**** Eight injured in 'terrifying' attack at Ohio
COLUMBUS, Ohio — At least eight people were rushed to hospitals after an attack Monday on the campus of Ohio State University, authorities said.
A suspect was shot by police, and local media were reporting the suspect was killed.
"Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall.
19th and College" the university's emergency management agency tweeted shortly before 10 a.m. ET. "Run hide fight" is emergency protocol used to warn people to flee if possible, hide from the shooter and, if all else fails, fight for your life.
Later, the agency tweeted a warning to "Continue to shelter in place in north campus area. Follow directions of Police on scene."
A SWAT team, K9 and bomb squad units and scores of law enforcement officials descended on the sprawling campus. Less than two hours after the first alert, university police said the shelter-in-place order was lifted and the "scene was secure." Classes were canceled for the rest of the day.
Ben Johnson, a university spokesman, said some of the victims had been stabbed and others hit by a vehicle.
It was not clear whether the attacker used a gun.
Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center said four patients were being treated there, none with life-threatening injuries. Victims were also taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center and OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital.
Peterson Pierre, a junior biochemistry major, said he woke up to the campus alert. He and his roommate decided to go outside and see what was happening.
"We saw a body covered with a white sheet," Pierre said.
Other students hunkered down in their apartments, waiting for the threat to pass.
"It's honestly kind of terrifying because I was at home and away from my phone at the time,” said Jenny Chen, who stayed in her apartment about two blocks from Watts Hall, listed on the school's website as a Materials Science and Engineering building.
“I got flooded with messages ... asking me if I was safe and I didn't even realize this was happening,” said Chen, a senior. “Now I'm just scrambling to make sure that people I know are safe as well.”
Victoria Morishita, a senior studying logistics management student, said she was off campus, but her phone quickly loaded with texts from people near the scene.
"I was scared because it happened near our CBEC and business building and a lot of my friends were there," she said.

On today December 25th we celebrate the Birth of JESUS CHRIST.
Even though JESUS was actually born in the month of SEPTEMBER, due to the Judeo-Christian calendar we celebrate his Birthday on December 25.
We all know JESUS was a real Human Being, born in the Middle East to JEWISH parents.
As a curious Christian, I used to be caught up in Foolish arguments about JESUS' race, his Skin color, Eye color and Hair texture.
But no more!
I no longer care what Color JESUS was because such arguments keep Human Beings divided and at odds about Race Relations.
I now only care about the Truth of JESUS' Birth, his Ministry on Earth, his Crucifixion, his Resurrection and Ascension into Heaven where he now sits beside his Heavenly Father GOD Almighty.
In trying to police his depiction, Megyn Kelly is wrong on both the facts and the essential universality of the Christian message.
Fox News television host Megyn Kelly told viewers on her December 11 broadcast that Jesus and Santa are both white men.
"Just because it makes you feel uncomfortable doesn't mean it has to change," Kelly said. "Jesus was a white man, too. It's like we have, he's a historical figure that's a verifiable fact, as is Santa, I just want kids to know that. How do you revise it in the middle of the legacy in the story and change Santa from white to black?"
Setting aside the ridiculousness of creating rigidly racial depictions of a fictitious character that does not actually exist—sorry, kids—like Santa, Kelly has made a more serious error about Jesus.
The scholarly consensus is actually that Jesus was, like most first-century Jews, probably a dark-skinned man. If he were taking the red-eye flight from San Francisco to New York today, Jesus might be profiled for additional security screening by TSA.
The myth of a white Jesus is one with deep roots throughout Christian history. As early as the Middle Ages and particularly during the Renaissance, popular Western artists depicted Jesus as a white man, often with blue eyes and blondish hair.
Perhaps fueled by some Biblical verses correlating lightness with purity and righteousness and darkness with sin and evil, these images sought to craft a sterile Son of God.
The only problem was that the representations were historically inaccurate.
Modern Western Christians have carried these images over into their own depictions of Jesus. Pick up a one of those bright blue “Bible Story” books in a Sunday School classroom and you’ll find white Jesus waiting for you, rosy cheeks and all. Or you could survey the light-skinned Jesus in any number of modern TV or film portrayals, including History Channel’s hit series The Bible.
Interestingly, the Bible is far less descriptive on the matter of Jesus’ skin color than we are. Christian scriptures say very little about Jesus’ physical appearance. They do not comment on his nose, eye color, skin pigmentation, or hair.
The glaring exception is Isaiah 53:2, which prophesies that the messiah won’t be much to look at, another fact that places the Bible at odds with the “well-groomed surfer-dude Jesus” who's often put forth.
If the Bible is silent on the matter of Jesus’ skin color, does it really matter that Megyn Kelly says Jesus is white?
Yes, actually.
As some historians and theologians have posited, the silence of the Scriptures on the issue of Jesus’ skin color is critical to Christianity’s broad appeal with people of various ethnicities. In a world where race often divides communities and even churches, the Biblical depictions of God’s son positions him as one who can bridge those divides.
For this reason, one American Presbyterian minister in the 1880s warned his flock not to trust popular images of Christ:
If He were particularised and localised—if, for example, He were made a man with a pale face—then the man of the ebony face would feel that there was a greater distance between Christ and him than between Christ and his white brother.’ Instead, because the Bible refused to describe Jesus in terms of racial features, his gospel could appeal to all.
Only in this way could the Church be a place where the ‘Caucasian and Mongolian and African sit together at the Lord’s table, and we all think alike of Jesus, and we all feel that He is alike our brother’.
In Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Advice for Living” column for Ebony in 1957, the civil-rights leader was asked, “Why did God make Jesus white, when the majority of peoples in the world are non-white?” King replied, “The color of Jesus’ skin is of little or no consequence” because what made Jesus exceptional “His willingness to surrender His will to God’s will.”
His point, as historian Edward Blum has noted, is that Jesus transcends race.
Those warnings hold just as true for believers today. Within the church, eschewing a Jesus who looks more like a Scandinavian supermodel than the sinless Son of God in the scriptures is critical to maintaining a faith in which all can give praise to one who became like them in an effort to save them from sins like racism and prejudice.
It's important for Christians who want to expand the church, too, in allowing the creation of communities that are able to worship a Jesus who builds bridges rather than barriers.
And it is essential to enabling those who bear the name of Christ to look forward to that day when, according to the book of Revelation, those “from every nation, tribe, people, and language” can worship God together.
Until that day arrives, though, can someone please tell Megyn Kelly that Jesus is not white?

ISIL CAN'T STEAL AMERICA'S CHRISTMAS PLANNED TERRORIST ATTACKS RIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS.
For six years, the Radical Islamist Terrorist group ISIL, has intentionally planned Mass Shooting Attacks on American soil.
Most of these events have occurred during the Christmas holiday season.
Is it a coincidence these Terrorist attacks usually occur at Christmas time or is ISIL succeeding at distracting American citizens from celebrating the birth of JESUS CHRIST via planned Terrorist attacks?
When the militants -- also known as ISIS or ISIL -- released a video Wednesday making threats against New York City, it included old footage of Times Square that had appeared in a propaganda message released in April. The New York City Police Department determined there was no credible or specific threat against the city, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said Wednesday, but he still deployed members of a new anti-terrorism squad as an extra precaution.
"The people of New York City will not be intimidated," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said late Wednesday. "We understand it is the goal of terrorists to intimidate and disrupt our democratic society. We will not submit to their wishes."
New York is wrapped in holiday cheer every December, as parents and children flock to ice skate in Bryant Park, shoppers stroll along Fifth Avenue to take in store windows dressed up for the holidays, and the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center glitters, drawing visitors and locals from around the city. The smells of roasting chestnuts fill sidewalks and churches perform traditional carols.
Tourists at Times Square and Penn Station on Thursday said they had noticed an increase in police officers at big tourist locations, and most said the increased presence made them feel safe. Lewis Moynan, a 22-year-old from England who was finishing up a trip to New York on Thursday, said he was not worried about traveling this week.
“It’s probably one of the safest times you can travel, really, with all the security,” he said. “You can see all the police presence all around the city. ... It makes you feel safer.”
After working as a soccer coach in California for several months, Moynan’s visa was nearing expiration, so he wanted to stop in New York to see the sights before heading to visit family in Maryland. While in the city, he made time to see the Empire State Building, Times Square, the Brooklyn Bridge and the World Trade Center.
“I saw this morning outside Macy’s they’ve got all the Christmas trees out and everything,” he said. “I loved it so much last year and there’s so much to do that I wanted to come back.”
Several holiday-themed events opened this week with increased police presence. The annual Union Square Holiday Market opened Thursday, and Urbanspace, the organization that runs the market, said it expects to have just as busy a holiday season as ever.
“We’re going on as usual this year, but obviously we’re cognizant of what’s going on in the world,” said Rachel Van Dolsen, a spokeswoman for Urbanspace. “The holiday market has been in New York for over 20 years, it has integrated itself into the city’s culture, it’s become an institution.”
Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, New York City expects to host about 5 million visitors, according to NYC & Company, the city’s tourism organization. Those tourists will bring in more than $3 billion, which the city’s businesses and tourist attractions rely on to sustain them throughout the rest of the year.
“Cultural institutions and theaters launch new performances and blockbuster exhibits this time of year; major parades and events also add to the city’s appeal,” Dena Libner, a spokeswoman for NYC & Company said in an email. “The strength of holiday visitation is essential for the businesses and employees sustained by visitor spending.”
Hotels, too, rely on holiday visitors for big business. While most aren't expecting a drop in visitors due to the recent terror threats, some have added their own security along with Christmas wreaths and red velvet bows in recent days.
“At all Hyatt Hotels, the safety and security of guests and associates is one of our top priorities. Out of an abundance of caution, various key properties in the U.S. have elevated their security measures,” the Hyatt Corp. said in a statement. “Additionally, the hotels are in close contact with local police and are collaborating with them in their enhanced community policing measures at these locations.”
For tourists in New York City the week before Thanksgiving, many were excited to be avoiding the holiday crowds, but did say friends or relatives had warned them about traveling so soon after the Paris attacks.
Melissa Lindsay, who had just arrived at Penn Station Thursday for a girls’ weekend with her best friend of 30 years, was excited to be in New York for the first time, despite the state of world affairs. She and her friend had come from Fredericksburg, Virginia, to see Joseph Prince, the pastor of New Creation Church in Singapore, who is currently on a world tour, and they decided to make a weekend out of their trip to New York.
“I’m so excited to see ‘The Color Purple,’ ” Lindsay, 51, said. “I’m not nervous traveling, but other people did tell me to be careful going to New York. About four people said, ‘Have fun, but be careful.’ ”
A more experienced traveler, Maria Elena Wood has tried to visit New York City every year since 1981. A journalist from Santiago, Chile, she loves the New York theater scene and exploring the city. But Wood, who is 55, wasn’t going to let terrorists ruin her time in the iconic New York City.
“I think that we [cannot] be nervous because anywhere it can happen,” Wood said. “We must continue to do our lives. I think that we have to continue living as we live because that’s the best way to fight terrorism -- not to be in terror.”
On the last day of his Hawaiian vacation, President Barack Obama declared that he did not want to go home.
Asked during an after-hours tour of the Honolulu Zoo if he was ready to head back to Washington, Obama and his family replied in unison: "No!"
"Let's stay," first lady Michelle Obama joked to reporters. "We'll all stay. Are we all in? I'm trying to mount a coup."
The president spent some of the final hours of his 11-day trip at the zoo, on the golf course and visiting the cemetery where his grandfather is buried.
Obama's Sunday began in the way he started each of his vacation days: at the gym. Afterward, he played 18 holes on the Marine Corps Base Hawaii's Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course with his friends Marty Nesbitt of Chicago and Bobby Titcomb and Mike Ramos of Hawaii.
Obama's motorcade then headed to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl, where he spent about 10 minutes before heading over to the zoo to meet up with his wife and daughters, Sasha, 8, and Malia, 11.
Just as when they went to the movie "Avatar" and went snorkeling at Hanauma Bay and had a picnic on the beach, the first family had the zoo all to themselves as the sun set over the Waikiki tourist attraction.
Wearing a black polo shirt with dark olive slacks and sandals, Obama walked with Malia as they checked out the white-handed gibbon, ring-tailed lemur and Francois monkey, according to a pool report. The first lady walked with Sasha.
Obama returns to Washington Monday morning to face a packed agenda, after learning a lesson that numerous presidents have figured out the hard way, too: The holidays are rarely a time for total relaxation.
Last year, when Obama was president-elect, President George W. Bush was dealing with an outbreak of violence in Gaza. The year before, Pakistan was embroiled in conflict in the wake of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
During Christmas week in 1997, President Bill Clinton was in Bosnia, handling the volatile situation there, and Bush faced an international crisis the day after Christmas in 2004, when tsunamis wreaked havoc on Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India and Thailand.
As Gaza fell into violence in December 2008, Obama insisted the country had "one president at a time" — and it wasn't him just yet. But in the last two weeks, as commander in chief, Obama was forced to confront the most significant terrorism scare inside the United States in years.
He is set to hold a meeting in the Situation Room Tuesday with top national security and intelligence officials, following last month's attempted bombing of a Delta flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.
A singed pair of underwear with a packet of powder sewn into the crotch, seen in government photos obtained exclusively by ABC News, is all that remains of al Qaeda's attempt to down an American passenger plane over Detroit.
As seen in these photos, the alleged bomb consisted of a packet of powder sewn into the briefs of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian. Al Qaeda took credit Monday for the attempted bombing, boasted of its ability to overcome U.S. intelligence and airport security, and promised new attacks.
The first photo, to the left, shows the slightly charred underpants with the bomb packet still in place. All photos include a ruler to provide scale.
The bomb packet is a six-inch long container of the high-explosive chemical PETN, less than a half cup in volume, weighing about 80 grams.

A government test with 50 grams of PETN blew a hole in the side of an airliner. That
was the amount in the bomb carried by the so-called shoe bomber Richard Reid over Christmas 2001.
The underpants bomb would have been one and a half times as powerful.
Acid in Syringe Was Detonator

Tragedy was averted only because the detonator, acid in a syringe, did not work.
"It's very clear it came very, very close," said Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R.-Mich., ranking minority member of the House Intelligence Committee. "The explosive device went off, but it became an incendiary device instead of an explosive device, which is probably what saved that airplane."
The acid in the melted plastic syringe, pictured below, caused a fire but did not make proper contact with the PETN.
Abdulmutallab told FBI agents he received the bomb from and was trained by al Qaeda in Yemen over the last few months. In a web posting today, the al Qaeda group displayed a picture of Abdulmutallab, calling him a hero who "overcame legendary American intelligence which showed its fragility, putting its nose in the ground, using all of what they spent in new security techniques against them."
The al Qaeda group in Yemen has been calling for attacks against the U.S. for months.
Two of its four top leaders were U.S. prisoners at Guantanamo until November, 2007 when they were turned over to Saudi Arabia and then set free after supposedly being rehabilitated.
Now U.S. officials say these men have shown they pose a much greater operational threat than al Qaeda in Pakistan or Afghanistan.

In its statement today, the al Qaeda group said the attempt to bring down the jet was retaliation for U.S. air strikes in Yemen.
But those air strikes took place on December 17, and Abdulmutallab's mission was already underway then as he bought his ticket to Detroit on Dec. 16.
Charlie Sheen held wife Brooke Mueller down on their bed and threatened to kill her if she told anybody about his bad behavior, according to an arrest warrant affidavit released today to E! News detailing what Mueller told police after the Christmas Day incident with her husband.
Sheen became enraged when Mueller told him she wanted a divorce and would take their children away, states the report filed by responding officer Rick Magnuson of the Aspen Police Department. (Mueller talked to a female officer at the scene, who relayed her statements to Magnuson.)
When Mueller said this, Sheen straddled her on the bed and grabbed the upper part of her throat, she told police, adding that he then put a knife to her throat and said, "You better be in fear. If you tell anybody, I'll kill you."
And his alleged comments get nastier.
"Your mother's money means nothing, I have ex-police I can hire who know how to get the job done and they won't leave any trace," Sheen continued, according to Mueller.
Mueller told the police that she feared for her life and that Sheen only let her up when she apologized, telling him, "You're right, you're right, you're right. I'm sorry, I love you."
The 32-year-old mother of twins had red marks on her neck that Mueller said were caused when Sheen held her down, the report continues.
While the female cop was questioning Mueller, Magnuson was busy with Sheen, who is referred to throughout the report by his given name, Carlos Irwin Estevez.
Magnuson states that Mueller, who had called 911, was in the kitchen and Sheen was upstairs when he first arrived at their home.
Once he got ahold of Sheen, the actor told the cop that Mueller had been "abusing alcohol" and that the two had been having marital problems.
Sheen told Magnuson that Mueller was jealous of his relationship with a daughter he fathered with someone else and that their latest argument started when he "shared a song for his daughter."
Their "predominantly verbal" scuffle escalated and both slapped each other's arm during the fight, Sheen said. Mueller "irately" threatened to divorce him and take the kids, and at some point he grabbed her eyeglasses off her face and snapped them in two, the actor admitted.
Per the report, Sheen denies ever threatening his wife with a knife or strangling her.
Once he had seen the weapon, a folding knife with a 4-inch blade, and talked to Mueller, Magnuson put Sheen under arrest.
The Two and a Half Men star was booked on suspicion of menacing and second-degree assault, both felonies, as well as misdemeanor criminal mischief.
He posted $8,500 bail that night, and a routine order of protection was issued mandating that Sheen stay away from Mueller and not try to contact her.
Sheen is due in court Feb. 8 to face the rap if prosecutors opt to press charges.
In his first public statement since the attempted bombing of Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Christmas Day, President Barack Obama called the incident “a serious reminder of the dangers we face” and tried to assure Americans that they are safe while urging them to remain vigilant.
“A full investigation has been launched into this attempted act of terrorism, and we will not rest until we find all who were involved and hold them accountable,” Obama said in brief remarks at Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay, a short drive from the rented beachfront house where he is spending the holidays with his family and friends.
Obama called a 23-year-old Nigerian man’s alleged attempt to ignite explosives on the flight as it descended into Detroit Metropolitan Airport “a serious reminder of the dangers we face and the nature of those who threaten our homeland.” The suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, has claimed ties to Al Qaeda and said that he obtained the explosive device in Yemen. Less than an hour before Obama was scheduled to speak, the terrorist organization claimed responsibility for the attempted attack.
Obama did not address Al Qaeda directly but said he directed his national security team “to keep up the pressure on those who want to attack our country.”
“We do not have all the answers on this latest attempt, but those who would slaughter innocent men, women and children must know that the United States will do more than simply strengthen our defenses,” Obama said. “We will continue to use every element of our national power to disrupt, dismantle and defeat the violent extremists who threaten us — whether they are from Afghanistan or Pakistan, Yemen or Somalia, or anywhere.”
Obama said that he spoke earlier Monday with Attorney General Eric Holder, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and his Counter Terrorism adviser, John Brennan, and said that “the American people should be assured that we are doing everything in our power to keep you and your family safe and secure during this busy holiday season.”
But the president offered no new details about steps the federal government has taken, since the incident occurred Friday, to ensure that air travel is safe, and his remarks, the first he has made since the incident, came as the White House struggled to send a clear message in the aftermath of the attempted attack.
On Sunday Napolitano said that “the system worked.” But she said on Monday that her words had been taken out of context and that she was referring to what happened after the incident occurred.
“Our system did not work in this instance,” she said on NBC's "Today" show. “No one is happy or satisfied with that.”
Dressed casually in a blue jacket with no tie and taking no questions from reporters, Obama reiterated the steps the administration has taken since Friday — adding federal air marshals on flights into and out of the United States, stepping up its coordination with local law enforcement and ordering reviews of airport screening procedures and of the government’s process for compiling terrorist watch lists.
The reviews were announced after it was determined that Abdulmutallab made it through airport security with the bombing materials attached to his body and was not on a no-fly list or a larger list of individuals who are flagged to receive additional searching before they can board an airplane.
“We need to determine just how the suspect was able to bring dangerous explosives aboard an aircraft and what additional steps we need to take to thwart additional future attacks,” he said.
Obama called on Americans to remain vigilant and praised the crew and passengers aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 for subduing and restraining Abdulmutallab after he caught on fire in trying to detonate the device.
Abdulmutallab was charged Saturday with attempting to detonate explosives on the Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.
“Thanks to the quick and heroic actions of passengers and crew, the suspect was immediately subdued, the fire was put out and the plane landed safely,” Obama said. “
“The American people should remain vigilant but also remain confident. ... We will continue to do everything we can to keep America safe in the new year and beyond.”
Four days after speculation ramped up that Tiger Woods was headed toward the Bahamas, it appears that a RadarOnline.com article may still be true. UsMagazine.com reports that Woods' yacht is still docked in Palm Beach, Fla.
It is unknown if the golfer is spending Christmas on the yacht or elsewhere. Earlier this week rumors emerged that Woods and alleged mistress Rachel Uchitel were still having sex -- speculation that Uchitel's power lawyer, Gloria Allred, refused to completely deny -- but the allegations far from universally believed.
Woods is laying low for good reason. Since his post-Thanksgiving car accident, a flurry of rumors have surrounded the AP Athlete of the Decade. Pictures of Uchitel were taken in New York, and even more were snapped up once she arrived in Los Angeles. Woods allegedly emailed Uchitel about his erotic dream of her simultaneously having sex with Derek Jeter and Bones star David Boreanaz. He also is reported to have written an email saying that "I finally found someone I connect with."
Jaimee Grubbs was the second woman to be linked to Woods. Pictures and a video of the cocktail waitress soon hit the web, as did a voicemail and steamy text messages that Woods allegedly sent her. Even more texts were later released. More revealing pictures of Grubbs were soon unveiled to the public, and Grubbs eventually apologized to Woods' wife, Elin Nordegren.
Kalika Moquin was the next woman to be named, accompanied by a picture and video. Moquin has largely remained silent since the scandal was reported, unlike some of the other women connected to the golfer, including the fourth alleged mistress, Jamie Jungers.
Pictures of Jamie Jungers were not difficult to find, and the Las Vegas model may have worked as a stripper until just two weeks before she was named as someone Woods slept with. Jungers has not hesitated to pitch vodka or an auction web site. More notable were the racy allegations she floated about her relationship with Woods.
She says she and Tiger had sex the night his father died, and described the "wild" and "crazy" sex the two had together. She appeared on both the Today show and later on Dateline to spill additional details about her relationship.
Jungers' aunt says that her niece bragged about taking naked pictures of Woods while he was "passed out drunk," but Jungers denies the claim, even though three family members agree with her aunt.
Cori Rist was also linked to Woods. The New York mother allegedly received wire transfers from Tiger, according to her ex-husband. Rist later cried on the Today show and said that Woods is not "an honest man."
Mindy Lawton, a 34-year-old Florida waitress, says she had a year-long affair with Woods. She says the golfer is "very well endowed" and "knows his way around the bedroom."
Holly Sampson was the first porn star to be linked to Woods. NSFW pictures of the adult actress soon appeared, as did a video of the porn star describing sex with Woods, which she calls "amazing." Sampson bears a striking resemblance to a Los Angeles escort with the same name, and she went on to call her time with Woods a "sensual, beautiful experience."
Sampson is not the only porn star rumored to have slept with Woods. Joslyn James has also been named in connection with Tiger, and video of her dancing while barely clothed is available online. James is also on a most-wanted list in Washington state for failing to make child support payments.
Playboy model Loredane Jolie is another alleged mistress, as is former Floridian and current Texan Julie Postle, a striking blonde who was recently pictured in a bikini.
The most recent woman linked to Woods is also the oldest. 48-year-old "cougar" Theresa Rogers allegedly "taught Woods everything he needed to know to be a great lover" and reportedly had an affair that occurred both before and after he married Elin Nordegren.
Tiger allegedly told Rogers that he only married Nordegren to boost his image, and the older lover reportedly tried to have Tiger's baby without his knowledge. Rogers is rumored to be securing a secret payment to ensure her silence.
Residents across the Midwest and the Plains who made it home for Christmas were digging out on Friday after a fierce snowstorm while those who spent the night in airports and shelters tried to resume their journeys. Meteorologists warned that roads across the region remained dangerous.
The National Weather Service said blizzards would hit parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin through Saturday. The storm had already dumped significant snow across the region, including a record 14 inches in Oklahoma City and 11 inches in Duluth, Minn., on Thursday.
Slippery roads have been blamed for at least 21 deaths this week as the storm lumbered across the country from the Southwest. Ice storm warnings and winter weather advisories were issued for parts of the East Coast on Friday, but the region was largely spared.
Paul Mews, who drove from Faribault, Minn., to a relative's home in Plum City, Wis., on Friday morning, said the first 15 minutes of the 80-mile trip were clear, but a surge of heavy snowfall produced a stretch of near-whiteout conditions.
"It was snow-pocalypse. It was wicked," said Mews, 25. "We thought about turning around and going back."
They decided to continue when the surge passed minutes later.
Christmas in the truck stop
Others weren't as lucky.
Army Sgt. Mark Matthey was spending Friday night at the Flying J Travel Plaza in Sioux Falls, S.D., after Interstate 90 closed. Matthey, 26, left Fort Bragg, N.C., on Wednesday for his hometown of Spokane, Wash., in hopes of making it by late Friday or early Saturday.
Instead, he spent Friday afternoon drinking coffee, watching TV and making friends at the truck stop. He planned to find a spot to sleep on the floor or in the cab of his truck.
Matthey said he and the other travelers were in decent spirits.
"Everybody has the attitude that you have to play the cards you were dealt," he said. "No use in getting upset about something you can't control."
Interstates also were closed in North Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming. Meteorologists warned that massive snow drifts and blustery winds could cause whiteouts across the northern Plains. Officials urged travelers to stay home and pack emergency kits if they had to set out.
Rescues along Texas highways
In Texas, volunteer firefighters and sheriff's deputies rescued hundreds of people stranded along Interstate 44 and Texas State Highway 287 near Wichita Falls. The area recorded up to 13 inches of snow, said Doug Speheger, a National Weather Service meteorologist.
"It's really been horrible," Wichita County Sheriff David Duke said. "Although we live in North Texas and get a lot of cold weather, we weren't prepared for the significant amount of snow that we've received."
Only two of the sheriff department's vehicles have four-wheel drive, so rescuers used their own pickups and the heavy 5-ton brush trucks normally used to fight fires to get to motorists, many of whom ran out of gas while they were stuck in traffic stalled by the storm.
"It was exciting at first to wake up and go, 'Oh, this will be great. We'll have a white Christmas,'" Wichita Falls Mayor Lanham Lyne said. "Then it kept snowing. As the roads became impassable, then we started to worry."
Even residents in the Dallas-Fort Worth area briefly experienced a white Christmas, their first in more than 80 years. Not since Dec. 25, 1926 — when 6 inches fell on Dallas and Collin counties — had the area had a true postcard-looking Christmas.
But by late afternoon, the 3 inches of snow measured at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport on Christmas Eve was all but melted.
Winds were gusting from 45 mph to 60 mph across the Dakotas and Nebraska on Friday. Crews were working to restore power to thousands of customers in Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois and Iowa.
The storm also grounded flights at South Dakota's biggest airports. Sioux Falls Regional Airport was closed until Saturday morning at the earliest, manager Dan Letellier told the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. Flights also were canceled at Rapid City Regional Airport and Pierre Regional Airport. The total number of flights affected wasn't immediately available.
About 200 people were stuck overnight at Oklahoma's largest airport, which closed Thursday afternoon after several inches of snow clogged runways, said Mark Kranenburg, director of the Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City. The airport reopened Friday morning, but only one runway was operational.
Most of the stranded passengers were gone by Friday afternoon. While some were able to catch flights, many simply went home. Kranenburg predicted it would be two or three days before all three runways were open and flights resumed as scheduled.
The 14 inches of snow in Oklahoma City broke a record for the day of 2.5 inches set back in 1914.
The previous record for Christmas Eve in Duluth, which has gotten more than 22 inches in two days, was 3 inches in 1893, said Kevin Kraujalis, a National Weather Service meteorologist. By the time the storm is over, it could be one of the 10 worst in Duluth's recorded history.
With heavy winds producing snow drifts as deep as 5 feet, "it's awful, it's just awful," Kraujalis said. "It's a big workout just walking outside to check my weather equipment."
Since Tuesday, icy roads have been blamed for accidents that killed at least seven people in Nebraska, five people in Oklahoma, four in Kansas, two in Minnesota and one each in North Dakota, Missouri and New Mexico.
Congressional lawmakers are calling the attempted terrorist attack at a Detroit airport "disturbing" and "extremely serious," with at least one senator pledging to hold hearings, as authorities moved to increase security in response at U.S. airports over the Christmas weekend.

An airline passenger, who claimed to have ties to Al Qaeda, was subdued Friday after he tried to ignite a powdery substance just before landing in Detroit, sources told FOX News.
The White House and lawmakers are calling it an attempted act of terrorism.
The passenger, one of 278 passengers flying from Amsterdam to Detroit, is now in custody, according to a statement from the Transportation Security Administration.
Reflecting the severity of the incident, a number of lawmakers were tracked down on Christmas Day to be briefed on the incident. House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., House Minority Leader John Boehner and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, were among them.
Collins, ranking Republican on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, released a written statement questioning how the passenger was allowed on board and what the TSA can do to prevent such an incident from re-occurring.
"It is troubling that he was apparently able to bring explosive material on the airplane," she said. "This incident is a disturbing reminder that the terrorist threat is still very real and that we must continue to be vigilant and alert. It also raises some serious questions."
Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, said his panel would hold hearings come January.
"Any terrorist attempt on our citizens is extremely serious," he said.
Officials have identified the suspect as 23-year-old Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab of Nigeria. The suspect claimed extremist ties during questioning, said one source.
One official also said he was a student at University College London.
King, the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, said Mutallab "definitely has connections" to Al Qaeda.
King said Mutallab was not on any "no-fly list," but one source familiar with the investigation said the suspect did come up in another federal database after authorities checked his name on Friday.
"This could have been catastrophic," King told Fox News. "We were lucky on this one." King said there is no evidence that this was part of a larger plot.
FBI and Department of Homeland Security officials would not discuss the suspect's possible motives. However, DHS and the FBI have since issued a "situational awareness bulletin" to state and local law enforcement across the country, and to the airline industry, one source said.
DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano and President Obama have been briefed on the situation, according to spokespeople for both.
"Passengers may notice additional screening measures put into place to ensure the safety of the traveling public on domestic and international flights," DHS spokeswoman Sara Kuban said in a statement. "As always we encourage the traveling public to be observant and aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior or activity to law enforcement officials."
According to a TSA official, these additional measures could include bomb-sniffing dogs, gate screening, behavior detection and other precautions.
After being notified of the incident by a military aide, Obama, vacationing in Hawaii with his family, convened a conference call with his counterterrorism chief, John Brennan, and other national security officials, a White House spokesman said.
"(He) instructed that all appropriate measures be taken to increase security for air travel," White House spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement. "The president is actively monitoring the situation and receiving regular updates."
Northwest Flight 253 was close to touching down at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport when it declared an emergency on board, an airline official said.
King said Mutallab tried to set off "a fairly sophisticated device," and Mutallab was "seriously injured." Some other passengers suffered minor injuries, an airline official said.
King said the device "appears to be different from what we've encountered before" and therefore may not have been detected by airport screeners.
A source familiar with the FBI investigation said the device was affixed to the suspect's leg, and it was to be detonated with a syringe.
King said Mutallab boarded a plane in Nigeria and connected in Amsterdam on his way to Detroit.
Flight 253 was scheduled to arrive in Detroit at 11:40 a.m., but arrived shortly after noon, according to Northwest's web site.
The aircraft was "deplaned" and "out of an abundance of caution, the plane was moved to a remote area where the plane and all baggage (were) ... rescreened," the TSA said.
