**** NY Judge: US Cannot Make Apple Provide iPhone Data

The U.S. Justice Department cannot force Apple to provide the FBI with access to locked iPhonedata in a routine Brooklyn drug case, a federal judge ruled Monday.

U.S. Magistrate Judge James Orenstein's written decision gives support to the company's position in its fight against a California judge's order that it create specialized software to help the FBI hack into an iPhone linked to the San Bernardino terrorism investigation. Apple on Thursday formally objected to the order in a brief filed with the court.

The San Bernardino County-owned iPhone 5C was used by Syed Farook, who was a health inspector. He and his wife Tashfeen Malik killed 14 people during a Dec. 2 attack that was at least partly inspired by the Islamic State group.

Apple's opposition to the government's tactics has evoked a national debate over digital privacy rights and national security.

Orenstein concluded that Apple is not obligated to assist government investigators against its will and noted that Congress has not adopted legislation that would achieve the result sought by the government.

Orenstein said he was offering no opinion on whether in the instance of this case or others, "the government's legitimate interest in ensuring that no door is too strong to resist lawful entry should prevail against the equally legitimate societal interests arrayed against it here."

He said the interests at stake go beyond expectations of privacy and include the commercial interest in conducting business free of potentially harmful government intrusion and the "far more fundamental and universal interest ... in shielding sensitive electronically stored data from the myriad harms, great and small, that unauthorized access and misuse can cause."

"How best to balance those interests is a matter of critical importance to our society, and the need for an answer becomes more pressing daily, as the tide of technological advance flows ever farther past the boundaries of what seemed possible even a few decades ago," Orenstein wrote. "But that debate must happen today, and it must take place among legislators who are equipped to consider the technological and cultural realities of a world their predecessors could not begin to conceive."

The Justice Department said in a statement that it's disappointed in the ruling and plans to appeal in coming days. It said Apple had previously agreed many times prior to assist the government and "only changed course when the government's application for assistance was made public by the court."

Apple and their attorneys said they were reading the opinion and will comment later.

In October, Orenstein invited Apple to challenge the government's use of a 227-year-old law to compel Apple to help it recover iPhone data in criminal cases, noting that another law on the books already covered the issue.

The Cupertino, California-based computer maker did, saying in court papers that extracting information from an iPhone "could threaten the trust between Apple and its customers and substantially tarnish the Apple brand."

It followed up by declining to cooperate in a dozen more instances in four states involving government requests to aid criminal probes by retrieving data from individual iPhones.

In ruling, Orenstein wrote: "I believe Apple has the better argument" because the other law covering wiretaps for telecom companies "explicitly absolves a company like Apple of any responsibility to provide the assistance the government seeks here."

Federal prosecutors say Apple has stopped short of challenging court orders judicially, except in the cases before Orenstein and the California jurist who ruled about the San Bernardino shooter's phone.

"Ultimately, the question to be answered in this matter, and in others like it across the country, is not whether the government should be able to force Apple to help it unlock a specific device; it is instead whether the All Writs Act resolves that issue and many others like it yet to come," Orenstein wrote. "For the reasons set forth above, I conclude that it does not."

The world is choosing sides in Apple’s fight with the FBI on whether the company should unlock a murderer’s iPhone.

Google

As the operator of the Android software that powers the majority of the world’s smartphones, Google is the world’s other main encrypter of phone data alongside Apple. And like Apple, it amped up measures in its software two years ago to automatically scramble information on its smartphones.

In a series of tweets, CEO Sundar Pichai called Cook’s letter about Apple’s refusal an “important post.” He noted that the court order against Apple is significantly different from the kind of access Google has previously provided for law enforcement, based on valid legal orders.

Pichai also struck a diplomatic tone, saying he was “looking forward to a thoughtful and open discussion on this important issue.”

Donald Trump

The Republican presidential candidate sided with law enforcement, calling for vigilance on security and “common sense.”

“I agree 100 percent with the courts,” Trump said on a segment with Fox News’ “Fox and Friends” Wednesday. “Who do they think they are? No, we have to open it up.”

He rejected Apple’s argument that creating the tool to unlock the shooter’s phone could jeopardize private citizens’ rights. “Apple, this is one case, this is a case that certainly we should be able to get into the phone,” he said. “And we should find out what happened, why it happened, and maybe there’s other people involved and we have to do that.”

Sen. Marco Rubio

Trump’s Republican presidential rival took a more nuanced position. He called on Apple to voluntarily abide by the court order in the interest of being “a good corporate citizen,” but he noted the complications of the standoff during an appearance on CNN.

“I don’t have a magic solution for it today. It’s a complicated new issue,” he said.

Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders

Both Democratic presidential candidates deferred from choosing sides during a Town Hall televised Thursday on MSNBC.

Sanders said Cook has seized on an important — but complicated — civil rights issue. Sanders said he’s “very fearful in America about Big Brother” and worried that granting the FBI access to private information could open the door to wider overreach, though he understood the national security concerns as well.

Clinton similarly weighed law enforcement’s desire to protect public safety with Apple’s worries. “Law enforcement has every reason to want to get information off of a killer’s cell phone,” she said, but added that it could lead to demands not just from “the United States government but the Chinese, Russian, Iranian governments.”

Facebook

The world’s biggest social network vowed to “fight aggressively” against government efforts that would weaken the security of technology products, while also acknowledging that law enforcement’s public safety mandate is “essential work,” according to a statement. It also emphasized its own stance that “those who seek to praise, promote, or plan terrorist acts have no place” on Facebook’s services, which include its massive social network, photo-sharing app Instagram and messaging service WhatsApp.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniack

Wozniak stood behind the stance of his company during an appearance on CNBC, saying Apple’s brand recognition, value and profits are based on trust. He added that Steve Jobs, the late Apple CEO, would likely have fallen on the side of protecting customers’ privacy.

John McAfee

In an op-ed for Business Insider, the anti-virus software businessman — who is known for colorful proclamations and his own tangles with law enforcement — offered to help the FBI hack the iPhone to eliminate the need for Apple to create another way in.

“With all due respect to Tim Cook and Apple, I work with a team of the best hackers on the planet,” he wrote. “I would eat my shoe… if we could not break the encryption on the San Bernardino phone.”

The task would take his team three weeks, he said. “If you accept my offer, then you will not need to ask Apple to place a back door in its product, which will be the beginning of the end of America.”

Under OBAMA'S Administration thousands of BLACK Boys & Men in CHICAGO have died via Gun Violence yet he barely mentions CHICAGO.

OBAMA mentioned three Initiatives for his new Gun Control laws.

1). To stop Straw Buyers and Straw Sellers from putting Guns into the hands of Customers who can't pass a Background Check.

2). To ensure everyone who purchases a Gun is in fact subject to a Background Check and can clear a Background Check.

3). To help people who are MENTALLY ILL.

Now let's analyze these Initiatives.

Straw Buyers & Straw Sellers will continue to make Money selling Guns. Moving forward they will just have to do it completely LEGAL.

WHITE People and Middle Eastern citizens with Criminal Records and FELONIES will continue to purchase Guns LEGALLY just as they did before OBAMA enacted new Gun Control laws.

Citizens with NO Civilian Criminal Record and NO apparent signs of MENTAL INSTABILITY/ MENTAL ILLNESS but are actually Psychological walking time bombs, will continue to LEGALLY purchase Guns and KILL innocent people once their Psychological inner time bombs explode.

President Barack Obama has been recorded crying only a handful of times while in office, and this may very well have been the most poignant.

The president took executive action on gun reform Tuesday in a move that he seemed to feel was long overdue.

When discussing the deaths of shooting victims – particularly the first-graders murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 – the president was overcome with emotion.

"Our unalienable right to life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness – those rights were stripped from college students in Blacksburg and Santa Barbara, and from high schoolers at Columbine, and from first-graders in Newtown. First-graders," he said, pausing and tearing up.

"Every time I think about those kids it gets me mad.

And, by the way, it happens on the streets of Chicago every day."

When the militants -- also known as ISIS or ISIL -- released a video Wednesday making threats against New York City, it included old footage of Times Square that had appeared in a propaganda message released in April. The New York City Police Department determined there was no credible or specific threat against the city, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said Wednesday, but he still deployed members of a new anti-terrorism squad as an extra precaution.

"The people of New York City will not be intimidated," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said late Wednesday. "We understand it is the goal of terrorists to intimidate and disrupt our democratic society. We will not submit to their wishes."

New York is wrapped in holiday cheer every December, as parents and children flock to ice skate in Bryant Park, shoppers stroll along Fifth Avenue to take in store windows dressed up for the holidays, and the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center glitters, drawing visitors and locals from around the city. The smells of roasting chestnuts fill sidewalks and churches perform traditional carols.

Tourists at Times Square and Penn Station on Thursday said they had noticed an increase in police officers at big tourist locations, and most said the increased presence made them feel safe. Lewis Moynan, a 22-year-old from England who was finishing up a trip to New York on Thursday, said he was not worried about traveling this week.

“It’s probably one of the safest times you can travel, really, with all the security,” he said. “You can see all the police presence all around the city. ... It makes you feel safer.”

After working as a soccer coach in California for several months, Moynan’s visa was nearing expiration, so he wanted to stop in New York to see the sights before heading to visit family in Maryland. While in the city, he made time to see the Empire State Building, Times Square, the Brooklyn Bridge and the World Trade Center.

“I saw this morning outside Macy’s they’ve got all the Christmas trees out and everything,” he said. “I loved it so much last year and there’s so much to do that I wanted to come back.”

Several holiday-themed events opened this week with increased police presence. The annual Union Square Holiday Market opened Thursday, and Urbanspace, the organization that runs the market, said it expects to have just as busy a holiday season as ever.

“We’re going on as usual this year, but obviously we’re cognizant of what’s going on in the world,” said Rachel Van Dolsen, a spokeswoman for Urbanspace. “The holiday market has been in New York for over 20 years, it has integrated itself into the city’s culture, it’s become an institution.”

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, New York City expects to host about 5 million visitors, according to NYC & Company, the city’s tourism organization. Those tourists will bring in more than $3 billion, which the city’s businesses and tourist attractions rely on to sustain them throughout the rest of the year.

“Cultural institutions and theaters launch new performances and blockbuster exhibits this time of year; major parades and events also add to the city’s appeal,” Dena Libner, a spokeswoman for NYC & Company said in an email. “The strength of holiday visitation is essential for the businesses and employees sustained by visitor spending.”

Hotels, too, rely on holiday visitors for big business. While most aren't expecting a drop in visitors due to the recent terror threats, some have added their own security along with Christmas wreaths and red velvet bows in recent days.

“At all Hyatt Hotels, the safety and security of guests and associates is one of our top priorities. Out of an abundance of caution, various key properties in the U.S. have elevated their security measures,” the Hyatt Corp. said in a statement. “Additionally, the hotels are in close contact with local police and are collaborating with them in their enhanced community policing measures at these locations.”

For tourists in New York City the week before Thanksgiving, many were excited to be avoiding the holiday crowds, but did say friends or relatives had warned them about traveling so soon after the Paris attacks.

Melissa Lindsay, who had just arrived at Penn Station Thursday for a girls’ weekend with her best friend of 30 years, was excited to be in New York for the first time, despite the state of world affairs. She and her friend had come from Fredericksburg, Virginia, to see Joseph Prince, the pastor of New Creation Church in Singapore, who is currently on a world tour, and they decided to make a weekend out of their trip to New York.

“I’m so excited to see ‘The Color Purple,’ ” Lindsay, 51, said. “I’m not nervous traveling, but other people did tell me to be careful going to New York. About four people said, ‘Have fun, but be careful.’ ”

A more experienced traveler, Maria Elena Wood has tried to visit New York City every year since 1981. A journalist from Santiago, Chile, she loves the New York theater scene and exploring the city. But Wood, who is 55, wasn’t going to let terrorists ruin her time in the iconic New York City.

“I think that we [cannot] be nervous because anywhere it can happen,” Wood said. “We must continue to do our lives. I think that we have to continue living as we live because that’s the best way to fight terrorism -- not to be in terror.”

~ Department of Justice Will Go After Anti-Muslim Hate Speech

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch pledged that the Department of Justice will go after hate speech that might incite violence against the Muslim community, she told a crowd of Muslim-Americans and supporters Thursday night.

“Obviously this is a country that is based on free speech,” Lynch told the audience at the Muslim Advocates dinner in Arlington, VA. “But when that edges towards violence…we will take action.”

Muslim Advocates, a legal advocacy group, asked Lynch to address concerns about an uptick in anti-Muslim rhetoric and hate crimes.

Since 9/11, Lynch says that the Department of Justice has investigated more than 11,000 acts of anti-Muslim rhetoric, which have led to 45 prosecutions. “I think sadly, that number is going to rise,” said Lynch.
Farhana Khera, Director of Muslim Advocates, told ABC News that the organization and 46 others, including the Presbyterian and American Baptist churches, sent a letter in late September to the RNC and DNC expressing concern over “divisive rhetoric being used by some presidential candidates.”

Khera said the inflammatory language towards Muslims on the campaign trail has persisted. Only the DNC responded to the letter.

In recent weeks, Donald Trump advocated for a national registry of Muslim Americans -- which he later denied -- and claimed that Muslims in New Jersey celebrated after the September 11 attacks.

“The demagoguery has to stop,” Muslim American Congressman Andre Carson (D-IN), who introduced Lynch, told ABC News. Carson said that public figures make these remarks because they “get affirmation from being provocative.”

But Lynch says that language generates fear.

“When you feel that fear, that sense of lack of control, and the inability to do something about it, you start to spin and try to find ways that you think will be the easy fix…anti-Muslim rhetoric becomes that path,” said Lynch. “We also will not give into fear.”

Imam Nidal Alsayyed of Beaumont, Texas, said the government should go even further than Trump’s
proposal and establish a ban on accepting Syrian refugees of any religion. He said that actions are necessary “when it comes to peace and safety.”

“I certainly see it to be wise (to) stop temporarily accepting any new Muslim immigrants (refugees and non-refugees) into the United States,” he said.

This “is based on the fact that we can hardly distinguish who is Muslim and who is not. Islam is not about an ID card or last name or shouting ‘Allahu Akbar,'” he added.

“It does not matter whether Trump said it or anyone else … American Muslims need to say we are with this country,” he said.

“We American Muslims need to be sincere in our religion and to the country we are living in. Peace comes before religion.”

Alsayyed elaborated on his comments via Facebook.

Southern California gunman Syed Rizwan Farook was "fixated" on Israel -- and supported ISIS' ideology of establishing an Islamic caliphate, his father says.

Farook's father talked to an Italian newspaper about his son, one of two shooters in last week's deadly attack in San Bernardino.

Along with his wife, Tashfeen Malik, Farook sprayed bullets on his co-workers at a holiday party for the environmental health department. The couple was gunned down hours later in a shootout with authorities.

Before the shooting, Farook had expressed some troubling beliefs, his father told La Stampa newspaper.

"He said he shared the ideology of al-Baghdadi to create an Islamic State, and he was fixated on Israel," the elder Farook said, referring to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The father, also named Syed Farook, recalled a time he saw his son with a gun.

"I became angry. In 45 years in the United States, I yelled: 'I have never had a weapon.' He shrugged his shoulders and replied: 'Your loss,' " the father said.

"I cannot forgive myself. Maybe if I had been at home, I would have found out and stopped him," he told the newspaper.

President speaks

As more reports emerge on the shooters' fascination with ISIS, President Barack Obama spoke to the nation Sunday night in a bid to temper growing anxiety. 

He described the attack as "an act of terrorism, designed to kill innocent people."

"The FBI is still gathering the facts about what happened in San Bernardino, but here's what we know: The victims were brutally murdered and injured by one of their co-workers and his wife," he said. 

"So far we have no evidence that the killers were directed by a terrorist organization overseas, or that they were part of a broader conspiracy here at home."

The gravity of the occasion was underscored by Obama's decision to use the symbolic power of the Oval Office for only the third time in his presidency, following addresses on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and the end of the Iraq war in 2010.

The investigation

A day before the father made news, ISIS hailed the couple as "supporters" of the terror group. The FBI has said it was treating the attack as an act of terrorism. 

The couple's motivation for the attack is a key focus for investigators.

Malik had posted to Facebook a pledge of allegiance to ISIS leader al-Baghdadi, three U.S. officials familiar with the investigation said.

But ISIS' acknowledgment of the couple as supporters doesn't mean they were members or that someone from the group ordered it, said Rick Francona, a CNN military analyst and a former intelligence officer.

ISIS, when claiming responsibility for other terrorist attacks, would call attackers "knights" or "soldiers" rather than supporters. It has, however, urged sympathizers to carry out attacks on their own.

"What they're calling these two are supporters, which is kind of a lesser level," indicating it might not have had direct contact with the couple, Francona said.

Farook looked into contacting terrorist groups overseas, such as al Qaeda affiliate al Nusra and Al-Shabaab, a senior law enforcement official said.

The source did not specify when or how those attempts were made. A working theory among investigators is that Malik was radicalized before meeting her husband. 

The source said it's too early to put a label on the attack, but at the very least, it appears the couple was inspired by ISIS and possibly other terrorist groups.

Officials caution there is still a lot to learn and there is a plethora of electronic media to review. Part of what is slowing the process down is that the couple's attempts to destroy their electronics made it challenging for investigators to exploit the material.

"They covered their tracks pretty well," the official said.

The President addressed the mass shooting in a televised speech from the Oval Office on Sunday.

President Obama has called a mass shooting in California this week an “act of terrorism.”

“This was an act of terrorism designed to kill innocent people,” the president said Sunday of the rampage that claimed 14 lives and wounded 21 others.

He spoke from a lectern in the Oval Office, flanked by framed photographs of his wife and daughters on the desk behind him.

Obama said that investigators do not believe the killers “were directed by a terrorist organization overseas or that they were part of a broader conspiracy here at home.”

“But it is clear that the two of them had gone down the dark path of radicalization, embracing a perverted interpretation of Islam that calls for war against America and the West,” he said.

This week, a husband and wife killed 14 people and wounded 21 in a shooting rampage at a meeting of the county health department at a center in San Bernardino.

The killers, Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27, died in a shootout with police hours later.

Farook worked as a health inspector at the department himself, and most of the victims were his coworkers, one of whom had shared a cubicle with Farook.

On the morning of the shooting, Malik pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in a Facebook post. Malik, a native of Pakistan, came to the United States last year to marry Farook, who was born in Illinois.

Both were devout Muslims. Farook’s coworkers said he rarely talked about his faith; Malik’s relatives in Pakistan say she grew more religious in recent years.

“As groups like ISIL grew stronger amidst the chaos of war in Iraq and Syria and as the Internet erases the distance between countries, we see growing efforts by terrorists to poison the minds of people,” Obama said Sunday.

The attack appeared to have been carefully orchestrated.

Farook and Malik wore masks and military-style vests and used assault rifles and handguns—some they had purchased legally, others they had reportedly gotten from someone else.

Investigators discovered the couple had turned part of their home into weapons stockpile.

They found thousands of rounds of ammunition, 12 completed pipe bombs, and materials to make more at their rented apartment in Redlands, less than a 15-minute drive from where the shooting occurred. Farook and Malik had smashed cellphones and deleted emails in an attempt to conceal their planning.

The FBI is investigating the attack as terrorism. The agency’s director, James Comey, said Friday the attack shows “indications of radicalization by the killers, and of potential inspiration by foreign terrorist organizations.”

Obama’s primetime speech was intended to reassure a public on edge in the wake of the Paris attacks last month, which were carried out by the Islamic State.

“I know that after so much war, many Americans are asking whether we are confronted by a cancer that has no immediate cure,” Obama said. “Well, here’s what I want you to know. The threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it.”

Obama outlined his current strategy for fighting the Islamic State, as he has done repeatedly in recent months: Launching airstrikes against targets in Iraq and Syria and helping Syrian and Iraqi Kurdish fighters on the ground.

He warned, as he has also done repeatedly in recent months, against sending Americans into combat, saying “we should not be drawn once more into a long and costly ground war in Iraq or Syria.”

The Defense Department States this month announced it would send special-operations troops to Iraq to aid local fighters, marking a public escalation in the Obama administration’s response to the terrorist group.

In the days after the San Bernardino shooting, the story developed into a wider conversation about terrorism, gun control, and even journalistic ethics.

California state lawmakers are consideringnew gun legislation.

Some Democratic members of Congress criticized their Republican counterparts for offering prayers in the aftermath of the mass shooting, and not legislative proposals for how to stop the next one.

The New York Timesran an editorial on its front page on Saturday for the first time since 1920, calling for greater regulation of guns.

~ From Housewife to Killer: The Mystery of San Bernardino Shooter Tashfeen Malik

In a crime riddled with questions, she is the leading mystery.

After masquerading for months as a newly Americanized housewife, Tashfeen Malik dropped the facade in a burst of gunfire on Wednesday, joining her husband in an attack on his office Christmas party that left 14 people dead and 21 injured.

Until that moment, Malik had maintained a low profile in her adopted homeland.

A devout Pakistan-born Muslim, she spoke broken English, wore a veil in public, avoided her neighbors and refused to drive, even after giving birth to her first child in May.

She didn't appear to be very active on social media, but just before the attack, she logged onto Facebook and posted a statement of support for ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, according to law enforcement sources.

Malik and her husband, Syed Rizwan Farook, died in a shootout with police a few hours later, leaving investigators to piece together their path from quiet suburban parenthood to one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern American history.

The FBI said neither Malik nor Farook had been on their radar.

"There is much that doesn't make sense, even for people that do this for a living," Director James Comey said Friday.

This much is known:

Malik, a Pakistani national, was from the province of Punjab but had lived with her family in Saudi Arabia for many years before returning to Pakistan to study pharmacy. She first met Farook, who was born in Illinois to Pakistani parents, online.

They agreed to meet in Saudi Arabia in 2013, when he performed the Hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca that is required of Muslims.

They married, and Farook, an introverted San Benardino County health inspector, successfully petitioned to bring her home through a visa program for foreigners engaged to American citizens.

Their California marriage license became official in August 2014, allowing Malik to become a naturalized Pakistani-American citizen.

During her year or so in America, Malik seemed to her husband's family like a "typical housewife" — albeit one with traditional Muslim ideals, the family's lawyers said.

When the relatives came over, she never showed herself to the men.

She was soft-spoken and kept to herself, but appeared to be assimilating fine, they said.

"We were barely starting to get to know her because she was quiet, and shy like [her husband]," Saira Khan, Farook's sister, told NBC News Friday.

Neighbors had a similar impression.

One described her as very quiet, averting looks whenever she passed by people, always wearing a veil.

Occasionally, she showed up at the mosque where Farook worshiped.

After she became pregnant, Malik opened an online registry at Target, but listed only four items.

The baby, a girl, arrived in May. To Farook's family, the couple seemed happy and gave no outward sign of violence or fanaticism.

But at some point, Malik and Farook began secretly plotting their deadly attack, authorities said, amassing a cache of weapons and ammunition and turning their garage into a bomb-making facility.

On Wednesday morning, authorities said, they left their daughter at home with Farook's mother, saying one of them had a doctor's appointment.

Farook went to an office party with his colleagues at the San Bernardino County Division of Environmental Health Services.

He left and returned a little later with Malik, both of them wearing masks and carrying assault-style rifles.

They mowed Farook's colleagues down, then fled, leaving behind a remote-control bomb that did not go off.

That's what investigators have been able to piece together. But there are many questions that remain unanswered. Most notably:

Had Malik and her husband become radicalized? If so, how?

"We have no indication that these killers are part of an organized larger group or form part of a cell," FBI Director James Comey said. "There's no indication that they are part of a network."

ISIS has not claimed responsibility for what the couple did, but a media organization affiliated with the group has called them "supporters."

The Farook family's lawyers said they were skeptical of any purported links to terror organizations, saying they had seen no solid evidence.

Other basic facts are also unclear. Malik's age is disputed: authorities say she was 27, but her California marriage license says she was 29.

On Friday, authorities in the United States, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia continued trying to piece together Malik's travels, and any links to terror groups.

That includes the process by which Malik was allowed to join Farook in the United States.

A State Department spokeswoman said the agency was confident in the process but did not say how or where in Pakistan Malik obtained her visa.

~ San Bernardino shooting: Several dead; police seek 1 to 3 suspects

The hunt for one to three suspects was taking place near a San Bernardino, California, center for people with developmental disabilities, where as many as 20 people were shot Wednesday, authorities said.

SWAT teams and the bomb squad were working to clear the buildings where the shootings took place.

• "There are multiple casualties and confirmed fatalities," San Bernardino Police spokeswoman Sgt. Vicki Cervantes told reporters.

• The shootings were in the conference center at the Inland Regional Center, the center's executive director, Lavinia Johnson, told CNN. She believes the county's Department of Public Health was having a holiday party there.
Johnson said the fire alarm went off in her building, and people began to evacuate but then the order came to stay in place. Later police came and took people out of their offices.

• Witnesses told police they saw three men with long guns, a law enforcement source told CNN. The source said the suspects got into a black SUV and drove away.

• The three suspects are believed to be armed with AK-47-type weapons, a local law enforcement official told CNN.

• President Barack Obama restated his call for more gun control reforms in the wake of the mass shooting. Speaking to CBS News, Obama said Congress should act in a bipartisan manner to close loopholes, including one that allows people on the TSA no-fly list to legally purchase firearms

• Four adults have been transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center, and the hospital is expecting three more patients, hospital spokeswoman Briana Pastorino said.
She did not describe the nature of the patients' wounds. Arrowhead Regional Medical Center has received eight patients, an employee who didn't want to be named told CNN.

• The bomb squad found a suspicious package on the second floor of a building and determined it is "not normal," the source said. They are going to handle it with a robot, the source added.

• A woman who works at a building where the shootings occurred texted her father: "Shooting at my work. People shot." The father told CNN affiliate KABC his daughter told him 10 to 20 people were shot.
