Former UNC President Bill Friday says The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock actor died at his home in Dare County, North Carolina around 7 a.m.
Friday, who is a close friend of the actor, confirmed the news to WITN News.
Emergency medical crews responded to Griffith's home this morning, Dare County Sheriff J.D. Doughtie told WAVY.com.
Griffith, who was born in Mt. Airy, N.C., was launched to fame as Sheriff Andy Taylor in The Andy Griffith Show for the CBS from 1960-1968. On the show, Ron Howard played his son, Opie. He starred on other shows and in films, but found his greatest success again with legal drama Matlock, from 1986 to 1995. He played the title character, Ben Matlock.
In 2000, Griffith underwent quadruple heart-bypass surgery and in 2007 had hip surgery after a fall.
Griffith and his first wife, Barbara Bray Edwards, married in 1949. They were divorced in 1972 and she got custody of their daughter Dixie and he got custody of son Sam, who died in 1996 after years of alcoholism. His second marriage, to Greek actress Solica Cassuto, lasted eight years, from 1973 to 1981.
He and Cindi Knight were married on April 12, 1983, when she was 27 and he was 56. A private man, he told the Virginian-Pilot in 2008 in a lengthy profile by Mal Vincent that he's friendly and outgoing to a point, but has been known to turn down requests for autographs. "When my wife, Cindi, and I go somewhere and we don't want to be recognized. She says, 'Don't talk.' "

Lark Voorhies, who played the spoiled student on “Saved by the Bell” from 1989 to 1993, has fans all atwitter over her drastic new appearance.
The 38-year-old actress looked barely recognizable during a recent interview with Yahoo!’s “The Yo Show,” in which she wore a different hairstyle and heavily-applied makeup over a puffy face.
During the chat, Voorhies admitted she would be open to the possibility of an onscreen reunion with her former cast mates Mark Paul Gosselaar, Mario Lopez, Elizabeth Berkley, Tiffani Thiessen and Dustin Diamond.
“I really honestly believe if it did happen it wouldn't be a bad thing ,” the actress and producer said. “We tend to circumvent and come around to this topic quite often, so I think the buzz might catch.”
As for the rumors that she once dated Gosselaar?
"No, we were all that close," Voorhies said. "We just had a great chemistry and it registers very powerfully (on-screen)."

Saturday Night Live returned tonight and from the multitude of topics they had to choose from (and really, the news cycle is an embarrassment of riches where SNL is concerned) they opted for Christine O’Donnell.
In the open O’Donnell, played by Kristen Wiig, is asked about her past transgressions by members of the RNC (Jason Sudeikis and Bill Hader) who want to make sure there will be no more media surprises before they agree to fund her (it is perhaps a measure of the nation’s political savvy that SNL assumed viewers would know about her troubles with the RNC).
Suffice to say SNL is not afraid to play dirty.
After discussing the “media’s fixation” with silly things like “dabbling in witchcraft” O’Donnell reveals to the pair that back when she started her anti-masturbation campaign back in the day she didn’t even know what masturbation was…now that she does she "Masturbates" multiple times a day!
Later she assures them that there are no other skeletons in her closet…unless you count the dogs. Turns out O’Donnell used to run dog fights and they were “much better than Michael Vick’s.” And come to think of it there was also this time in college…But never fear! The people of Delaware only want to hear about restoring the Constitution and “things like that.” Indeed.
Hey hey hey, here's a news flash for you kids: Bill Cosby is not dead.
The 73-year-old comedian took to his official Twitter feed on Monday to prove he is alive – and to promote his new iPhone application.
“Again, I'm rebuttaling [sic] rumors about my demise,” Cosby wrote to the million-plus followers of his Twitter feed on Monday afternoon. “But, I'm confirming I have an app - http://bit.ly/BillCosbyApp :)”
A few hours earlier, the “Bill Cosby dead” meme flared up, with searches for that phrase peaking around noon, and “Bill Cosby died” topping Twitter’s trending topics, too.
Cosby, one rightfully-skeptical report noted, “seems to be a favorite among those who start celebrity death rumors on the Web -- the same rumor circulated back in March.”
“As you well know, a dead person cannot rebuttal,” Cosby tweeted to refute that rumor. “Therefore, I am rebuttaling to tell you that when I heard the news I immediately began rebuttaling and went into denial."
With Cosby’s app plug, though, I have a sinking feeling this latest celebrity death hoax is going to do nothing but give viral marketers some new ideas.

Likely 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney appeared on CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman" Tuesday as part of his tour to promote his new book, "No Apology: The Case for American Greatness."
Asked about potential rival Sarah Palin, Romney called her "terrific" and added, "she's got energy, passion." He then urged Letterman to "be careful what you say about her by the way," a reference to the feud between the two kicked off by Letterman's comments about Palin's daughter.
Letterman grinned and nodded, saying, "I've had my…," before trailing off as the audience began laughing.
Responded Romney: "She has a rifle, you know."
In his opening monologue, Letterman called Romney a "good looking Republican from Massachusetts," comparing him to new GOP senator Scott Brown, "but with pants."
The two men discussed cars and the auto industry, with Romney telling Letterman he drives a Ford Mustang. They also talked about Romney's father George, the former Michigan governor and auto executive.
They eventually turned to an incident in which Romney was punched on a flight departing from Vancouver last month.
"The fellow in the seat in front of my wife put his seat back during the takeoff procedure," said Romney, who said he "tapped him on the shoulder and reminded him" that the seat had to be upright for takeoff.
"He became somewhat agitated and they removed him from the airplane," Romney said. "He didn't like that, by the way, and gave me a good swat."
"And he broke my hair," Romney added, with a grin.
Later in the interview, the two men discussed the health care reform effort, with Romney saying "the problem is not the insurance companies." He said it was important to change the incentives to make health care more like a consumer market in order to control costs.
In his book, Romney criticizes President Obama for going "before so many foreign audiences to apologize for so many American misdeeds, both real and imagined."
"There are anti-American fires burning all across the globe; President Obama's words are like kindling to them," he writes, attacking Mr. Obama for "the steady stream of criticisms, put-downs, and jobs directed at the nation he was elected to represent and defend."
Romney kicked off the book tour Tuesday, appearing on ABC's "The View" and Fox News Channel's "Hannity" in addition to the "Late Show."
Sarah Palin appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" Tuesday night, where she discussed her new career in media, her opinionated nature and the sitcom "Family Guy."
