BP (NYSE:BP) has released footage of their remote operating vehicle (ROV) successfully capping one of the three leaks that is pouring an estimated 5,000 barrels of oil a day into the waters off the Gulf of Mexico.
This is the first video I've seen of the oil leak itself . The sheer volume of oil gushing out is quite incredible - you can see it at about the 2 minute 15 second mark of the video.
The ROV used a robotic arm to cap the leak, which did not reduce the total volume of the oil leak, but according to officials makes the task of capping the other two leaks much easier. Time is getting short for BP as reports are coming out this afternoon that oil has begun to wash up on the shores of a major Louisiana wildlife refuge.
President Barack Obama joined the rest of the nation in mourning Dorothy Height.
The President welcomed Dorothy Height to the Roosevelt Room of the White House for a meeting on Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year:
"Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Dorothy Height - the godmother of the Civil Rights Movement and a hero to so many Americans.
Ever since she was denied entrance to college because the incoming class had already met its quota of two African American women, Dr. Height devoted her life to those struggling for equality. She led the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years, and served as the only woman at the highest level of the Civil Rights Movement - witnessing every march and milestone along the way.
And even in the final weeks of her life – a time when anyone else would have enjoyed their well-earned rest – Dr. Height continued her fight to make our nation a more open and inclusive place for people of every race, gender, background and faith.
Michelle and I offer our condolences to all those who knew and loved Dr. Height – and all those whose lives she touched".
President Barack Obama is pushing his administration's plans to create jobs, a crucial campaign issue for Democrats as they look toward November's midterm elections.
Obama planned remarks Friday at a North Carolina company, Celgard that has hired new workers and expanded its operations with grants from the economic stimulus program. Obama's team wants to marry much-needed job creation with the politically sour stimulus, hoping that will help Democrats gain favor with voters after a bruising, yearlong battle with Republicans over health care.
Before Obama left for Charlotte, the Labor Department reported that employment improved significantly in March, with businesses adding 162,000 jobs to their payrolls. But the improving economy was only strong enough to accommodate the tens of thousands of workers who flocked into the labor force. Thus, the overall unemployment rate remained unchanged at 9.7 percent.
White House economist Christina Romer said in a statement that while Friday's jobs report showed signs of a gradual economic recovery, the American labor market remains "severely distressed." Romer said Americans should expect the unemployment rate to remain volatile, and warned of bumps in the road ahead.
Republicans have created a steady drumbeat of criticism of Obama's stewardship of the economy and against his health care victory in the hopes voters blame Obama at the ballot box in November.
"If President Obama were serious about job creation, he would be spending less time on the campaign stump trying to sell Americans on a health care bill they don't like and can't afford and more time focusing on putting our nation back to work," Republican National Committee spokeswoman Katie Wright said.
Between now and November, Democrats are looking to illustrate their economic accomplishments. The White House said Obama on Friday would point to the Charlotte company, Celgard LLC, an advanced battery technology manufacturer, as an example of the economic progress made since he took office and again call on Congress to act on job-creating proposals.
Obama has pushed Congress to use $30 billion that had been set aside to bail out Wall Street to start a new program that provides loans to small businesses, which the White House calls the engine for job growth.
Last month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported no change in the overall unemployment rate, which stood at 9.7 percent. It had dropped 0.3 percent, from 10 percent to 9.7 percent, in January. That had been the first drop in seven months but offered little consolation for the 8.4 million jobs that have vanished since the recession began.
On Thursday, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on NBC that administration officials were "very worried" about recovering the jobs lost in the recession. But he noted that business growth has been improving and he expected the economy to start creating jobs again.
More than 11 million people now are drawing unemployment insurance benefits, and the overall jobless rate of 9.7 percent understates the true level of economic misery because many people who have given up looking for work are no longer in the official count of the unemployed.
A report Thursday said initial claims for unemployment benefits fell slightly last week as the recovering economy moves closer to generating more jobs. The Labor Department said new jobless benefit claims dropped 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 439,000, nearly matching analysts' estimates. It was the fourth drop in five weeks.
With House Democratic leaders confident they have the 216 votes needed to pass a historic vote Sunday on sweeping health care reform, Republicans were focused on the 20 Democrats who were still uncommitted late Saturday and could derail the legislation.
But that number began to fall Sunday with Rep. Brian Baird, D-Wash., becoming the latest Democrat to switch to a "yes" vote.
Yet House Republican leader John Boehner said Sunday that Democrats have yet to lock in enough votes. The Ohio Republican told NBC's "Meet the Press" that the plan is a government takeover opposed by the vast majority of Americans.
President Obama was spending Sunday in the West Wing making and taking calls with lawmakers as Democrats worked to lock down votes on the bill.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Connecticut Rep. John Larson, chairman of the Democratic caucus in the House, said their party has the votes needed to pass the bill but acknowledged they have yet to nail down commitments from a handful of members.
"There are still members looking at it and trying to make up their minds," Hoyer said on "Meet the Press" in the hours before the vote. He added that the holdouts numbered in "the low single digits."
"We think there are going to be 216-plus votes when we call the roll," Hoyer said.
Larson stopped just short of declaring victory.
"We have the votes now -- as we speak," Larson, D-Conn., said on ABC's "This Week."
But Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., the party's deputy whip, said the votes were not yet in hand, telling "Fox News Sunday" that Democrats were still short of "a hard 216."
House leaders continued to negotiate late Saturday with a handful of anti-abortion Democrats who threatened to switch from "yes" to "no" on the legislation without greater assurances that no federal money under the new laws would be used for elective abortions.
It was unclear whether Obama would agree to issue an executive order along those lines. Long-standing federal policy bars U.S. aid for abortions except in cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is in danger.
Another snag involved widespread distrust among House members that the Senate would be able to pass the "fixes" to the bill. Clyburn's Senate counterpart, Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, said on CBS' "Face the Nation" that he has commitments of support from at least a majority of the 100-member chamber, but Democratic leaders have not released a list of supporters.
The last-minute holdups gave the House vote scheduled Sunday a measure of suspense.
Republicans attributed the caution to public controversy over the plan, which played out in angry protests at the doorstep of the Capitol during Congress' rare weekend session.
Republicans remain resolutely opposed to the legislation and warned they will make Democrats pay dearly in the fall elections if the fiercely debated measure becomes law.
"The American people don't want this to pass. The Republicans don't want this to pass. There will be no Republican votes for this bill," Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, the House's second-ranking Republican, told ABC.
With President Obama's emotional appeal from Saturday ringing in their ears, House Democratic leaders prepared for three showdown votes Sunday: on a "rule" to establish debate guidelines; on a package of changes to a Senate-passed bill, including deletion of special Medicaid benefits for Nebraska; and on the Senate bill itself, the focus of intense national debate for months.
If Democratic leaders prevail on all three House votes, Obama could sign the Senate version of the bill into law. The bill of "fixes" would go to the Senate under fast-track debate rules that would enable Democrats to pass it without facing a Republican filibuster.
Democrats control 59 of the Senate's 100 seats, one vote shy of the number needed to overcome bill-killing filibusters from a united GOP.
House Democrats have long insisted that senators agree to change the bill that the Senate passed on Christmas Eve. Since then, it became deeply unpopular with many Americans, because of the special deal for Nebraska, a new tax on generous employer-provided health plans and other aspects.
In a sign of increasing Democratic confidence Saturday, House leaders dropped plans for a controversial parliamentary tactic. They agreed to allow a simple yes-or-no vote on the Senate bill. By planning to pass the package of fixes on the same day, Democrats hope they can persuade constituents they did not support the Senate measure as a stand-alone bill.
The legislation, affecting virtually every American and more than a year in the making, would extend coverage to an estimated 32 million uninsured, bar insurers from denying coverage on the basis of existing medical conditions and cut federal deficits by an estimated $138 billion over a decade.
Congressional analysts estimate the cost of the two bills combined would be $940 billion over a decade.
Obama along with his Vice-President Joe Biden, won the general election with 365 Electoral Votes beating their opponents John McCain and Sarah Palin by at least 95 more votes than the 270 necessary to step into the Oval office.
Millions have decided to brave the Cold weather for the opportunity to personally witness such a Magnificent event in History.
No doubt Obama's Inauguration represents a milestone once unimaginable in a nation still plagued with racial issues since its founding and where segregation is still being practiced in many Southern states, especially within their Public School systems.
His election also pays homage to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a slain Civil Rights Leader most famous for his "I Have a Dream" speech given at the Lincoln Memorial during the Civil Rights March on Washington, DC August 28, 1963.
The swearing in ceremony took place right outside the U.S. Capitol, with the use of Lincoln's bible.
After repeating this Oath he will step into history as did his predecessors:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."
The President and new first lady are expected to stroll down Pennsylvania Avenue as a gesture of thanks to his constituents.
