*** Who is Stephen Paddock, Las Vegas shooter?

Police have identified the man accused of killing at least 58 people and wounding 515 in a Las Vegas shooting rampage as Stephen Paddock, a resident of Mesquite, Nev.
Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said officers determined the gunshots were coming from a room on the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay complex on the Las Vegas Strip in what authorities say is the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

As police entered the room, Paddock, 64, killed himself, Lombardo said. At least 10 rifles were found in the room; it appeared he had hammered out the windows of the room before shooting.

"Right now, we believe it's a sole actor, a lone-wolf-type actor," Lombardo said.

Lombardo said that investigators were still trying to determine the gunman's motive. "I can’t get into the mind of a psychopath at this point."

Investigators believe Paddock used the vantage point to fire on the 22,000 person crowd that gathered for an outdoor country music concert. He opened fire as the artist Jason Aldean performed.

Law enforcement officials have not uncovered any information to suggest other public venues are threatened, the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.

Still, DHS security may be heightened in and around public places and events, DHS said.

The Islamic State claimed after the attack that Paddock was one of the terror group's "soldiers." But Aaron Rouse, chief of the FBI’s Las Vegas office, told reporters that investigators have found no links to international terror groups.

Eric Paddock, the brother of the suspected gunman, told reporters outside his home in Orlando that he was "dumbfounded" by the attack.

He said he last heard from his from his brother via text message to inquire about how their mother was doing after Eric Paddock's Florida neighborhood lost electricity for several days.

Eric Paddock added that his brother had "no machine guns" when he helped move him from Florida to Nevada a few years ago.

"There is no reason we can imagine why Stephen would do something like this," Paddock said.“We have no idea how this happened. It’s like an asteroid just fell on top of our family.”

Paddock told the USA TODAY Network in an interview that their late father, Benjamin Paddock, was a convicted bank robber and they were raised without him for most of their childhood. Benjamin, who was known as "Chromedome" and "Old Baldy" robbed a Phoenix bank in 1960, the Tuscon Daily Citizen reported in 1971.

He later escaped from a Texas prison and for a time was on the FBI's Most Wanted List. He was captured in 1978 in Oregon, where he was running a big parlor.

Paddock said, to his knowledge, his brother didn't have a history of mental illness or substance abuse. He said his brother owned guns and played high-stakes video poker.

In recent years, Paddock said they had gone skeet shooting and gambling together, but he had not detected anything was amiss.

But Paddock also described his relationship with his brother as being somewhat distant.

He said Stephen barely knew his children and he talked to him every once in a while.

He said he did not know Stephen's girlfriend, Marilou Danley, well.
"There's absolutely no way I can even conceive that my brother would shoot a bunch of people he didn't even know," Eric Paddock said. "There's no rationale. There's nothing anywhere that said why he did this."

Police blocked off the road to the suspect’s home in Mesquite, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas. Records show that Paddock resided at 1372 Babbling Brook Court in a home he purchased in 2015.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department obtained a search warrant and officers searched Paddock's home, said Quinn Averrett, public information officer for the Mesquite Police Department.

The Mesquite department had secured the home and the perimeter around it but is playing only a supportive role in the investigation.

Law-enforcement agents completed an initial sweep of Paddock's home Monday morning in which investigators found additional weapons and ammunition, Averrett told reporters at a news conference Monday.

He later said he could confirm only that ammunition was found in the residence.

Investigators continued to search the residence, and Lombardo said that investigators were preparing to search a second residence in Nevada belonging to the gunman.

The house in Mesquite is in a retirement community, Sun City Mesquite, an upscale development of about 1400 homes.

The community includes an 18-hole golf course, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a recreation center. Residents must be at least 55 years old, and no children are allowed.

Paddock was not known to the federal authorities. Paddock had no known connection to terrorism.

The gunman worked for the predecessor company of aerospace and defense giant Lockheed Martin from 1985 to 1988, the company said in a statement.

The company did not release further details about his employment there.

Lombardo said law enforcement authorities had located a “person of interest” who he named as Marilou Danley, believed to be the suspect's roommate.

She was later cleared of involvement, authorities said.

A federal law enforcement official who is not authorized to comment publicly said that Danley was located outside the country.

Authorities were gathering information from her about Paddock.

Lombardo said officers had located a Hyundai Tucson and a Chrysler Pacifica Touring, both with Nevada plates, which were registered to the dead suspect.

JEB BUSH LOSES 2016 GOP PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION TO DONALD TRUMP (POLLS)

JEB BUSH LOSES 2016 GOP PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION TO DONALD TRUMP:

National Polls reveal DONALD TRUMP is supported by more than 32% of American voters.
National Polls also reveal JEB BUSH supported by only 3% of American voters.
The 2016 RNC Convention will take place JULY 18-21 in CLEVELAND, Ohio.
Who will be crowned as the GOP Presidential nominee?
Millions of voters believe TRUMP will walk away with this prize.
So how did Political Royal Family candidate JEB BUSH lose his bid for the 2016 GOP Presidential Nomination to a Loud Successful Business Mogul from NYC named DONALD TRUMP?

Donald Trump is picking up where he left off in 2015 when it comes to his favorite Twitter targets.

The brash billionaire and GOP front-runner fired off several attacks against Jeb Bush, Hillary Clinton and his latest foe: former President Bill Clinton.

Early in the morning, Trump called the former Florida governor a "sad case" with "no chance."

".@JebBush is a sad case. A total embarrassment to both himself and his family, he just announced he will continue to spend on Trump hit ads!" Trump tweeted.

He then hit the former secretary of state over her opposition to his call for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States.

"Hillary Clinton said that it is O.K. to ban Muslims from Israel by building a WALL, but not O.K. to do so in the U.S. We must be vigilant!"

Later in the day, the real estate mogul went on to compare her to Bush, using his favored "low energy" diss.

"Hillary Clinton doesn't have the strength or stamina to be president. Jeb Bush is a low energy individual, but Hillary is not much better!"

Finally, he attacked Bill Clinton -- who will soon appear on the campaign trail to support his wife's presidential bid -- by calling him a "hypocrite" on women's issues.

"I hope Bill Clinton starts talking about women's issues so that voters can see what a hypocrite he is and how Hillary abused those women!"

Trump had recently said that the former president's alleged abuse of women and extramarital affairs were "fair game" for attacks.

~ Jeb Bush Sinks Down Political Hole As Donald Trump Remains Republican Frontrunner

One year ago, some people thought that there was a strong chance Jeb Bush would become the Republican candidate for the 2016 presidential election.

Unfortunately for Mr. Bush, that isn’t looking very likely according to the polls. In fact, no matter how much he tries to attack his opponents, Jeb Bush keeps sinking further and further.

On Friday, the Wall Street Journal asked if Jeb Bush could save his presidency.

They first described his major problem.

“Yet Jeb Bush, who aspires to be the third President Bush in three decades, so far hasn’t found a sizable GOP market.

Often wobbling rhetorically, humbled by the crowded field, beleaguered by an insult-comic billionaire, his aura of inevitability vanished, if it ever existed.”

The article then notes that a comeback would be almost impossible, especially given that Jeb Bush has a 27.5 percent to 53.3 percent favorable/unfavorable rating, which is worse than the same rating for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

However, according to the New York Times, Jeb Bush still plans to save his candidacy.

“Jeb Bush and his supporters still have a pile of money to spend, remnants of $100 million raised when he seemed early last year to be a sure bet…And allies have just begun a new ad campaign in Iowa.”

Other campaigns appear to have counted him out altogether. But, in extensive interviews over the past week, aides to Mr. Bush and important allies described a long-shot plan to pull off what seems all but impossible: winning the Republican nomination for president.

The plan has six elements: keep attacking, avoid embarrassment in Iowa, do well in New Hampshire, woo Lindsey Graham, and — perhaps most importantly — use the family network to help.

Speaking of attacking, that’s just what Jeb Bush’s Republican running mate is doing.

Trump’s Twitter account lit up on this weekend with some nasty tweets.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump will release his first TV ad on Monday. The Washington Post says it raises the temperature of the GOP race.

“Donald Trump’s ad begins with a shot of President Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Then comes a U.S. battleship launching a cruise-missile strike. From there it moves swiftly through an explosive montage: The suspects in the recent California terrorist attack. Shadowy figures racing across the U.S.-Mexico border. Islamic State militants.”

The ad, even though it hasn’t been released, has been both praised and ridiculed on Twitter — in other words, it’s good PR for Trump.

Many Republicans, even ones who aren’t thrilled with Trump, believe that he is winning and Bush is losing because Trump “has balls.” Do you think Donald Trump will end up taking the Republican nomination? Do you think Jeb Bush is really finished? Give us your thoughts in the comments section.

BERNIE SANDERS TEAMS UP WITH HILLARY CLINTON TO DEFEAT TRUMP IN 2016

BERNIE SANDERS TEAMS UP WITH HILLARY CLINTON TO DEFEAT TRUMP IN 2016:
SANDERS IS SHIFTING FROM OPPONENT TO HILLARY'S MENTOR.
WAS THERE A 2016 DEAL MADE BETWEEN HILLARY & SANDERS?

Two weeks ago 2016 Presidential Candidate and Socialist U.S. Senator BERNIE SANDERS issued an public apology on air to his Opponent HILLARY CLINTON for a Voter Data Breach during a DEMOCRAT party debate in New Hampshire.
This past weekend BERNIE SANDERS joined Key DEMOCRAT leaders in attacking Jewish Billionaire and GOP Donor SHELDON ADELSON.
For several months SANDERS has attacked HILLARY over her close ties with Wall Street and Elite BILLIONAIRES.
Now it appears as if SANDERS is Collaborating with HILLARY'S campaign to defeat the presumptive 2016 GOP nominee DONALD J TRUMP.
Was there a 2016 Deal made between HILLARY and SANDERS?

Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, starting a two-day swing through Nevada, took aim Sunday at members of the Republican field for seeking the blessing of billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson.

At a rally in Reno that drew more than 2,000 people, Sanders spoke facetiously of an “Adelson caucus,” a reference to Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) and other Republicans who have met with the mega-donor in the hopes of securing a financial boost ahead of the first nominating contests.

“Sheldon Adelson has not invited me to speak with him,” said Sanders, who routinely decries the political influence of the “billionaire class.” During the rally, which was live-streamed on Periscope, Sanders said that the average contribution to his campaign has been less than $30.

Sanders's two-day swing through Nevada comes ahead of a month in which he plans to hunker down in Iowa and New Hampshire, the states with the first nominating contests.

Many analysts say that the senator from Vermont would probably need to win both to become a real threat to Hillary Clinton in the contest for the Democratic nomination.
Nevada holds its Democratic caucuses on Feb. 20, following the Iowa caucuses on Feb. 1 and the New Hampshire primary on Feb. 9.

“We think we have a shot here,” Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs said of Nevada. “Obviously, we’re working hard in Iowa and New Hampshire, but Bernie is running a national campaign.”

Sanders, who is scheduled to return to Iowa on Tuesday and New Hampshire this weekend, also sparred over social media on Sunday with the Republican front-runner, Donald Trump.

During an appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Sanders argued that he would better represent the economic interests of Trump’s working-class supporters, citing prior statements by Trump that wages in America are “too high.”

“Lie!” Trump said on Twitter after the broadcast, denying that he had said wages are too high.

Sanders responded with a tweet saying that Trump is “getting nervous that working families are catching on to whose interests he truly represents.” In an accompanying news release, Sanders pointed to multiple instances in which Trump said wages were too high.

Trump is among the Republican hopefuls who has met with Adelson, whom Forbes magazine estimates is worth $23.7 billion and who provided a financial boost during the 2012 presidential race to super PACs supporting GOP aspirants Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney.

Prior to his meeting with Adelson, Trump described it as a courtesy call rather than a solicitation for campaign donations. The two reportedly got together at the Venetian, a hotel and casino on the Las Vegas strip that is owned Adelson and was the site of a CNN-sponsored Republican debate this month.

Sanders plans to campaign Monday in the Las Vegas area, including at an evening rally planned in North Las Vegas.

LINDSEY GRAHAM BOWS OUT OF 2016 RACE; MOST SC VOTERS PREFER TRUMP

LINDSEY GRAHAM BOWS OUT OF 2016 RACE:
MOST SC VOTERS PREFER TRUMP.
SANTORUM WAS RIGHT; US TROOPS SHOULD STAY OUT OF SYRIA.
GRAHAM'S POLL NUMBERS REMAINED LOW & SC CONSTITUENTS DON'T TRUST HIM.

Sen. Lindsey Graham is dropping out of the presidential race, his campaign announced this morning.

Graham, a South Carolina Republican serving his third term, addressed his supporters in a video and an email.
"While we have run a campaign that has made a real difference, I have concluded this is not my time," Graham said.

Graham's focus on national security and fighting terrorism was influential in the overall primary debate, but he was not well known outside South Carolina or the Senate. He failed to poll above single digits nationally or in the early voting states.

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said that with Graham's announcement, "Republicans lost our most qualified, thoughtful, fearless and honest presidential candidate, not to mention the candidate with the best (and it seemed sometimes the only) sense of humor."

"Despite the disadvantages he faced in resources and debate opportunities, Lindsey’s message of serious statesmanship and problem-solving in public affairs, his forthright opposition to policies and attitudes that would endanger our country and reflect poorly on our party, and his genuine decency and humility won him many new admirers," McCain said in a statement.

Graham stood out in the crowded Republican field by promoting his efforts at compromise with Democrats on issues such as reducing the federal debt and fixing immigration laws.

"This has been a problem solver’s campaign. However the centerpiece of my campaign has been securing our nation," Graham said in his farewell video. "I got into this race to put forward a plan to win a war we cannot afford to lose and to turn back the tide of isolationism that was rising in our party.

I believe we have made enormous progress in this effort."

Graham, 60, won a third Senate term last year after defeating a big crowd of primary challengers without a runoff. He returns to the U.S. Senate with five years left on his term, and is frequently mentioned as potential defense secretary if a Republican wins the White House in 2016.

Although his poll numbers suffered in the last few weeks, even in his home state, he has the backing of several Republican leaders in South Carolina. If Graham chooses to endorse one of the other remaining candidates, it could sway some votes before South Carolina Republicans go to the polls in February.

"Senator Graham has an incredibly strong and loyal grassroots network in South Carolina," said South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Matt Moore. "Given Senator Graham's huge primary victory in South Carolina just last year, the Graham network could have a major impact on South Carolina's presidential primary."

Graham began exploring the possibility of a campaign early this year and officially declared his candidacy on June 1.
He raised enough money to travel to Iowa and New Hampshire, but started losing ground when the national Republican party and the sponsors of the televised debates divided the field into front runners and long shots, and he was relegated to the second tier debates.

Depsite several stand out debate performances, his poll numbers never went up enough to qualify for the prime time events, where he would have relished the confrontations with Donald Trump and the rest of the field.

Monday's decision allows Graham's name to be removed from South Carolina's Feb. 20 presidential ballot.

GOP LAS VEGAS DEBATE WINNER ANNOUNCED; CONGRATS REINCE PRIEBUS

GOP LAS VEGAS DEBATE WINNER ANNOUNCED:
CONGRATS REINCE PRIEBUS

The real Winner of the 2015 Las Vegas GOP Debate is RNC Chairman Reince Priebus.
Reince Priebus won this intense Debate even though he wasn't on stage and isn't campaigning to be elected US President next November.
Why?
Reince wins for his Brilliant Political Strategy of recruiting a large pool of Competent, Qualified, Intelligent candidates for Voters to choose from.
This large pool of Presidential candidates provides a tailored selection of Contenders to voters and helps to develop the true GOP Nominee's Debating Skills against HILLARY CLINTON.
Congrats Reince Priebus For This Brilliant a Strategy!

The day after the GOP's fifth primary debate, Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus brushed off concerns about a possible contested convention during an interview on "CBS This Morning" early Wednesday.

When asked if he expected a brokered convention in Cleveland next year, Priebus said, "I highly doubt it."

"I think most likely we'll have a presumptive nominee by mid-April, end of March -- but probably mid-April," he added. "And you know, it's because of the way the primary rules are set, it's pretty difficult to get to a contested convention. But certainly if that happened we'll be prepared -- but it's highly unlikely."

Talk about a 'brokered' or contested convention reached a fever pitch last week when the Washington Post reported on a dinner where top Republicans discussed what would happen if, in the lead-up to the Cleveland gathering next summer, no candidate received enough delegates to win the nomination.

Republican presidential hopefuls Donald Trump and Ben Carson both insinuated late last week that they could leave the party after those discussions.

Trump reaffirmed his commitment to the GOP during the debate, and Carson suggested that assurances he had received from Priebus that the GOP wouldn't be doing anything to "thwart the will of the people" had assuaged his concerns.

Priebus further dismissed speculation that the GOP meeting involved manipulation of the primary process.

"People asking questions about how does the winner-take-all primary work and what happens on Super Tuesday, and how many delegates are awarded on March 1st -- those are innocent questions that normal political people ask. It's not a meeting to discuss how we're gonna overthrow the whole process and take over a convention," he said.

"That's absurd and I know you're doing the right thing by asking the questions...it's just that that particular narrative is ridiculous."

When asked if some controversial comments from Donald Trump -- the current GOP front-runner -- worried Priebus, the RNC chair said "not particularly."

"I've been through this before as well. I mean, four years ago it was the same thing," Priebus said. "People were saying we're gonna have a contested convention and then it was Herman Cain and then it was Newt Gingrich, and then it was Rick Perry." The GOP field this year is larger and stronger than it was in 2012, however.

When pressed on the party's need to diversify its base and win over minority communities -- voting blocs like Hispanics and African Americans that traditionally lean Democratic -- Priebus assured CBS News that the GOP was doing just that.

"If you're not in on a daily basis in serious Hispanic and black communities across the country, then showing up a few months ahead of time isn't gonna solve the problem," he said. "And what you saw in 2014 was the beginning of a new Republican party, where we almost won the Hispanic vote in Colorado, we got 28 percent of the black vote in Ohio.

And it was a combination of yes, being good on the issues, but it was also saturating communities with Republicans that are offering a different vision, better jobs, choice on education. And that kind of message works."

DO I LOOK LIKE A TERRORIST TO YOU? - LAS VEGAS AIRPORT

DO I LOOK LIKE A TERRORIST TO YOU? - LAS VEGAS AIRPORT

A NATION DIVIDED AGAINST ITSELF CANNOT STAND.

For the last six years extreme PROFILING of BLACK Passengers and BLACK Travelers has increased.

TSA Personnel, Airport Security,  Train Station Security and Bus Station Security Personnel appear to be practicing extreme PROFILING of BLACK citizens in the United States, even when those BLACK citizens are dressed in normal, regular attire.

Regardless of how Courteous, Polite and Hospitable BLACK people behave when traveling, they are frequently treated with Disdain by TSA or Security Personnel.

In fact BLACK citizens who travel are frequently treated as if they are HOMELESS people seeking Shelter.

However rarely does TSA Personnel, Airport Security,  Train Station Security and Bus Station Security Personnel question WHITE Travelers or request to see their Traveling documents until they are actually Boarding.

It's quite obvious that this extreme PROFILING and Disdain towards BLACK citizens who travel is a result of Pres OBAMA'S Racially-divisive POLICIES.

Whether anyone wishes to admit it or not, many of Pres OBAMA'S Policies have divided this nation more so than ever.

Especially in the area of RACE RELATIONS.

A Nation Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand.

Congressman Diane Black (R-TN-06) and Congressman Bill Flores (R-TX-17) have introduced H.R. 4026, the Nondiscriminatory Transportation Screening Act.

The legislation would allow Americans to use gun license permits as permissible identification for Transportation Security Administration (TSA) purposes while maintaining strong protections for gun owners’ privacy rights and prohibiting government tracking of individuals who choose to present this identification at airport screenings.

The bill comes ahead of the 2015 Thanksgiving holiday season, where 25 million Americans are expected to board flights to travel destinations throughout the country.

Currently, the TSA explicitly bans the use of handgun licenses at airport checkpoints, despite the fact that these licenses meet all criteria for “verifying identity documents” under current law. Black and Flores released the following statements:

“We all understand the need for stringent security standards at our nation’s airports, but there must also be a place for commonsense.
It is mind-boggling that the TSA has reportedly accepted Costco membership cards at airport screenings, yet its website expressly prohibits the use of handgun carry permits.

Why the double standard?

Handgun licenses are a government-issued form of identification and no one has given me a valid reason why they cannot be accepted at TSA checkpoints.
Americans who exercise their Second Amendment freedoms have bared the brunt of much hostility from this Administration over the last seven years.

As a handgun carry permit holder myself, I believe this should be a simple, bipartisan step we can take to stop the government’s marginalization of gun-owners and alleviate confusion for millions of American travelers this holiday season,” said Congressman Diane Black.

“As travel continues to be a vital piece of our nation’s economy, TSA should accept approved government issued concealed handgun licenses as a valid form of identification.

The requirements to obtain a concealed license are similar and often times stricter than that of obtaining a standard ID card. Earlier this year, the Texas House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bipartisan resolution petitioning Congress to allow the TSA to accept concealed handgun licenses.

Concealed handgun licenses contain all of the identifying information required by the TSA.

It is time they recognize these licenses as acceptable forms of identification.

The Nondiscriminatory Transportation Screening Act provides a commonsense approach for the TSA to update its policies on permissible verifying documents,” said Congressman Bill Flores.

Eric Holder Vows To Protect Voting Rights At La Raza Meeting In Vegas (Decision 2012)

Holder vows fight for civil rights at La Raza meeting

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder on Saturday told an Hispanic civil rights group that the nation's fight to ensure racial equality, fairness and justice for all "remains far from over" and he vowed to step up prosecution of those who discriminate against Latinos, African-Americans and other minorities.

He thanked the National Council of La Raza for leading the way for decades to protect Latinos and other disenfranchised immigrants and Americans. And he said President Barack Obama's Justice Department would work hard this election year to ensure voters have equal ballot access no matter their heritage or race.

"Our nation's struggle to overcome injustice and eliminate disparities remains far from over," Holder said, speaking to a luncheon audience of 1,850 people on the opening day of the four-day conference in Las Vegas. "We have further to travel on the road to equality."

The nation's first African-American attorney general, Holder was the keynote speaker at the conference of the largest U.S. civil rights organization representing Latinos, a rising political power in Nevada and the nation. In general, Hispanics are a Democratic-leaning voting bloc that could decide the White House race.

President Obama is sending Vice President Joe Biden to address the group on Tuesday, the last day of the conference of 5,000 La Raza members at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney sent one of his top Hispanic advisers to the conference. Former U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez wasn't offered a speaking role, but he greeted people attending a Latino Expo on Saturday as part of the conference.

Holder appeared relaxed, joking it was good to get out of Washington. Two weeks ago, lawmakers voted to hold him in contempt of Congress as Republicans pummel him over a botched government gun-tracking operation nicknamed " Fast and Furious."

"It's particularly nice to be outside of Washington, D.C.," Holder said.

A member of the audience shouted, "We love you!"

"I love you back," Holder said. "It's been an interesting few weeks in Washington."

In his 18-minute speech, Holder said he was pleased the U.S. Supreme Court recently threw out most of an Arizona law to crack down on illegal immigrants in the border state next to Mexico. But Holder said he was disappointed the high court upheld the most controversial part of the law that would allow police to ask for papers proving a person's immigration status if the person is stopped for some other reason.

The "show me your papers" part of the law must be narrowly enforced, the high court said, or it, too, would be open to a separate legal challenge.

The attorney general said the Justice Department would be watching enforcement of the Arizona law carefully, ready to intervene if it is abused and used to indiscriminately stop suspected illegal immigrants.

"Such laws cannot be seen as a license to engage in racial profiling," Holder said to applause.

Holder praised Obama for recently instructing federal authorities not to deport young adult children of undocumented immigrants who grew up in the United States. Instead, the Obama administration will launch a program to let young immigrants apply for two-year work permits.

Holder said the administration would continue to press Congress to pass the DREAM Act, which would provide a path to U.S. citizenship for those young immigrants who attend college or join the U.S. military. Meanwhile, he said there's no reason to waste money and effort to deport them.

Obama's new policy will "make our immigration enforcement effort not only more efficient and cost-effective, but also more just," Holder said. "There's no question this action represents a significant and a long overdue improvement of our immigration policy."

U.S. Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., addressed the conference lunch ahead of Holder. She, too, praised Obama's actions on immigration and called for passage of the DREAM Act . She also contrasted her views with those of her Republican opponent for U.S. Senate, incumbent Sen. Dean Heller, who doesn't support the DREAM Act and has praised the Arizona law.

"He says he wants to bring it here to Nevada," Berkley said. "Nevada doesn't want the Arizona law. Nevada doesn't need the Arizona law. And Nevada will do just fine without it."

Holder praised Berkley, calling the Democratic supporter of Obama "an extremely effective advocate for the people of Nevada."

"And I think she would make an excellent U.S. senator," he said.

Heller did not attend the La Raza conference. His campaign said he was spending the weekend celebrating his 28th wedding anniversary with his family and campaigning in Reno. Heller is among the Nevada politicians on the conference's honorary host committee, however.

Heller and Romney campaign officials manned booths at the Latino Expo, a free event for Hispanics and other members of the community being held with the conference. Democrats also reached out to the Latino crowd with more than 25,000 people expected to visit the free expo.

In an interview at the expo, Romney's Hispanic adviser, Gutierrez, said Latinos should have a natural affinity for Republicans' conservative policies, including "family, faith and hard work."

Gutierrez criticized Obama for not working on comprehensive immigration reform and only offering Hispanics short-term solutions in an election-year pitch for votes. He said stimulus spending didn't offer long-term job prospects for Americans, including Hispanics who suffer higher rates of unemployment - about 11 percent compared with 8.2 percent overall.

Gutierrez said Obama's offer of two-year work permits for young adult children of immigrants was a "patchwork solution" that didn't solve the long-running undocumented immigrant problem.

The presidential election, Gutierrez said, would come down to who could do a better job at boosting the economy to create jobs and improve the lives of Hispanics and all Americans. He said Romney's business experience makes him more qualified than Obama, a former U.S. senator.

"It's about who can do the job because this country is in trouble," Gutierrez said. "We need the right leadership. This is the biggest CEO job in the world. … It is obvious that we need a change. We need a positive change."

In recent weeks, Romney has been stepping up his outreach to Latinos, particularly in battleground states such as Nevada where they made up about 15 percent of the electorate in the last election. Four years ago, Obama overwhelmingly won Hispanics in Nevada by a ratio of 3 -to-1 over his GOP presidential foe, John McCain, and he remains popular among Latinos.

In June, Romney named dozens of top Republican Hispanics as national and state advisers to his campaign, including Gutierrez and Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval. Gutierrez was commerce secretary for four years under former President George W. Bush.

Sandoval delivered a videotaped welcome to the La Raza conference.

Lisa Navarrete, an adviser to the president of the La Raza organization, said Romney lost a good chance to address Latinos. She said his Hispanic adviser Gutierrez could only come on Saturday and the conference organizers couldn't fit him into the schedule at the last minute.

"We think it was a missed opportunity," Navarrete said. "Our community doesn't know Governor Romney very well. If he wants to engage the community he has to address the community. For us, we're disappointed."
