WASHINGTON — Steve Bannon’s exit from the White House drew an immediate backlash from his allies in the party’s populist wing, who fear their agenda is becoming sidelined within the Trump administration.

“I don’t have any longer the expectations that Trump even can keep the rest of his promises," Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, told NBC News on Friday after the announcement that the chief strategist would be leaving the administration.

The uproar threatens to divide Trump’s supporters during the most difficult stretch of his presidency yet and before a critical legislative push next month in which Congress must raise the debt ceiling, pass a budget, and make headway on tax reform.

Trump has faced withering criticism in recent days, including from members of his own party, over his response to the violence at last weekend's white nationalist demonstrations in Charlottesville, Virginia, and his defense of "very fine people" who marched with neo-Nazis there.

Trump thanked Bannon early Saturday in a tweet, saying: "He came to the campaign during my run against Crooked Hillary Clinton - it was great!"

King, whose hardline immigration stance made him a popular figure at Breitbart News, which Bannon ran before joining Trump's campaign, said the White House was being taken over by “northeasterners” instead of ideological conservatives, which "really hurts the long-term strategy of the Trump administration.”

Breitbart announced late Friday afternoon that Bannon had rejoined the news site as executive chairman.

In an MSNBC appearance on Friday, Pollak said Trump had so far satisfied his base’s concerns, but warned "if he veers away, if he pulls an Arnold Schwarzenegger and tries to reinvent himself as liberal, he will see that support erode very, very quickly."

While Breitbart was a critical early supporter of the president’s political rise, running interviews and favorable articles even before he announced his candidacy, their backing has not been absolute and their coverage has taken a special interest in Trump’s staffing decisions.

When Trump feuded with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a popular figure among immigration restrictionists, the site pushed back with stories declaring that he “embodies the movement” Trump led and that his exit would “endanger the administration.”

More recently, Breitbart portrayed Bannon’s shaky status as part of a war for control of the White House between “economic nationalists,” the web site's favored side, and “globalists” like chief economic adviser Gary Cohn, National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster and Deputy National Security Adviser Dina Powell, all of whom featured prominently in the site's coverage.

Breitbart White House reporter Charlie Spiering’s reporting straightforwardly referred to the trio as “Bannon’s enemies in the White House” and the coverage has portrayed Cohn as too close to the financial world (he’s a former Goldman Sachs executive) and McMaster as overly hawkish on Afghanistan and weak on Islamic terror groups.

Trump weighed in on both McMaster and Bannon during the conflict, saying that McMaster was “a good man, very pro-Israel” in a statement earlier this month and telling reporters on Tuesday that Bannon was “a good man” and “not a racist” while hinting at his possible departure.

The anti-McMaster chatter grew loud enough to draw in figures like Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who decried a “disgraceful” campaign against him by the “alt right” in a statement this week. "Such smear tactics should not be tolerated and deserve an emphatic response," he said.

The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page also backed McMaster, drawing corresponding coverage in Breitbart with headlines like “Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal Tries to Take Over Trump White House for McMaster, Globalists.”

The tensions only escalated when Bannon called a reporter at the liberal publication The American Prospect and undercut the administration’s tough talk on North Korea’s nuclear program, saying “there’s no military solution” with acceptable losses and that “they got us.”

On the the other end of the political spectrum, Bannon’s ouster could be a small step toward easing tensions with elected Republicans upset over Trump’s Charlottesville response and who had previously expressed concerns about Bannon’s role.

Bannon, who once called Breitbart "the platform for the alt-right," had long been decried by anti-hate groups over his site's coverage, which included a tag for stories on "black crime" and ran op-ed articles by far right European politicians. In the days leading up to his exit, Reps. Pete King, R-N.Y., and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., had both explicitly called for his firing.

“Those who relish culture wars & celebrate political polarization have no place leading a country in profound need of healing & unity,” Congressman Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., tweeted in response to the news.

President-elect Donald Trump should not select Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus as his Chief of Staff, says Michael Savage, the national talk radio host and author of the new book Scorched Earth: Restoring the Country After Obama.

Priebus is “the enemy within,” Savage warns.

“He’s the RNC! Everything the voters rejected,” Savage tells Breitbart News. “He will steer Trump away from every policy we sent him to D.C. to change. He is the enemy within. He is [Paul] Ryan, [Mitch] McConnell, and the Old Guard. They do not want change. ‘Out with the old, in with the new.'”

A close Ryan ally, Priebus was responsible for the GOP “autopsy” following the Romney-Ryan loss of 2012.

One of its conclusions held that, to win elections, Republicans must embrace an immigration agenda that would import future voters who tend to overwhelmingly support Democrat policies.

The Priebus manifesto argued against opposing amnesty and appealing to the Republican electorate’s “core constituency.”

We must embrace and champion comprehensive immigration reform. If we do not, our Party’s appeal will continue to shrink to its core constituencies only,” the Priebus report stated.

By contrast, for years Savage has argued that Republican candidates should run campaigns on “borders, language, and culture.”

“I call him ‘Rinse,'” Savage said of Priebus, adding that’s “what Trump should do with his advice.”

Savage’s talk radio show, which is one of the most listened-to talk radio programs in the country, reaches an audience over 20 million listeners and is syndicated by over some 400 stations nationwide. This week, Savage will be inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in the category of Spoken Word On-Air Personality.

As one of his biggest supporters during the presidential election campaign, Michael Savage vowed to hold Donald Trump’s feet to the fire should he win, ensuring that the real-estate billionaire fulfills his promise to reform Washington.

Less than a week after Trump’s victory, the nationally syndicated talk-radio host is keeping his word, criticizing the appointment of Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus as White House chief of staff.

“We’ve gone from RINOs to Rinso in one election,” Savage told WND, dubbing Priebus with the name of the iconic laundry soap.

Savage said he wanted to make it clear he was not turning on Trump.

“I’m not attacking Trump at all,” he told WND. “I am advising Trump to beware. Because, if he loses his base on the first day, what’s going to happen in the first month?

“This is a criticism of the establishment that is so all-powerful that they’ve already entangled him,” Savage explained.

Savage has described his latest book, “Scorched Earth: Restoring the Country After Obama,” as “an architectural plan for Trump.” Trump has been a frequent guest on the “The Savage Nation,” including on Election Day in the hours before Trump stunned establishment media and pundits with his victory over Hillary Clinton.

He noted Priebus has argued for embracing “comprehensive immigration reform,” which opponents regard as de facto amnesty. And back in April, Savage pointed out, Priebus said he would not let the Trump campaign take over the Republican Party apparatus if he won the nomination, the New York Times reported.

“If we don’t raise our voices now, and say, ‘No, over our dead bodies you’re not doing this to us again, Boehner and McConnell, who are they going to put on the Supreme Court?” Savage asked.

“Are we going to get the conservative judges we were promised, or are we going to get middle-of-the-roaders like Roberts, RINO-Rinso judges?” he asked. “On trade, will the Rinsos pass TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership), after we were told they were going to oppose TPP?

“We know what they did to us in 2014,” Savage said, referring to the omnibus spending bill and other measures regarded as a betrayal of a party base that gave the GOP sizable majorities in Congress in the midterm elections. “Didn’t Boehner do exactly this, Boehner and McConnell? They promised all and gave nothing.”

Savage acknowledged that the appointment of former Breitbart chief Steve Bannon as senior adviser to Trump provides a counterbalance to Priebus, but he argued Priebus will be leading the effort to fill 4,000 administration positions.

“Priebus will create the top layer of bureaucracy in the country, not Bannon,” Savage said. “Trump could have chosen Bannon, but he didn’t.”

He also noted that the chief of staff is the gatekeeper to the White House.

“He decides who sleeps in the Lincoln bedroom,” Savage said.

“We’re going to have lobbyists; we’re going to have Republican loyalists. We’ll have the same, exact thing we got under Boehner and McConnell,” said Savage.

“Who do you think they’re going to pick? They’re not going to pick young Turks who want to change Washington. They want the status quo.

“It’s going to be the Chamber of Commerce. It’s as though Jeb Bush won.”

Savage added a word of perspective, however, imagining the alternative.

“Even if we only get 10 percent of what Trump promised us, we’re 1,000 percent better than if she had won,” he said, referring to Clinton.

“Remember what she would have done,” Savage said.

“The Second Amendment would have been gone, the First Amendment emasculated. She would have increased the surveillance state, she would have flooded America with Muslims, raised taxes on the middle class, and day and night propaganda about the evils of the white race.”

***** Who is Gen John F Kelly, the new White House chief of staff?


Kelly spent 40 years as a Marine, and six months as Homeland Security secretary where he cracked down on illegal immigrants.

Donald Trump is said to have been recently taken with the desire to have a “general” as his chief of staff to sort out a White House beset by internal warfare, not to mention its external problems.

While some advisers have questioned the wisdom of the move, the president has got himself a bona fide retired four-star US Marine Corps general in the shape of John F Kelly.

Kelly’s appointment, announced in a late afternoon Friday tweet by the president, as his new White House chief of staff, sees him move from his role as the secretary of homeland security, where the president says he has done a “spectacular job” and is a “true star” of his administration.

Kelly, aged 67 and a native of Boston, stepped down in 2016 from US southern command, where he was responsible for US military activities and relationships in Latin America and the Caribbean, including the controversial detention facility at Guantánamo Bay.

While at homeland security, Kelly has presided over a crackdown on illegal migrants and a more aggressive posture for the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Kelly has won Trump’s praise for a fall in the numbers of recorded crossing along the southern border, even though there has still been no construction of the president’s promised border wall with Mexico.

Kelly had told lawmakers during his confirmation hearings in January that he supported Trump about the need for a wall, though he also spoke about the need for extra border agents and better technology. A hiring spree of agents is under way, despite concerns over vetting of candidates.

Kelly, who had enlisted in the Marines in 1970, served as commander of US southern command under Obama from 2012.

While in that role, he differed with Barack Obama on key issues, and had warned of vulnerabilities along the United States’ southern border with Mexico.

At the time Trump picked him for Homeland Security, he was the third general tapped for a high-level job in the new administration. Trump had also nominated retired Gen James Mattis to lead the Department of Defense and picked retired Lt Gen Michael Flynn to be his national security adviser – a shortlived move ended when he resigned over his misleading account of his Russian contacts.

Kelly, who is from an Irish Catholic family, is the most senior US officer to have lost a child in the “war on terror”. His son Robert, a first lieutenant in the marines, was killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2010.

At Southcom, Kelly quickly developed a reputation for opposition to Obama’s intended closure of Guantánamo Bay.

Kelly will hope to have a better relationship with Anthony Scaramucci, the White House’s new communications director, whose relationship this month appears to have spelled the end for Reince Priebus in the chief of staff role.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has removed his name from consideration for a position in President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet, the transition team announced Friday.

Giuliani, who is currently a vice chairman on the presidential transition team, had been rumored to be in consideration for secretary of state.

"My desire to be in the Cabinet was great but it wasn't that great and he had a lot of terrific candidates and I thought I could play a better role being on the outside and continuing to be his close friend and adviser," Giuliani told Fox News' Neil Cavuto.

Trump met with Giuliani on Nov. 29., when the matter was discussed. He confirmed to Fox News that he had only been interested in being secretary of state.

"Honestly, the other positions I didn't have an interest in, so that really was the only one I had any real interest in," he told Cavuto.

Giuliani said he now intends to continue his work in the private sector. He also warned against the selection of Mitt Romney for the position, saying the former Massachusetts governor had "gone over the line" in previous criticisms he made about Trump.

"I will support [Trump's] decision, but my advice would be that Mitt went a little too far. You can make friends and make up but I would not see him as a candidate for the Cabinet," Giuliani told Cavuto.

Trump praised Giuliani in a statement, calling him “an extraordinarily talented and patriotic American.”

"He is and continues to be a close personal friend, and as appropriate, I will call upon him for advice and can see an important place for him in the administration at a later date."

Reince Priebus, tapped to be Trump’s chief of staff, said that Giuliani was “was vetted by our team for any possible conflicts and passed with flying colors."

Donald Trump may be giving some in the Republican establishment heartburn, but Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus claims he sees no reason for concern in the bombastic GOP front runner’s candidacy.

“Look at our debates. We’re blowing the doors off these debates,” Priebus told TIME of the Republican nomination race this cycle.

“They’re becoming like World Series–type events that we could never have predicted.

And that will be a good thing for our party, we have to break into the culture of America and we’re doing it.”

Calling Trump a “varsity” candidate, Priebus predicted in advance of this week’s meeting of the 168 members of the RNC that Trump would acquit himself well in a general-election matchup, maintaining that Trump has been a positive force within the GOP primary. “I think that we’ve got sort of the varsity team of candidates out there,

” Priebus said of the 12-person field, adding that the entertainment value has increased the party’s visibility. “I think any one of our candidates can plug into what we’re building and win a cultural vote in this country.”

Priebus’ support comes even as Trump has torn up the 2013 Growth and Opportunity Project report Priebus commission to lead the party back from defeat in 2012.

The document called for more aggressive outreach into minority communities, particularly to Hispanic voters, and explicitly called for comprehensive immigration reform — a position at odds with Trump’s hard-line stances.

In response to the report, the RNC has invested tens of millions of dollars in a permanent field and data operation, which Priebus confidently argued is larger than Hillary Clinton’s vaunted operation. “I think we’re bigger,” he said. “We’ve got more.”

Priebus also maintained he’s unconcerned that the rancorous primary will affect the ultimate nominee, saying it will be “ancient history” in just a few months. “We don’t event remember what happened in August [2015],” he said.

“In a vacuum everything gets over-analyzed, but in the long run I think once you get to a nominee we’re going to have an eternity to bring everything together and get everybody on the same page.”

TIME:  Do you have the sense that this primary process is affecting the party’s chances in the general?

Reince Priebus: We’re charged with putting the ground game and the data operating and the turnout operation together whether voters are excited about the election in 2016 or they’re not excited about 2016.

So, by staying out of the primary, we’ve sort of reaped the benefits from the overall excitement of the base.

Now whether that’s for one candidate or the other is a different story. Those disagreements probably deserve a different analysis.

But as far as recruiting volunteers to get the work done that we need to do, our interest and the interests of our volunteers is off the charts.

And in terms of the rhetoric, you seem unconcerned.

Yeah, I’m confident pulling the party together on message and in elbow grease when this is all over.

Because you know the truth is, when you get to June, July, August, September, October, a month is like a year and a week is like a month. And it’s like an eternity.

And so while we bite our nails and wonder about whether a tough primary is bad for our general-election prospects, or some people think it’s good.

The truth is, I don’t think it matters because there’s so much time involved once you get to a nominee that it’s all sort of ancient history.

Even as I sit here today, July and August is like ancient history.

We don’t event remember what happened in August.

So my point is, in a vacuum everything gets over-analyzed, but in the long run I think once you get to a nominee we’re going to have an eternity to bring everything together and get everybody on the same page.

Does the Clinton operation keep you up at night?

No, because I think we’re bigger. We’ve got more.

And it doesn’t keep me up at night because I know that even if we were able to get to parity with Obama, Mitt Romney would have won.

Even if Romney was able to get to 60%, he would have won.

The problem we’ve got is that if you don’t have a data operation that’s worth a dime, and you’re not in Hispanic, black and Asian communities on a year-round basis, and you’re not targeting your base voters and faith voters and veterans on a year-round basis, you can’t win.

Certainly you can’t win if it’s within a field goal.

You have to get the race within a field goal, and then a sophisticated infrastructure can take you over the top.

So that’s what we’re trying to make sure, that we never embarrass people again with an operation that isn’t up to par with our opponents and that’s what we’ve done.

And we’ve done a good job of it, and no RNC has done better — ever — not even in a presidential year have they done what we’re doing, even by a long shot.

So you need the right candidate to get you in field-goal range. Are you worried that any candidates now can’t get there?

No, I think it’s the opposite. I think that we’ve got sort of the varsity team of candidates out there.

I think any one of our candidates can plug into what we’re building and win a cultural vote in this country.

And that’s our job.

Our job is to make sure whoever that they’ve got something that’s far better than what we had four, eight years ago, and we do.

You’ve said that a lot of the turmoil in this cycle is due to the number of candidates. Is that still the case?

Yeah, certainly, when you have 12 varsity candidates left it makes everything a little bit more complicated, there’s no doubt and I can’t deny that that’s not true — it is true.

But it doesn’t mean that, by the end of March or mid-April, the end of April, that it isn’t going to be very clear.

There’s only so much money to go around, there’s only so long everyone can keep fighting, and at some point I think there’s going to be real clarity, and I think the timing is going to be similar to the timeframe that it’s been in the past.

I know the rules pretty well, I’m pretty confident in how delegates are allocated, I helped write a lot of the rules and I believe that clarity will come very soon.

But you’re planning for a multi-balloted convention.

You obviously prepare for any scenario.

Any serious organization would do something like that, and we’re confident in the process that is in place and also the rules governing the convention and the allocation of delegates.

But, the other thing is we’ve written the rules, we’ve argued over the rules for years, so we understand them.

It’s not like we’re sitting here in a vacuum in a world outside of our own universe.

In other words, we live this world every day.

We have a legal department, I was the former general counsel, I’ve been chairman for six years.

There aren’t too many people who know more about how the rules work than I do or my legal staff, so it’s not like I need some sort of expert help to understand our own governing rules or how our convention might run.

Some supporters of Donald Trump and others have suggested that the RNC could rig the convention.

Either way you’re putting a lot of faith in the convention committees.

Any candidate can come and get a lesson on what the rules are — the RNC and the convention.

The rules are the rules, they’re written, they’re clear, and they’re going to be followed.

There really isn’t — if someone has a majority of delegates in order to win the nomination, they’re going to be the nominee.

The only question is if that isn’t the case, then you’re taking floor votes. And I think that’s highly unlikely, but that’s what would happen if it did.

What of those concerns about fixing the system?

Ultimately if you’ve got the votes on the floor, you’re going to be the nominee. And I think people who’ve known me as chairman — now in my sixth year — I’m about as straight up as anyone that’s anyone that’s ever sat in this office.

I don’t think too many people look at me as a game player, and I’m certainly not hanging out on K-street at cocktail receptions.

Listen, I don’t get involved. I’m not going to get in the middle of all these candidate issues. It’s a bad place for me to be. I’ll let all these folks argue about this stuff, and I’m going to stay out of it.

Is there a lesson that the entire GOP can learn from the Trump phenomenon even if he’s not the nominee?

I certainly think that broad truths are something that people are starving for in the country, and I think people are looking for genuine and authentic people, and it’s really important to always be authentic and genuine.

But I also think there are some unique qualities that he has in that he can get earned media in ways that a lot of people aren’t able to do, and that may be unique to him too, so it’s not necessarily something that other people can simply copy.

I think the key is, we’ve got so many good candidates out there that as long as we get to a nominee and we bring the party together, which I’m confident we can do, having all of these unique voices all on the same page, I think that will be very valuable when you consider the fact that Hillary Clinton, her numbers are in the ditch.

From all the analysis and all the talking that’s going on in the Republican primary, the fact is, Hillary Clinton’s numbers are atrocious.

When you’ve got people who don’t trust you, who think you’re a liar, and now we’re getting more emails dumped from the State Department, she’s got big problems.

We’re in great shape to win and I think that one lesson that’s going to come from this primary is that drama and intrigue are a good thing in America today.

Boring and old news is a bad thing.

And so I think that’s the lesson that people are going to take from 2016.

GOP leaders met this week to discuss what to do if they end up next year with a contested convention... if they have to use political tricks to block Donald Trump.

The GOP apparently doesn’t mind ignoring the will of their voters. Cenk Uygur, John Iadarola (Think Tank), Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show Podcast), and Mark Thompson, hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down.

"More than 20 top GOP officials discussed at a dinner on Monday the party’s strategy in the event of a brokered convention amid Donald Trump’s consistent lead in the polls.

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) listened as several longtime party members argued the establishment must lay the groundwork for a floor fight if Trump storms through the presidential primaries, five sources familiar with the meeting told The Washington Post.

The sources said Priebus and McConnell were mostly silent during the deliberation and did not signal support for an explicit anti-Trump effort.

But both men did acknowledge that a stalemated convention is something the party should be ready for.”*

~ RNC Chair Reince Priebus: A contested convention "highly unlikely"

The day after the GOP's fifth primary debate, Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus brushed off concerns about a possible contested convention during an interview on "CBS This Morning" early Wednesday.

When asked if he expected a brokered convention in Cleveland next year, Priebus said, "I highly doubt it."

"I think most likely we'll have a presumptive nominee by mid-April, end of March -- but probably mid-April," he added. "And you know, it's because of the way the primary rules are set, it's pretty difficult to get to a contested convention. But certainly if that happened we'll be prepared -- but it's highly unlikely."

Talk about a 'brokered' or contested convention reached a fever pitch last week when the Washington Post reported on a dinner where top Republicans discussed what would happen if, in the lead-up to the Cleveland gathering next summer, no candidate received enough delegates to win the nomination.

Republican presidential hopefuls Donald Trump and Ben Carson both insinuated late last week that they could leave the party after those discussions. 

Trump reaffirmed his commitment to the GOP during the debate, and Carson suggested that assurances he had received from Priebus that the GOP wouldn't be doing anything to "thwart the will of the people" had assuaged his concerns.

Priebus further dismissed speculation that the GOP meeting involved manipulation of the primary process.

"People asking questions about how does the winner-take-all primary work and what happens on Super Tuesday, and how many delegates are awarded on March 1st -- those are innocent questions that normal political people ask. It's not a meeting to discuss how we're gonna overthrow the whole process and take over a convention," he said. 

"That's absurd and I know you're doing the right thing by asking the questions...it's just that that particular narrative is ridiculous."

When asked if some controversial comments from Donald Trump -- the current GOP front-runner -- worried Priebus, the RNC chair said "not particularly."

"I've been through this before as well. I mean, four years ago it was the same thing," Priebus said. "People were saying we're gonna have a contested convention and then it was Herman Cain and then it was Newt Gingrich, and then it was Rick Perry." The GOP field this year is larger and stronger than it was in 2012, however.

When pressed on the party's need to diversify its base and win over minority communities -- voting blocs like Hispanics and African Americans that traditionally lean Democratic -- Priebus assured CBS News that the GOP was doing just that.

"If you're not in on a daily basis in serious Hispanic and black communities across the country, then showing up a few months ahead of time isn't gonna solve the problem," he said. "And what you saw in 2014 was the beginning of a new Republican party, where we almost won the Hispanic vote in Colorado, we got 28 percent of the black vote in Ohio.

And it was a combination of yes, being good on the issues, but it was also saturating communities with Republicans that are offering a different vision, better jobs, choice on education. And that kind of message works."
