & CHEAT ON THEIR WIVES (#MeToo):

PATTERSON IS NOW BEING ASKED TO STEP DOWN BUT HOW MANY WOMEN & CHILDREN'S LIVES DID HE RUIN?

CHURCHES ARE NOTORIOUS FOR PROTECTING ABUSIVE HUSBANDS BECAUSE MEN BRING IN MONEY.

GOD DOES NOT ENDORSE THE PRACTICE OF MEN BEATING & CHEATING ON THEIR WIVES OR ABUSING CHILDREN.

SO WHY DOES THE CHURCH?

I BELIEVE IN PRAYER BUT MEN WHO BEAT OR KILL THEIR WIVES SHOULD GO TO JAIL.

THIS INCLUDES MEN WHO ARE CHURCH LEADERS AND MURDERED THEIR WIVES BUT CLAIMED THOSE WOMEN "DIED OF A STROKE".

MEN WHO HABITUALLY CHEAT ON THEIR WIVES SHOULD NOT BE CHURCH LEADERS.

I BELIEVE IN PRAYER BUT MEN WHO SLEEP WITH THEIR DAUGHTERS, GRANDDAUGHTERS OR NIECES SHOULD GO TO JAIL.

LET THE WRATH OF GOD FALL UPON EVERY CHURCH THAT LEFT VULNERABLE WOMEN & CHILDREN IN DANGER JUST TO KEEP MONEY COMING IN.

******* Southern Baptist leader Paige Patterson removed over complaints of 'dangerous' advice to abuse victims

Paige Patterson, a prominent Southern Baptist leader, has been removed from his position as president of a Texas seminary following allegations that he made abusive and demeaning comments to women.

Patterson, 75, has been heavily criticized over his past comments about women. According to The Washington Post, he encouraged abused women to stay with their husbands, implored female seminarians to look more attractive and commented on an “attractive” teenage girl’s appearance.

Patterson, a former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, also allegedly told a rape victim to forgive her assailant and not report the assault to police, a woman told The Washington Post earlier this week.

Patterson was removed from his position as president of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS) in Fort Worth, Texas, by its board of trustees, according to an online statement.

The SWBTS board of trustees said it has appointed Patterson to the position of president emeritus, which includes compensation, after a 14-hour meeting. He and his wife will still be allowed to live on campus at the Baptist Heritage Center as “theologians-in-residence,” the statement added.

The move comes after more than 3,200 Southern Baptist women signed a public letter to the SWBTS, saying they were “grieved by the dangerous and unwise counsel given by Dr. Patterson to women in abusive situations.”

“This pattern of discourse is unbefitting the sober, wise and sound character required of an elder, pastor and leader,” the letter read. “It fails in the call to protect the helpless, the call of Christ to love our neighbor as ourselves and the biblical standard of sexual purity.”

“We cannot defend or support Dr. Patterson’s past remarks. No one should,” the women continued. “The fact that he has not fully repudiated his earlier counsel or apologized for his inappropriate words indicates that he continues to maintain positions that are at odds with Southern Baptists and, more importantly, the Bible’s elevated view of womanhood.”

Others, too, called for Patterson’s removal.

“I don’t have an axe to grind or an agenda to push,” tweeted Clint Pressley, pastor of Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. “Regrettably I don’t think there is any other way to start healing, outside of Paige Patterson’s departure. It’s a dark day for us.”

Earlier this month, Patterson issued an apology to “every woman who has been wounded by anything I have said that was inappropriate or that lacked clarity.” He added that he denounces “any form of abuse,” from physical violence to sexual misconduct to threats.

“Please forgive the failure to be as thoughtful and careful in my extemporaneous expression as I should have been,” Patterson said.

Another online petition, which defends Patterson against the “malicious attacks,” has nearly 600 signatures.

Patterson rose to prominence in the 1970s while leading a conservative takeover of the Baptist Convention. He helped pass resolutions banning women as pastors and taught that women should be submissive to their husbands.

HAPPY RESURRECTION DAY 2018; JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN

HAPPY RESURRECTION DAY

JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN & HE IS LORD.

*** John 11:25-26
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die."

***** Matthew 27:50-53
And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

**** Matthew 28:1-10
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.

Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."

**** Mark 16:1-8
When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?"

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

"Don't be alarmed," he said. "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.'"

Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone because they were afraid.

****** Billy Graham, 'America's Pastor' And Noted Evangelist, Dead At 99

Billy Graham, the famed evangelist who became known as “America’s Pastor,” has died at the age of 99, The Associated Press reported.

Graham died at his home Wednesday morning from natural causes, a family spokesman told ABC News.

Born in 1918 in Charlotte, North Carolina, William Franklin Graham Jr. was the oldest of the four children of William and Morrow Graham. He was raised on a dairy farm, and little in his childhood suggested he would become a world-renowned preacher.

Then at 16, Graham attended a series of revival meetings run by outspoken evangelist Mordecai Ham. The two months he spent listening to Ham’s sermons on sin sparked a spiritual awakening in Graham and prompted him to enroll at Bob Jones College. When the conservative Christian school’s strict doctrine didn’t align with his personal beliefs, he transferred to the Florida Bible Institute (now Trinity College of Florida) and joined a Southern Baptist Convention church. He was ordained in 1939.

Graham received additional training at Illinois’ Wheaton College, where he met his future wife, Ruth McCue Bell. They were married for 64 years, until her death in 2007, and had five children.

After serving briefly as the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Western Springs, Illinois, Graham launched his first radio program, “Songs in the Night,” in 1943. Although he left a year later, Graham liked the idea of sharing his message with a wide audience. As noted on his website, Graham took Jesus Christ literally when he said in Mark 16:15: “Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature.”

Graham was still in his early 30s when entered the public spotlight by giving a series of well-attended “sin-smashing” revival meetings that were held under a circus tent in a Los Angeles parking lot. The press took interest in the charismatic young preacher and began writing articles about him. To get his message to even more people, Graham founded his own ministry, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

Graham viewed the Bible as the infallible word of God. He believed that Jesus led a sinless life and that all men were lost and would face God’s judgment. Most importantly, he was convinced he must use “every modern means of communication available” to spread the Gospel throughout the world, and did so in print, on radio and television, online and in person.

Graham’s sermons promoted evangelism and railed against “godless communism,” drugs, sex and violence. And for the next five decades, his electric personality connected with audiences in more than 185 countries.

Graham was the first evangelist of note to speak behind the Iron Curtain, and during the Apartheid era he refused to visit South Africa until the government allowed integrated seating at his events. He published dozens of best-selling books, including Angels: God’s Secret Agents and The Jesus Generation, and wrote a weekly column that was syndicated in hundreds of newspapers.

Graham received numerous honors, including the Horatio Alger Award, the George Washington Honor Medal, the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award and the Congressional Gold Medal. A highway in Charlotte bears his name, as does part of Interstate 240 near his home in Asheville, North Carolina. In 1989, he became the first clergyman to be granted a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his work as a minister.

Graham also had a major effect on the civil rights movement of the 1950s and ’60s. His early crusades were segregated, but once the U.S. Supreme Court issued its landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling in 1954, which found public school segregation unconstitutional, Graham integrated the seatings at his revival meetings.

Graham befriended the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. as well, and together they preached to more than 2 million people in New York City. When questioned about his views on faith and race, Graham argued there was no scriptural basis for segregation.

As his message spread, Graham was granted personal audiences with royalty, dignitaries and many sitting presidents, from Harry S. Truman to Barack Obama. Three presidents were even on hand in 2007 for the dedication of the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte. Despite being a registered Democrat, Graham opposed the candidacy of John F. Kennedy, and actively encouraged other religious leaders to speak out about the dangers of having a Roman Catholic in the White House.

Though beloved by millions, Graham was not without his detractors. Some fundamentalist Christians took issue with his ecumenical approach to evangelism, and after his 1957 crusade in New York, opponents of Graham’s more liberal theology began calling him “the Antichrist.” According to the biography Billy: A Personal Look at Bill Graham, the World’s Best-Loved Evangelist by Sherwood Eliot Wirt, one Christian educator even said that Graham was “the worst thing to happen to the Christian church in two thousand years.” More recently, detractors blasted Graham’s continued belief that homosexual behavior was a “sinister form of perversion,” and his intolerance against the very presence of gay and lesbian couples within Christianity.

As his health began to fail, Graham decided to announce his retirement in 2005. His final sermon, “The Cross ― Billy Graham’s Message To America,” called for a national spiritual awakening.

After an Australian woman was shot dead by police in Minneapolis, experts are questioning why the officers' body cameras were not turned on during the encounter.

Justine Ruszczyk, who used the last name Damond, reportedly called 911 after hearing a noise near her home on Saturday, according to her stepson-to-be. She was fatally shot by one of the responding officers.

Although Minneapolis police have not named the officers involved, NBC affiliate KARE quoted sources as identifying the officer who shot Damond as Mohammed Noor. Police sources also told KARE that Noor, who was in the squad car's passenger seat, aimed across his partner and out the window to fire at Damond.

But because the body cameras were not activated, the series of events is remained murky.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) of the state Public Safety Department said in a statement that any violation of the camera policy would be investigated by the department's internal affairs bureau.

Last August, the Minneapolis Police Department's "Body Worn Camera" policy was rolled out just a month after former St. Anthony police Officer Jeronimo Yanez fatally shot Philando Castile — the aftermath of which was broadcast on Facebook live. It was unclear whether the implementation of cameras had any correlation to Castile's death.

But according to experts, there's no reason the officers' body cameras should not have been switched on when they approached Damond's home.

"The policy requires [Minneapolis police officers] to turn the camera on prior to use of force, and it goes on to say if it's not turned on prior to force, it should be activated as soon as it is safe to do so," said Teresa Nelson, interim executive director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota.

"So we have two officers who, after using deadly force — taking someone's life — didn't activate their cameras," Nelson told NBC News. "That's astounding to me."

The department's policy states that a body camera should be turned on for situations as minimal as traffic stops and for incidents as serious as use of force as long as it is safe to do so. The policy also states that if cameras are not turned on before an incident use of force, they should be turned on afterward.

"I think a point that gets lost is that these body cameras also have the benefit of protecting officers who rightly use force, because it has this ability to record a situation and visually show that force is justified," Ronald Sullivan Jr., a professor at Harvard Law School and director of the Harvard Criminal Justice Institute, told NBC News.

Minneapolis police and the state Public Safety Department did not immediately respond to inquiries as to whether the officers' cameras were turned on after Damond was shot. Noor's attorney also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Officers who fail to abide by the department's internal policy are subject to discipline, "up to and including termination," the document says. If officers fail to activate their cameras, they are supposed to report that failure and explain why the cameras were not activated.

But Sullivan and Nelson said they have concerns about the internal reprimand policy.

"For officers who are clearly in violation of department protocol for turning on the camera — from my experience — it appears they are rarely disciplined," Sullivan said.

Specific penalties are not listed, and because a violation is handled internally, the ACLU is pushing the Minnesota Legislature and Minneapolis police to detail exactly what kind of punishment would be levied.

"The whole reason for body cameras is for accountability and transparency. If you're not treating it as critical, you undermine the credibility and benefit to body cameras," Nelson said.

Nelson takes issue with how the policy details when activation is required.

"There's sort of a catch-all that says 'when it's safe to do so.' So officers have tremendous discretion," she said.

Nelson said a variety of factors should have caused the officers to turn on their cameras as they approached Damond's home.

"My sense is they were at least had some contact with an individual prior to killing her," Nelson said. "I believe there would have been a point where something in the policy triggered them turning them on."

Then there is the dash camera in the officers' squad car.

"The Minneapolis Police Department has not said there is no [dashcam] video, just that the video didn't capture the incident," she said. "My question is: Is there audio, and why haven't you released?"

(A recording that purported to be audio of the Minneapolis incident surfaced on the internet Monday evening but NBC News has been unable to verify its authenticity.)

In a statement posted to the police department's Twitter page, Chief Janeé Harteau said she "acknowledged the pain and frustration that family and community members" felt after the shooting.

As the investigation proceeds, Sullivan said the best thing people could do would be to ask that police implement strict penalties for those who do not follow the policy.

Otherwise, he said, "officers will rightly think they can turn on cameras [only] when convenient and do so with impunity."

TRUMP'S INAUGURATION CEREMONY: FLOYD MAYWEATHER & PRAYER LEADERS

TRUMP'S INAUGURATION CEREMONY COUNTDOWN:

BOXING LEGEND FLOYD MAYWEATHER TO ATTEND.

HIS CHOICE OF PRAYER LEADERS DISPLAYS TRUMP'S VALUES AND FAITH.

Sources: NPR, Fox News, TMZ Sports, YouTube

***** With His Choice Of Inauguration Prayer Leaders, Trump Shows His Values

The six faith leaders President-elect Donald Trump has invited to pray at his inauguration come from diverse backgrounds, but they have something in common: All have personal ties to Trump or his family or have in some way signaled their approval of him, his politics or his wealth.

The group includes an African-American megachurch leader from Detroit, a Florida woman known for her lavish lifestyle and preaching on "abundancy," a rabbi from Los Angeles, and a Hispanic evangelical — as well as Franklin Graham (son of Billy Graham) and Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York.

Bishop Wayne T. Jackson, who leads Great Faith Ministries in Detroit, played a key role during the presidential campaign by inviting candidate Trump to visit his church. For Trump, it was a rare appearance before a black congregation.

Presenting Trump with a Jewish prayer shawl during his visit, Jackson said, "There are going to be times in your life that you are going to feel forsaken ... but the anointing is going to lift you up."

With his invitation to Jackson to pray at his inauguration, Trump returned a favor.

Jackson lives in a multimillion dollar mansion in Detroit and drives luxury cars. He preaches that being rich is not bad and that Trump's wealth shows he is "blessed by God."

Such teachings exemplify the "prosperity gospel," which holds that God rewards faithful Christians with financial success. It is a faith tradition with which Trump long has been associated. His "spiritual adviser" is Paula White, who as the leader of New Destiny Christian Center near Orlando, Fla., is perhaps the best known prosperity preacher in the country.

"Every day you're [living] your destiny, designed by God and discovered by you," White said in a recent sermon. "You're either in a position of abundance, you're in a position of prosperity, or you're in a position of poverty. Now that's in every area of your life. ... You're living abundant in your affairs of life — and that includes your financial conditions — or you're living in poverty."

Not surprisingly, Donald Trump is drawn to those preachers who say that one's wealth is a sign of God's approval. Paula White has her critics in the evangelical world, some of whom consider her a heretic, but she endorsed Trump's candidacy, and he reciprocated by inviting White to pray at his swearing-in ceremony.

Another pro-Trump evangelist who will be praying at the inauguration is Franklin Graham. During a recent interview with Lou Dobbs on the Fox Business Network, Graham said "the hand of God" was evident in Trump's election.

"I think God intervened and put his hand on Donald Trump for some reason," Graham told Dobbs. "It's obvious that there was something behind this, and it was more than people understand. I just think it was God."

By appearing at Trump's swearing-in, Franklin Graham will be following family tradition: His 98-year-old father, Billy, prayed at the inauguration of several presidents, from Richard Nixon to Bill Clinton, and Franklin prayed at the inauguration of George W. Bush in 2001.

His inclusion as a prayer leader may also signal Trump's comfort with Graham's political positions. During his campaign, Trump focused a lot of attention on the threat from "radical Islam," a theme Franklin Graham also has emphasized.

Shared political views may also explain Trump's invitation to Rabbi Marvin Hier, the founding president of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. In a recent television interview, Hier said it was "outrageous" that the Obama administration chose not to veto a recent United Nations resolution condemning Israel's settlement policy, echoing Trump's own criticism.

Hier, the first rabbi asked to pray at a presidential inauguration since 1985, says he will hit "modern themes" during his inauguration appearance. "It will be a short prayer, but it will reflect on the 21st century," he says.

Hier also has ties to the Trump world through Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and close adviser. Kushner's parents are old friends with Hier and his wife.

One indication of Trump's unorthodox approach in choosing inauguration prayer leaders is the absence of any representative of mainline Protestantism, the dominant faith tradition of U.S. presidents throughout the country's history. On the other hand, Trump is the first to invite a Hispanic evangelical leader, Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC) and senior pastor at New Season Christian Worship Center, an Assemblies of God congregation in Sacramento, Calif.

Rodriguez accepted the invitation despite some misgivings about Trump's hard-line immigration views.

"There was a bit of angst due to the fact that throughout the course of this campaign, the rhetoric and tone, as it pertained particularly to the immigrant community, did not line up with the ethos or the values of the NHCLC," Rodriguez told NPR. He agreed to come to Washington for the inauguration after "prayerful deliberation and discussion" and a conclusion that he could not pass up an opportunity to pray on "the quintessential political platform on the planet."

Among Hispanic evangelicals, Rodriguez is one of the more conservative leaders. While he did not endorse Trump, he told NPR that he has heard a "change of tone" from Trump in the past few weeks, and now has high hopes for better relations between Hispanics and the Trump administration.

"Thirty percent of Latinos voted for Donald Trump," Rodriguez points out. "There's a great possibility that the president-elect and his team have come to the realization that this constituency could be engaged successfully."

Generally, Trump's selection of inauguration prayer leaders reflects his tendency to break with mainstream thinking — and the importance he places on loyalty. With his invitations, he has rewarded clergy members who support him politically, endorse his views, or even offer a religious approval of his great wealth.

The least surprising prayer leader choice is Cardinal Dolan. Most U.S. presidents in recent years have asked a prominent Catholic bishop or theologian to pray at their inaugurations, and as fellow New Yorkers, Dolan and Trump have known each other for a long time.

WHEN MOMMA PRAYS

WHEN MOMMA PRAYS (POEM)

Poem Author: Laurel @Black Political Buzz

**** WHEN MOMMA PRAYS:

I need help.

Bad things keep trying to hold me down.

The devil wants to destroy me.

He wants me to give up, wants me to surrender my life to Failure and Defeat.

But I won't listen to him.

I know what to do.

You see as a child whenever anyone needed help in their lives, I often observed my Grandmother, my Mother and the Church Sisters pray for tormented people until something happened, until a breakthrough occurred.

My Grandmother, Mother and the Church Sisters would spend hours on their knees calling out to Almighty God to send down his Mercy, send down his Grace, send down Divine Intervention.

Eventually a Miracle occurred or Deliverance came to that victim's aid.

Now I am an Adult facing what appears to be an Insurmountable Challenge.

The devil thinks he has won.

Thinks this time he will put an end to God's preordained Destiny for my life.

Ha ha ha! I laugh!

Mr devil won't succeed in these efforts.

Although my Grandmother has since gone on to Glory, my Mother and the Church Sisters remain on earth as Faithful Prayer Warriors to intercede for human beings desperately in need of a touch from Heaven to fix what is broken.

When Momma Prays she prays with bold Authority and Confidence in God's word.

When Momma prays all of Heaven stands at attention, ready to deploy and stop demonic forces in their tracks in Jesus name!

When Momma prays Male Angels standing more than seven feet tall, pull out their flaming swords ready to strike when given the command.

Now I need help again.

I'm facing what appears to be an Insurmountable Challenge.

However I know what to do.

I will call Momma and tell her to gather the other Prayer Warriors.

Except this time..........

I don't just want Momma and the Church Sisters to Pray until something happens.

This time I want Momma to also teach me how to pray until something happens.

Lord thank you for giving me a Momma who knows how to PRAY.

When Momma prays.

CHRISTIANS WHO MURDER OTHER CHRISTIANS WITH THEIR TONGUE (GOSSIP & SLANDER)

CHRISTIANS WHO MURDER OTHER CHRISTIANS WITH THEIR TONGUE

YOU SHALL KNOW THEM BY THEIR FRUIT.

Sources: Gospelway, Open Bible Info, YouTube

Why is it that CHRISTIANS (followers of CHRIST) appear to be the only population on planet Earth who make it a habit to destroy other CHRISTIANS with their tongues on a regular basis?

Is this CHRIST-like behaviour?

What does the Bible teach about controlling our tongues so that we do not speak evil against others? What are slander, gossip, rumors, talebearing, and  backbiting? How important are truth, motives, and proper attitudes in our speech? Does Bible teaching about meddling and slander mean we must not rebuke people or tell them they need to repent of sin or error? How pure is your speech?

Introduction:

Speech is one of the most difficult aspects of life to control.

James 3:2 - If we can control our speech, we can control all areas of our lives.
Titus 3:1,2 - Christians are told to "speak evil of no one."
1 Peter 2:1 - "Lay aside ... all evil speaking."
Most people are aware that the Bible gives guidelines about speech, and specifically about how we should speak about others. The Bible deals with "slander," "backbiting," etc.

Most are also aware that this is common problem.

People love to talk about other people, especially if they can say something bad: at work, over the backyard fence, and especially over the telephone, etc. Many newspaper columns, magazines, and TV and radio talk shows are devoted to the latest gossip about movie stars, politicians, and other public figures. People delight in digging up dirt.
If we were honest, most of us would admit we ourselves at times have a problem with speech. How many can honestly say they have never said something about someone else and then later realized they should not have said it? If we understood the Bible better, we might regret even more of our speech.
The purpose of this study is to consider the Bible teaching about slander and speaking evil about others.

I. What Constitutes Sinful Slander?

Exactly what constitutes improper speech about others? Understanding this is the most difficult part of the subject for many.

A. Some Definitions

The following definitions are from The American Heritage Dictionary.
"Gossip" - "Rumor or talk of a personal, sensational, or intimate nature." This word is nowhere used in the KJV (it is used in the NKJV in 1 Timothy 5:13).
"Rumor" - "Unverified information of uncertain origin usually spread by word of mouth; hearsay."
"Slander" - "The utterance of defamatory statements injurious to the reputation or well-being of a person. ... A malicious statement or report."
"Backbite" - "To speak spitefully or slanderously about (a person)."
"Talebearer" - "A person who spreads malicious stories or gossip."
"Rail" - "To condemn or attack in bitter, harsh, or abusive language..."
"Revile" - "To denounce with abusive language."
Some people believe that all talking about people who are not present is "gossip," and therefore wrong. Others think saying bad things about people not present is "gossip." Or some think talking about things you don't know to be true about others is "gossip" and wrong.
While there are many ways to be guilty of speaking improperly about other people, not everything that some would call "gossip" is wrong. We must let the Bible define what is wrong.

B. Some Things that Are Not Necessarily Sinful

Simply talking about someone who is not present is not necessarily sinful.

Many inspired men did this. Who will claim they were wrong?
Matthew 28:7,8 - An angel told the women to tell the apostles about Jesus' resurrection. They were to speak to the apostles about someone who was not present.
Matthew 11:7-19 - Jesus told people how great John the Baptist was. [17:10ff]
Acts 11:1-18 - Peter told Christians in Jerusalem about the conversion of Cornelius.
In all these cases, someone spoke about people who were not present, but did they sin?
We often do similar things and we know it is not wrong.
* We may tell good news about someone: they had a baby, got a job promotion, bought a new car.
* We may tell an interesting or humorous story about people not present, but the person involved may not object at all if he knew we told it.
* We sometimes make announcements in our assemblies and even pray to God about people who are not present: someone who is out of town, sick, etc. These are people who are not present. Is it wrong to make announcements about them and pray about them?
Such speech is not wrong, because the person about whom we are speaking is not in any way harmed or injured.
[Cf. Acts 9:39; Galatians 1:18-2:10; Luke 1:13-17; cf. 1 Timothy 3; Titus 1:5-9.]

Even telling unfavorable or uncomplimentary things about people not present is not necessarily sinful.

Again, inspired men often did this. Were they wrong?
Matthew 15:12-14 - After Jesus had finished rebuking the Pharisees, His disciples told Him that He had offended them. Though the Pharisees obviously were no longer present, Jesus proceeded to warn His disciples about the errors of the Pharisees. [16:5-12]
Matthew 20:17-19 - Jesus took His disciples aside and told them that the chief priests and scribes would kill Him (obviously these men were not present).
Galatians 2:11-14 - Paul told Christians in Galatia about a sin Peter had committed in Antioch.
In fact, Bible writers often record events in which various people committed sins, even naming names and groups involved. We read about these sins even today, even though the people who committed the sins are obviously not present. Did these inspired men sin? Obviously not.
[1 Timothy 1:19,20; 2 Timothy 1:15; 2:16-18; 3:8; 4:10,14; Acts 4:27; Matthew 6:7; etc.]
There are situations in which the Bible commands us to tell people about bad things other people have done.
Matthew 18:17 - If a Christian sins and will not repent, we are commanded to tell the church. So under certain circumstances we must tell other people about a person's sin.
Just as Jesus and His apostles and prophets often spoke about the sins of people, so we are required to oppose error and false teaching. In doing so, we may mention sins or false teaching people have committed, in order to warn other people to avoid those errors. This may not be wrong, and in some cases may be required.
Sometimes when people hear that this has happened, they claim wrong was done. They say we "gossiped" about those people. It is possible, of course, to speak wrongfully in such cases; but the Bible examples show it is not necessarily sinful, and in many cases God requires us to do it.
So just because we have spoken about someone who is not present - even saying bad things about them - does not necessarily mean we have sinned. So what is sinful slander?

C. Some Characteristics of Sinful Slander

It is possible to slander someone when they are not present or even when they are present! Slander involves saying unfavorable things about a person in the following ways:

1. Some people accuse others of doing wrong when they do not know it to be true.

It is not necessarily wrong to sincerely ask someone about what they did, but it is slander to accuse someone without substantial evidence they are guilty.
Exodus 20:16 - You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
2 Timothy 3:3 - Paul lists a number of sins that characterize perilous times. The list of sins includes "slanderers" (NKJV), translated "false accusers" in the KJV.
Titus 2:3 - Aged women should be taught not to be "slanderers," again translated "false accusers" in the KJV.
The Greek definitions of the words "slander," "backbiting," "evil speaking," etc., show these include spreading false reports.
[Cf. Psalm 31:18; 15:3; 109:2,3; Romans 1:30; 2 Corinthians 12:20; Examples: Matthew 12:22-25; 11:18,19; 5:11; Acts 25:1,2; 24:2-9,13; 2 Samuel 10:1-3; Luke 23:2-5.]
What if we circulate a false report that someone else started? Can we blame them and remain free from guilt if it is false?
People often circulate rumors saying, "I don't know this is true, but I heard..."
Exodus 23:1 - You shall not circulate a false report. Do not put your hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. No matter who originates the accusation, we should not repeat and spread it unless we have substantial evidence it is true.
The fact that someone simply made an accusation is not enough. Anybody can make accusations. Lots of innocent people, in the Bible and since, have been falsely accused. We need to know what the evidence is.
What if I suspect a thing, but cannot really prove it?
1 Timothy 5:19 - Do not receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses. We must have evidence before we make accusations. If we do not have proof, maybe we need to ask questions and seek witnesses. But don't affirm guilt till the proof is in.
1 Timothy 6:4 - Sins listed include "reviling" (speaking evil) and "evil suspicions" (NKJV; "evil surmising" - KJV). This is jumping to conclusions without adequate proof about what a person did or why he did it. Often in a time of conflict, people circulate all kinds of rumors and motives for which they have no evidence. "I think he did it because..."
Proverbs 24:28 - Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause. It is not always wrong to speak against someone, but there must be adequate cause first.
Matthew 18:16 -By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. The testimony of personal witnesses constitutes evidence to be evaluated.
Obviously, there are limits on our knowledge or what others have done. When it comes to Scripture, we have an infallible revelation. But when it comes to knowing what other people have said or done, sometimes even reliable sources may be sincerely mistaken. But a sincere mistake is significantly different from negligence, indifference, jumping to conclusions, or circulating unsubstantiated rumors. Before we definitely accuse others, we must put forth a reasonable effort to get the facts, not just suspicions.
If we don't have the facts, investigate first. Ask questions, gather testimony. But don't make charges till we have reasonable evidence.

2. Some make derogatory statements from malicious motives.

We must sincerely seek to be sure our accusations are true. But even when we have the truth, that does not mean we are right in spreading the information. Some people think they can say anything about anyone as long as they feel sure it is true. But there is also the question of motive: there must be good reasons for telling bad things about others. Sometimes people spread stories because they want to hurt people's reputation.
1 Peter 2:1 - Evil speaking is associated with malice.
Psalm 41:5-7 - David's enemies spoke against him seeking to hurt him.
Malice or improper motives can take various forms, such as:
[Cf. Ephesians 4:31; Romans 1:29,30; Colossians 3:8; 2 Cor. 12:20; Psalm 31:13; 15:3.]
* Jealousy
1 Peter 2:1 associates evil speaking with envy. We may do wrong by speaking evil of others because we envy their abilities or blessings or the honor or favor they have received. We may seek to exalt ourselves above them by making them look bad.
* Vengeance, anger, hatred, or grudges.
Jeremiah 20:10 - Jeremiah's enemies denounced and defamed him to take revenge.
1 Peter 3:9; 2:23 - We should not return evil for evil or reviling for reviling. Jesus set the example in this. When He was reviled, He did not in turn revile others.
Vengeance is not just physical actions we take against others. One of the most common ways to take vengeance is by saying things to hurt others. Others harm us (or we imagine so), so we say defamatory things to "get even." Someone accuses us of something, so we respond, "Well, what about the time when you..."
Sin must be rebuked. But when we do so, we must be sure that we are motivated by concern for the sinner and others who may be involved, not by a desire for vengeance.
[1 Corinthians 4:12,13; Ephesians 4:31]
* Self will
When others oppose our views, whether in personal matters or doctrinal issues, we may seek to get some "dirt" on them to discredit them and keep others from listening to them.
1 Timothy 6:4 - False teachers are often involved in "reviling." They hope to find fault in those who speak truth.
Jeremiah 6:28 - Rebels (against God) go about as slanderers.
3 John 9,10 - Diotrophes loved pre-eminence. One of his methods was to speak evil against the apostle John (note: "malicious words").
We see this technique again and again in politics. It is sometimes called the "scorched earth policy." When politicians oppose one another in an election or in some policy decision, often someone leaks some personal information about his opponents or their party to make them look bad. Often it happens shortly before an election.
Speaking evil against others so we can win a confrontation and get our way is a form of sinful slander. Yet it frequently happens in time of conflict.
* Persecution
Matthew 5:11 - We are blessed when people persecute us and say evil against us falsely.
Before we spread derogatory statements about someone, we need to make sure our motives are pure. Are we speaking for our own personal benefit, or are we sincerely speaking for the good of the one we criticize or for the good of others who really have a genuine need for the information? This requires serious self-examination, because it is easy to attribute bad motives to others and good motives to ourselves.
[Psalm 31:18; 1 Peter 2:12; 3:16; 4:4]

3. Some simply enjoy meddling in the personal affairs of others, spreading dirt about others.

Some people just get a thrill from spreading derogatory stories about others. They feel important because they know some intimate personal affairs that other people do not know about someone, and especially if they know some "dirt" about somebody.
Some tabloid magazines, newspapers columns, and TV shows sell their product and make a living this way. They delight in digging up dirt, and become rich by spreading the dirt to people who delight in reading it.
1 Timothy 5:13 - Young widows should not be idle, tattlers, busybodies.
2 Thessalonians 3:11 - Some refuse to work but become busybodies.
Leviticus 19:16 - You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people.
Some people are idle, having nothing constructive to do. So they spread rumors about others. When others do wrong, instead of sorrowing and trying to help them, they enjoy talking about it to others.
Again, there are times when some information needs to be made known in order to help the one who did wrong or to help other people who have a real reason to know the information. But we must be sure we speak for the good of others, not just because we enjoy being busybodies.

4. Some broadcast private sins instead of personally confronting the sinner.

Matthew 18:15-17; Luke 17:3 - If our brother sins against us, we are to go tell him his fault between the two of us. If he repents (hears us) we have gained our brother. The matter is resolved. Note that "hearing" us in Matthew 18 is defined in Luke 17 to mean "repenting." Until the person repents and starts doing right, he has not "heard" us.
The sin is made known to others only if the brother refuses to correct his error when he has been personally confronted. To spread a personal matter before confronting the sinner may cause unnecessary harm to a brother's reputation, and it drags other people into a controversy unnecessarily. When the brother has been confronted and has refused to correct the wrong, however, then we must get others involved.
Sometimes such matters are handled improperly because of ignorance of God's plan. But often people report private sins to other people, before the sinner has been adequately confronted, because of improper motivations. The issue to be remembered is: Are we acting according to the Bible for the sincere purpose of helping others, or are we acting to hurt others?

II. What Are the Effects of Slander?

What problems are caused by sinful slander? Why should we avoid it?

A. Slander Alienates Friends and Promotes Strife and Contention.

Proverbs 16:28 - A perverse man sows strife, and a whisperer separates the best of friends. How many times have people become alienated because of slander other people spread about them?
Proverbs 26:20 - Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; and where there is no talebearer, strife ceases.
Slander is often associated with strife, contention, and division like fuel to a fire. In such times, people may say harsh things about one another. They may drag out all the dirt they can to discredit one another. They may bring up old wrongs that were corrected wrong ago, or old matters that had been overlooked till a "blow-up" occurs.
People say, "Do you know what so-and-so said about you?" Others respond, "Well, remember years ago when he did such-and-such?" Then others become upset and they respond by saying nasty things or by dragging up things the other party said. Soon a major conflict has resulted, all started by someone spreading slander.
Have you and I been guilty, or do we control our attitudes and our speech?
[2 Corinthians 12:20; 1 Timothy 6:4; Ephesians 4:31; Colossians 3:8]

B. Slander Can Destroy a Man.

Proverbs 11:9 - The hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor. Men have lost jobs, wealth, and families because of character assassination.
Proverbs 18:21 - Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit. People have been killed because of slanderous lies told against them.
Common accusations that are used currently to discredit people are "sexual harassment," "racism," and "child abuse." When they really occur, such things are tragic. But when such accusations are made, society and government often have such a knee-jerk emotional reaction that they forget the concept that a person is innocent until proved guilty. Anyone who wants to hurt others, especially public figures, can destroy their reputations, their jobs, even their homes simply by making accusations, despite the fact they cannot prove them. Many have had their children taken away because some disgruntled acquaintance made an anonymous tip to a child welfare agency with no proof.
2 Samuel 10:1-3 - David sent his servants to comfort the king of Ammon when his father died. However, the king's advisers slandered David saying the servants were spies. War resulted because of totally untrue slander.
How many congregations have been torn apart by unfounded slander in which people made untrue accusations, spread malicious rumors, or refused to confront people personally?
Any fool (in the sense of Proverbs) can make an accusation. What we must consider is the proof. If it is lacking, then we must not spread the accusation, and must not treat the accused person as guilty until the facts are known. If people continue to accuse someone when they lack proof, then the accusers are the ones who are wrong.

C. Slander Demonstrates We Have the Character of Satan.

1 Timothy 3:11 - The wives of elders and deacons must not be slanderers. The word for "slanderer" here is the same word as the word "devil." "Devil" means slanderer or false accuser.
For example, the devil accused Job before God saying Job would turn against God if he suffered enough (Job 1,2). This demonstrates the nature of Satan and illustrates the character of a slanderer or false accuser.
When we are guilty of slander, we are acting like devils: we demonstrate that our character is like that of Satan.

D. Slander Causes the One Who Is Guilty to Lose His Eternal Reward.

Psalms 101:5 - Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, Him I will destroy.
Romans 1:30,32 - Backbiters are worthy of death and so are people who approve of others who practice it.
1 Corinthians 5:11 - Revilers in a local church should be withdrawn from (if they don't repent).
Surely there are many reasons to avoid slander. What about us? Have we been guilty of slander or have we kept our speech pure? If we have slandered others, have we repented and asked for forgiveness from those whom we have harmed?
[Psalm 15:1-3; 1 Corinthians 6:10]

III. How Can We Avoid Slander?

Here are some guidelines to help us avoid being guilty.

A. Don't Get Involved When Others Spread Slander.

Not only are there people who just enjoy spreading dirt about others, there are also people who enjoy listening to the dirt.

Do not encourage or cooperate with a slanderer.

Romans 1:29,30,32 - Those who consent with (take pleasure in) people who backbite and whisper, are themselves guilty of sin. Talebearers must have someone to tell their slander to. By giving them a listening ear, we encourage their evil.
Instead of listening, we should challenge their evidence and their motivesfor their accusations. Ask them, "How do you know this is true? And why are you telling me this?" What proof do they have, and what good are they doing by spreading such information to you? If they cannot properly defend their speech, we should rebuke them (Ephesians 5:11).

Limit your association with people known to be persistent slanderers.

Proverbs 20:19 - He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with one who flatters with his lips (or one who "opens wide his lips" - ASV). Some talebearers are also flatterers. They say sweet things to people's face, but slander them behind the back. Remember, if you see them treat other people this way, they will also treat you this way. So, don't associate with them.
1 Corinthians 5:11 - If a member of the church persists in reviling others, he should be withdrawn from.
1 Corinthians 15:33 - Whether or not the slanderer is a member of the church, remember that evil company corrupt good habits. If people continue such conduct and will not quit, we should limit our association with them. By avoiding them we are not influenced to act like they do. Also, we can't repeat all the gossip to others, because we don't know what it is.
[Exodus 23:1]

B. Carefully Examine Our Motives.

To correct our speech, we must first correct our hearts.

Matthew 12:33-37 - What the mouth speaks depends on the condition of the heart. So to correct our speech, we must correct our hearts. We have learned that slander is often caused by sinful motives, so before we speak we must carefully examine our hearts to be sure we speak from proper motives.

Speak from love for the good of others.

What should be the correct motive for speaking about others?
Matthew 22:39 - Love your neighbor as yourself. If we cease being primarily concerned for pleasing ourselves, we can learn to be concerned about what is best for all concerned. It may help us improve our attitude if we put ourselves in the other person's place: if I had this problem, what would be the proper, Biblical, loving way for others to deal with it?
Ephesians 4:29 - Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. The goal is to edify others and impart grace - that is to build others up and help them be right according to God's word.
There are definitely times when the sins and problems of others should be discussed. Sinners must be rebuked, and other people who may be involved must be warned to avoid being harmfully influenced by sin. But all should be done like Jesus and His apostles did it. We must speak from a sincere concern for the welfare of others, not out of jealousy, pride, vengeance, etc. How carefully do you and I guard our motives when we speak about others?

C. Desire Sinners to Correct Their Sins and Be Forgiven.

Rather than maliciously spreading slander about people we hear about who have sinned, we should hope for their repentance and forgiveness.

Matthew 18:15; Luke 17:3

If a brother sins against you personally, you must go to him personally. Remember we must not accuse people till we have proof they sinned. Often a personal discussion reveals that the person did not commit the sin we thought they did. Or he may have a good attitude so that discussion will lead him to correct the problem.
If a brother has been confronted and will not repent, it should be taken to the church. But many problems could be "nipped in the bud" by personal confrontation. Spreading the matter to other people, rather than speaking to the one who did the wrong, just enlarges the problem. In any case, we should hope that the one who is accused of sin should be right before God.
What if someone comes to me and tells me about some sin that he personally knows some other member has committed? If he believes the other brother sinned against him, then I should show him what the Bible says and teach him that he must now go speak to the brother who sinned against him. Even if the sin is not a personal matter between them, but he knows about the sin and I don't know, then he should see to it that the sinner is confronted by people who do know about the sin. There is nothing to be gained by spreading the matter to people who know nothing about it before the sinner has been confronted.

Galatians 6:1

If a brother is overcome in a fault, seek to restore him. This should be our desire, even if the sin was not a personal offense against us. We should sincerely want what is best for the sinner. But the best thing for every sinner is to repent and be forgiven, so he can be saved. This requires that the sinner be shown what the problem is, with sincere concern for his soul. The goal is not to take pleasure in spreading the news about the sin to other people, but to help the sinner to change.
Obviously, our responsibility in rebuking others may be limited by opportunity and circumstances. Our greatest responsibility is to people we know, especially in the local church. If the sin was committed by someone we don't know and never meet, we have little opportunity to help them.
For example, suppose we hear of some sin or false doctrine in the life of a prominent religious leader, political leader, entertainer, sports figure, etc. If they were a family member, neighbor, friend, or especially a member of the local church, surely we should make sure they are taught the truth. But if we have no relationship or contact with them, we are not responsible to personally confront every sinner in the world. Even so, we may properly use them as an example in teaching to warn others to avoid such errors.
But in any case, we should hope for their restoration and not take pleasure in their downfall. And if we personally know the people involved, and especially if the sin is committed against us personally, we should be sure the sinner is confronted in love.

D. Pray for People Who Have Problems.

Instead of rejoicing when we hear of people who have problems, and instead of maliciously spreading evil reports about them, we should pray for their welfare.
Luke 6:27,28 - Even those who persecute us and misuse us should be treated with love. We should pray for them and seek God's blessing (something good) on them. Pray they will receive what is truly good for them.
Luke 23:34 - Jesus prayed for the forgiveness of the very people who killed Him. He was our example in suffering (1 Peter 2:23). He did not revile or say that He wanted things to happen contrary to their well being (but they did have to repent for their sin - see Acts 2). So we should pray for those who wrong us to receive what is truly good for them, and it is always good for sinners to be taught to repent and be forgiven.
It is not easy to sincerely pray for people and then turn around and maliciously slander them. When we hear reports of people who have sinned or have other problems, an attitude of love and prayer will help us avoid many of the sinful attitudes that lead to slander.

Conclusion

Christians need to work diligently to maintain proper attitudes and proper speech.
James 3:1-8 - The tongue is "full of deadly poison." Like a small flame it can kindle a great fire. Thousands of acres of forest can be destroyed by a small spark. So our speech can destroy the well-being of many.
Colossians 4:6 - Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. Proper answers are answers that help people do right and be saved. This may include telling people they have sinned and need to repent. It may include warning other people so they avoid the sins of others. But it must always be spoken with a sincere concern for the welfare of all involved.
Psalms 141:3 - We need to pray with David, "Set a guard, O lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips."
What about your speech and mine? Would our Lord be pleased with our speech?
What is your relationship with the Son of God who died to save you from sin?
