Michael Brown will be buried today.

It will be a solemn end to a brutal month that should have never happened.

The people of St. Louis County have endured a long, hot August punctuated by protests, riots, looting and streets that looked more like Fallujah than Ferguson.

It has all put the issues of race and police brutality up for debate across America and the world.

The generals of Egypt and the ayatollahs of Iran have joined a chorus of dictators who have seized on the grim images of August to condemn our country.

But there’s no need to concern ourselves with lectures coming from tyrants. Instead, now is the time for us to start asking how this altercation spiraled out of control and became an international incident.

No one knows whether the shooting of Michael Brown was justified.

Forensic evidence should give us a better idea of what happened on that fateful afternoon. But we can already pass judgment on the negligent response of local officials to the teenager’s death.

The first ingredient in this toxic brew was a police force that was radically different from the people they were paid to serve and protect.

It’s hard to practice what experts call community policing when your force looks nothing like the community they patrol.

New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton has been a champion of community policing. It is a strategy designed to get the community invested in keeping city streets safe.

The choke-hold death of Eric Gardner shows that New York cops aren’t perfect, but the bank of trust that Bratton’s approach has built up keeps New York’s protests over the killing peaceful.

As the Rev. Al Sharpton said while calling for peace at the New York rally, “We are not against the police.” That’s because many come from the same communities they are policing.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for Ferguson residents. In a town that is overwhelmingly black, the Ferguson police force of 53 has 50 white cops on the streets.

That’s an ethnic breakdown that’s more reminiscent of apartheid governments from South Africa’s grim past than community policing in today’s America.

And while many are quietly criticizing the welfare culture that they claim has led to the collapse of this troubled Missouri town, these armchair sociologists should be just as concerned with a police culture in Ferguson that is unrepresentative and isolated from the very people they should protect and serve.

A second cause of the Ferguson tragedy was the callous treatment of Michael Brown’s body after the shooting.

Policing experts suggest that officers gather evidence quickly and get a body off the street as quickly as possible. Former NYPD Detective Sgt. John Paolucci said police should conduct very little examination of the body at the scene other than photographing it.

Then, out of respect to the deceased and his community, the body should quickly be removed.

But Michael Brown’s body was left in the middle of a street in sweltering heat for over four hours. Parents had to rush their children away from the area and keep them hidden in rooms with windows facing away from the grisly scene.

As Bloomberg’s John Heilemann said today on ‘Morning Joe,’ it’s inconceivable to believe such a delay would have happened had a black cop shot a middle-class white teenage boy in his affluent hometown.

Rand Paul has declared there to be two different Americas when it comes to criminal justice. This should not be an opinion open to debate.

It is a fact provable by objective evidence. Anyone still denying that reality in 2014 has their head stuck in the sand — or worse.

The third ingredient to this toxic brew is the hyper-militarized nature of the Ferguson police department’s initial response.

Republicans Rand Paul, Ted Cruz and Erick Erickson condemned Ferguson’s militarized tanks, assault rifles and other war-ready equipment shipped from Washington with very little training and fewer strings attached.

The militarization of local police departments is a trend so troubling that Red State’s Erickson wrote that conservatives should not wait for a white teenager to get killed under such circumstances before they demand change.

For law enforcement officials worried about an overreaction to the events of this August, they must understand that if D.C. bureaucrats are going to ship out high-grade military equipment to small-town cops, tough guidelines and rigorous training have to be a part of the deal.

The problem is not with each and every police officer in towns like Ferguson.

The problem is cultural and these weapons demand an intense, disciplined training program to make sure we never repeat these same mistakes again.

How do we make sure this never happens again? You start with community policing — a force that represents the people they are supposed to protect.

Then we need a tough, long look at the militarization of local police departments. And finally, it is past time to put cameras on cops. As I said at the beginning of this crisis, these cameras would protect citizens, protect good cops and provide evidence that would let us know in real time what happened in cases like Michael Brown’s.

The only people hurt by putting cameras on cops are bad cops.

And we need them the hell out of the police force anyway to make sure we don’t endure a month like the one that just passed.

ARTICLE: "On Rooftops of Ferguson, Volunteers Patrol, With Guns"

FERGUSON, Mo. — When Sam Andrews awoke on Tuesday morning, he found his wife watching a television interview with a woman whose bakery had been vandalized during the violent unrest here on Monday.

“She said, ‘You’ve got to go help her,’ ” Mr. Andrews said in an interview on Saturday morning.

And so Mr. Andrews, a former Defense Department contractor who is now a weapons engineer in the St. Louis area, set to work. Under the auspices of a national group called the Oath Keepers, Mr. Andrews accelerated plans to recruit and organize private security details for businesses in Ferguson, which are receiving the services for free. The volunteers, who are sometimes described as a citizen militia — but do not call themselves that — have taken up armed positions on rooftops here on recent nights.

“It’s really a broad group of citizens, and I’m sure their motivations are all different,” said Mr. Andrews, who is in his 50s. “In many of them, there’s probably a sense of patriotism. But I think in most of them, there’s probably something that they probably don’t even recognize: that we have a moral obligation to protect the weakest among us. When we see these violent people, these arsonists and anarchists, attacking, it just pokes at you in a deep place.”

Mr. Andrews declined to say how many people were assisting in the effort, saying only that the number was “more than five, less than 500.” He estimated that men make up about 80 percent of the volunteers. About 80 percent are white, and 10 percent are black.

But on Saturday, with the county police said to be threatening the Oath Keepers with arrest, the volunteers decided to abandon their posts and instead protest against the authorities. During the evening, Mr. Andrews and some of his colleagues appeared on South Florissant Road, conducting a protest of their own. They ate pizza and stood beneath a handmade sign critical of Chief Jon Belmar of the St. Louis County police.

Just after 8:30 p.m., those protesting Mr. Brown’s death crossed paths with the Oath Keepers. Mr. Andrews shook hands with the demonstrators, many of whom have also been critical of Chief Belmar.

That some business owners accepted aid from a group regarded by some as an antigovernment militia is a testament to the rawness of emotions here following a riot on Monday night, after a grand jury declined to indict a white police officer, Darren Wilson, who shot to death Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, on Aug. 9.

Since then, the riot police have tussled on the streets with protesters. Convoys of National Guard Humvees patrol the streets, and law enforcement officials have confiscated guns, firecrackers and homemade firebombs from arrested protesters. The Oath Keepers, equipped with militia-style gear and often clad in camouflage, have joined the volatile mix.

Their presence is a symbol of the continuing criticism of Gov. Jay Nixon’s handling of security before and after the grand jury’s decision became public. In the days before the announcement, Mr. Nixon declared a state of emergency and sent the Guard to Ferguson. Yet, in the initial hours following word of the grand jury’s decision, the Guard played only a limited role.

Troops protected a police command post and other facilities, but they were not posted along the main commercial corridors where property destruction was rampant.

“The governor said himself, I think on TV, that the businesses will be protected by the National Guard during this situation,” said Reggie Jones, the mayor of Dellwood, a neighboring city where many businesses were damaged in Monday’s unrest. “Unfortunately, that did not happen until Tuesday. But we were expecting it to happen on Monday.”

After the destruction that night, Mr. Nixon ordered hundreds more soldiers to Ferguson, saying, “We must do better, and we will.”

But for people like Mr. Andrews, the governor’s vow was of little solace. So while the New Chinese Gourmet restaurant at the end of a block of South Florissant Road appears to have little in the way of defense beyond the painted wooden boards that cover its windows, armed men and women on recent nights have roamed the rooftop it shares with a dental practice and a law office.

“When they’re here, there’s definitely a weight lifted off of our shoulders,” said Davis Vo, whose family owns New Chinese Gourmet. “I’d be lying if I said otherwise.”

On its website, Oath Keepers released a recruiting message to “all skilled veterans and patriots” and asked them to “grab your gear and start rolling toward Ferguson.” The post listed nine types of people the group was seeking, including paramedics, police officers, “private drone operators” and videographers who could “film any encounters with looters.”

Mr. Andrews said he researched the qualifications of each volunteer, as well as whether any might have racially based motivations to participate.

“I don’t want any racists in my group,” he said. “I don’t want any people who want to visit violence on any group. I only want professionals with real credentials that can be verified and have experience in dealing with violence.”

But the St. Louis County police, Mr. Andrews said, and other law enforcement officials have expressed misgivings.

“When we hear information that someone, or a group, is providing security without a license, our department has to investigate the issue,” a police spokesman, Shawn McGuire, said in an email on Saturday.

Mr. Andrews said that the warning on Friday was tantamount to a temporary shutdown order, and he said he did not expect his volunteers to defy it.

Washington (AFP) - The Missouri police officer who killed an unarmed black teen sparking months of protests in the city of Ferguson will never return to policing, his lawyer said.

Darren Wilson is currently in discussions with the Ferguson, Missouri police department on the terms and conditions of his departure, attorney Neil Bruntrager said this week.

"There's no way in the world he can go back to being a police officer," the lawyer said.

"It's not a question of if, it's a question of when," Bruntrager said of Wilson's departure.

Wilson shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown in August claiming he acted in self-defense.

The shooting set off days of racially-charged protests that erupted again this week after a grand jury on Monday announced that Wilson would not be charged over the fatal shooting.

Bruntrager told CNN that Wilson, who has said his conscience is clear, could simply not go back to work given the outrage over the case.

"The first day he would be back on the street something terrible would happen to him or to someone that would be working with him," he told CNN.

"The last thing he wants is to put other police officers at risk," the attorney added.

Anonymous, the online hacker group, is said to have recently released a mass of highly secret details and information regarding Ku Klux Klan members.

According to Anonymous, there is a definite connection between some police officers of Ferguson and members of the KKK, and that Darren Wilson himself might be involved with the organization.

With violent protests still continuing in Missouri this week, the KKK in Ferguson would only make racial strains more heated at this point in time.

Now the online Internet hackers of Anonymous are saying they have released data on Ku Klux Klan members that have a distinct “link” to Ferguson police force authorities.

The group alleges that they have been able to infiltrate the main Twitter account of the KKK, known as @KuKluxKlanUSA.

Having the Twitter account now rumored to be under the hacker’s control, Anonymous has threatened to reveal a number of hidden details with the US public.

The press release notes that this seizure of the social media site is part of a continued “clash” between the pair of groups regarding the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown and Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson’s shooting of the unarmed teen.

It appears that Anonymous says they have discovered a tie between Ferguson police officers and KKK members.

This is, at least, what the group is claiming this Wednesday afternoon.

An alleged video was leaked last week saying that a set of well-known members of the Ku Klux Klan within the Missouri state branch of the organization were in support of officer Darren Wilson.

The sect is called the Traditionalist American Knights of the KKK, and were reported to have been in attendance for a private rally backing the white policeman over the black teen.

According to Web Pro News on the KKK in Ferguson story, the members of the St. Louis suburb who secretly participate in the Klan are allegedly called the “Ghoul Squad.”

Now, the Anonymous hackers are questioning whether Wilson himself may be a part of the underground community.

The group has also alleged to “list every Klan member” within Ferguson and has reportedly spurred an “OperationKKK” crusade based on the leaked details.

They say the Ku Klux Klan has already begun to share intimidating notices of “lethal force” that may be used toward active protestors of the Ferguson shooting.

The case gets more complicated after Anonymous revealed an unidentified insider provided concrete proof of ties regarding police officer Darren Wilson and the KKK.

However, details of this breaking news are allegedly being kept hidden by the hackers at this time because to share this information would result in his life being in “immediate danger.”

“I know for a fact that the TAKKKK had a lot to do with what went on in Ferguson.” ex-member of the TAKKKK, Henry Harrell, told Anonymous.

Apparently, there was a so-called “mole” within Ferguson’s law enforcement force that has been working with the hackers group to bring the identities of the Ku Klux members into the limelight.

An unknown activist, who goes by “Kafir,” said that the NOWsec independent journalism website has inner connections and details on the matter.

Darren Wilson, the Ferguson police officer who was not indicted this week by a Missouri grand jury, has said that he has been brought into a wrong and negative perspective over the shooting of Michael Brown.

The cop claims he was defending himself from a large 18-year-old who was the one who initiated the attack.

**Incident was just six months before death of Michael Brown and was followed by bitter ongoing custody dispute between wife and her older ex.

**Wilson was still married to his first wife during the incident, which resulted in ex being convicted of three misdemeanors.

**Grand jury was not told about his turbulent home life while they decided on his actions in shooting Michael Brown.

Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson was involved in a violent altercation with the father of his lover’s child that saw assault charges brought in a case closed just six months before the Missouri cop shot dead Michael Brown.

Ferguson erupted as protesters reacted angrily to news of the Grand Jury’s decision not to indict the officer for the fatal shooting.

Wilson, 28, had been in hiding since August 9 when he pumped six bullets into the unarmed teen until the day after the verdict, when was interviewed by ABC News..

While the Grand Jury considered the evidence, Brown’s family waited for answers and protesters seethed with anger, Wilson married his lover, fellow Ferguson officer, Barbara Spradling, in a secret ceremony in St Louis County.

The couple are now expecting their first child together.

Now, court documents seen by MailOnline have revealed the turbulent history of the relationship that ended two marriages, sparked an ongoing custody battle and saw Wilson and Spradling, 37, embroiled in the assault case with her former lover, John Blumenthal, 52.


Papers filed at Jefferson County Court expose the true extent of Wilson’s disrupted home-life and show the volatile backdrop against which the officer undertook his life of public service.

They reveal pressures of which the Grand Jury was unaware as they considered the Wilson’s state of mind when he pulled the trigger on August 9 and discharged 12 rounds. Six bullets hit home, felling the 6ft 2 teenager.

According to court records, on 16 May 2013 John Blumenthal returned home around midnight to find Wilson - 24 years his junior - on the sofa with the mother of his child in the house that he and Barbara Spradling still shared.

The couple’s then four-year-old child was asleep in bed when a violent confrontation took place.

In her account Spradling stated that Blumenthal, who worked for Neihaus Construction, was ‘depressed over losing his job.’

She said that he stated ‘he wanted to kill himself [and] that he was not coming home ever again.’

But Blumenthal did come home. Spradling said, ‘My boyfriend [Wilson] and I were sitting on the couch when we heard banging on the garage and front door.’

Spradling let Blumenthal in and, she stated, ‘He immediately became aggressive and started hitting my boyfriend with a pillow as hard as he could. John then tried punching him several times.’

Spradling then recounted that her former partner, ‘Pulled my hair out of my head, choked me, punched me in the face and hit me in the face with his shoe. He continued to pull my hair several times.’

Assault charges leveled against Blumenthal were dismissed in August last year after he pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor charges.

Documents filed at Hillsboro, Missouri’s Jefferson County Court on July 1 2013 detail the grim events of the midnight brawl between Blumenthal, the mother of his child and her lover and colleague Wilson.

Blumenthal pleaded guilty to two counts of disturbance of the peace and one of destruction of property.

In his probable cause statement Wilson ‘advised that the defendant attempted to strike him several times with a closed fist, as well as placed him in a headlock, causing abrasions to his face and chest.

‘The victim further stated that the defendant kicked his vehicle, causing a dent which would cost approximately five hundred dollars to fix.’

To add a further layer of complexity to Wilson’s fraught domestic background, he was still married to his first wife, Ashley Brown, 30, at the time the incident took place, although the couple had separated three months earlier.

Divorce papers finalized on 18 November 2013, after just 16 months of marriage, state that the union was ‘irretrievably broken.’ Contrary to previous reports they did not have children together and Ms Brown was not pregnant at the time of their split.

Documents filed in the County of St Charles and St Louis show that Wilson and Brown married on October 15 2011 when he was 25 and she was 21.

At the time Brown is described as working for St Louis based healthcare company SSM while Wilson had already embarked on his career at Ferguson - where he met Spradling, the woman who last month became his second wife.

When Wilson and Brown’s divorce was finalized - by which time he and Spradling were living together - both parties walked away with what they brought into the marriage. They paid their own attorney fees and court costs and Brown reverted to her maiden name.

The only items mentioned specifically are that Wilson took his Chevrolet Cruze 2011 - the one dented by an enraged Blumenthal - and Brown took her Pontiac G6.

And though theirs was a blame free divorce, Wilson agreed to pay his former wife $4000 in medical arrears incurred on her payments ensuring her coverage on his police health insurance. He paid another $250 a month for up to 12 months towards her health insurance until she got cover from her employer.

Spradling’s dealings with Blumenthal remain unresolved.

Court records indicate that on August 25, just two weeks after Wilson shot Brown, a case was filed with social services in the dispute between Spradling and Blumenthal over custody of their five-year-old son.
The child is believed to have been living with his mother and her now husband, Wilson, at a police safe house for the past three months. The details of the ongoing custody dispute are not a matter of public record.

Blumenthal’s first marriage to Terry Vanessa, 50, ended with their divorce in November 2003.

Within five months of that dissolution being finalized Spradling had moved into Blumenthal’s family home and though she and Blumenthal never married they lived together for a decade.

When they first got together Spradling, 13 years younger than Blumenthal’s first wife, was 27 to his 42.

He was a member of Glendale Fire Department’s C Shift where, as an alumni of the Greater St Louis County Fire Academy, he served for 15 years.

He is also a qualified Emergency Medical Technician who, on 27 August 2007, assisted at a clinical save that saw Abbott Ambulance honor him with an award.

A clinical save means that a patient’s heart has stopped beating and is restarted long enough to transport them to hospital.

In 2009 Spradling gave birth to their son. At the time Darren Wilson, 28, was working just 20 minutes down the road as a rookie cop at Jennings Police.

In 2010 Jennings city council decided that tensions between black civilians and the police force were so bad that they had to fire everybody and start from scratch.

Wilson was one of the few to get a new job and made the fateful move to Ferguson – bringing him into Spradling’s orbit and, ultimately, Michael Brown’s.

Blumenthal had taken a job as Safety Director for Niehaus Construction by the time of that showdown between the him, Spradling and her then lover Wilson.

And though Spradling’s statement made in May 2013 notes that Blumenthal was depressed at having ‘lost his job’ his most recent employment information still lists him at the firm.

None of the three were available for comment.

Darren Wilson is about to become a father for the first time, he revealed during an exclusive interview aired on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old officer broke the news that his wife, fellow cop Barbara Spradling, 37, is pregnant during an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos at a secret location.

The couple married quietly on October 24 in front of his lawyer and a judge in Overland, Missouri.

The interview marks the first time Wilson has spoken publicly since he shot dead unarmed teenager Michael Brown on August 9. It was aired after a grand jury’s decision not to indict him on any charges was announced and sparked mass riots in Ferguson, Missouri.

Wilson confirmed he had recently gotten married and his wife was pregnant, adding that the couple 'just want to live a normal life'.

However, Wilson conceded that there would be 'a new normal' for him following that fateful Saturday in August where an altercation on a quiet Ferguson street led to him shooting the unarmed 18-year-old.

Wilson said that being a police officer in Ferguson was the 'job of my life' and that his only dream in life was to be made sergeant.

'I wanted to stay on the road for 30 years and then retire as sergeant and have a retirement,' Wilson said. 'That’s all that I wanted.'

He has served for four years in the St Louis suburb and another two in another town.

The cop refused to say whether he would return to the force or resign, saying that decisions were still being made.

He added: 'I'm not sure it's possible. I mean, you think they would accept me? You think it'd be safe for me?'

He also said other officers could be at risk because of his reputation.

Wilson said that 'stressful was an understatement' to describe his life following the Michael Brown shooting.

'You are always looking to see if someone is following you or has noticed you,' Wilson said. 'I grew a beard, it was uncomfortable but it helped. You take precautions, where you sit in a restaurant, where you drive.

'Everything has to run through your head. It’s every time you walk, you make sure no one’s following you, everything.'

However the cop said he wanted something good to emerge from his experience. He told GMA: 'I would love to teach people. I would love to give more insight on … into the use of force and anything I can.

'Anything that I can get out of this career I’ve had so far and of the incident, I would love to give to someone else.'

Michael Brown's family reacted with anger on Wednesday, saying Wilson's interview added 'insult to injury'.

The teenager's mother, Lesley McSpadden, told CBS she didn't think Wilson wanted to kill Michael but that 'he wanted to kill someone'.

Wilson also revealed on Wednesday the moment that he knew he had killed Michael Brown.

'I saw the face he had go blank,' he said. 'His face was blank. I knew he had passed.'

Wilson had earlier recalled how he was on his way to grab lunch on August 9, when he came across Brown and friend Dorian Johnson walking single-file in the middle of the street.

Just a few minutes later, Brown would be shot dead after allegedly starting a fist-fight with the cop.

Wilson said Brown would be alive today if he had just followed his original order to stop walking on the street, and move to the sidewalk.

The 28-year-old officer was interviewed at a secret location less than 24 hours after the grand jury decision was announced.

He talked Stephanopoulos through each step of the confrontation which culminated in Wilson firing his gun for the first time in his law enforcement career and killing the unarmed teen.

While he feels remorse for Brown’s death, Wilson maintained that he made the right choice to use lethal force in the fight and would do it all over again.

'I don’t think it’s haunting; it’s always going to be something that happened,' he said. ‘The reason I have a clear conscience is because I know I did my job right.'

St Louis County Prosecutor Robert McCulloch revealed on Monday that Wilson was trying to arrest Brown in connection to a reported robbery on the day the 18-year-old was shot dead.

Wilson said he was in his police SUV when he saw Brown and Johnson and that he pulled up next to them, asking them to move to the sidewalk.

He said the two ignored his request and it was then that he noticed Brown carrying a handful of cigarillos - the same items stolen in a convenience store robbery he heard reported over the his police radio minutes earlier.

Wilson admitted he ‘probably never would have noticed the cigarillos’ if Brown ‘had just followed orders’.

Wilson said he would have left the two alone, and driven off in search of food as he was doing before.

Instead, Wilson said Brown was defensive from the start of their conversation, saying ‘f*** what you have to say’ when the officer asked him to move off the street.

Noticing the cigarillos in Brown’s hand, and how Johnson’s clothing matched the description in the robbery report, Wilson called for back-up and then pulled his car out in front of the pair to block their path.

Wilson says he planned to get out of the SUV and talk to the pair until back-up arrived, but that Brown slammed his driver’s door shut when he attempted to exit the vehicle, saying ‘what the f*** are you going to do about it?’

The officer then tried to push out the door to free himself from the vehicle, but says Brown kept pushing the door shut and eventually reached his hands into the vehicle to throw the first punch.

For the next 10 seconds, Wilson and Brown were engaged in a fist fight and the cop says it was then that he ‘felt the immense power’ 6'4', 292lb Brown had. Wilson is the same height and 210 pounds. Wilson has repeatedly used the analogy that he felt like a five-year-old grappling with Hulk Hogan.

‘He was a very large, a very powerful man,’ Wilson recalled.

Afraid that the next blow could render him unconscious, Wilson says his training kicked in and overrode his actions. He says he immediately ruled out mace, saying it could have been used to disable Brown but that Brown could have grabbed it and used it against him as well.

‘The only option left was my firearm,’ Wilson said.

But when Wilson reached for the handgun on his hip, he claims Brown reached for the weapon and tried to turn it around to shoot the officer.

Wilson was eventually able to wiggle the weapon free and turn it towards Brown, warning: ‘Get back or I’m going to shoot you’.

‘You’re too much of a p**** to shoot me,’ Wilson recalls Brown replying.

Brown continued to struggle for the gun, and it jammed the first two times that Wilson tried to pull the trigger. He was successful on the third try, firing the first shot at Brown from inside his vehicle. It was the first time Wilson ever fired his gun in his five-year career as a police officer, he revealed.

He says that first shot startled both himself and Brown, who backed up a few inches.

‘We were both in shock. It was shocking having to pull the trigger. It was also shocking that this was the only option that I had,’ Wilson said.

But he says the shot didn’t stop Brown, and that he actually became ‘even angrier’ coming back at the officer again.

Wilson responded by firing more shots, that sent Brown running away from the vehicle,

He says he then called for back up again, saying shots had been fired. That was a call that none of his fellow-officers received. WIlson claims it’s because the radio had been turned from channel 1 to 3 in the midst of the struggle with Brown.

Wilson says he then gave chase to Brown, saying it’s not his job to ‘sit and wait’ and he needed to keep the teen in sight for when back-up arrived.

That’s when Brown turned around and starting coming back towards the officer. Wilson says he also saw the teen reach towards his waistband, and feared Brown may be concealing a weapon - though some witness accounts, including Johnson, said Brown was lifting his hands in surrender.

Wilson said reports that Brown raised his hands 'were incorrect'.

‘My initial thought was, is there a weapon in there?’ Wilson said.

As the teen started ‘charging’ towards him, Wilson said he feared for his life and thought: ‘Can I shoot this guy? Legally can I? And the answer was I have to, he will kill me if he gets to me.’

For the dozens of students gathered at N.C. Central University Monday night to watch the Ferguson grand jury announcement, they already had a sense of what the decision would be.

When it was announced that the grand jury will not indict Ferguson, Mo. police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown, their reaction was subdued.

"I don't think any of this was ever set up to bring an indictment," said Jordan Perry, a NCCU junior who watched the announcement in the school’s James E. Shepard Memorial Library. "We can tell just from the delays that have been going on. I think everybody kinda already knew. We were just kinda holding on to a scrap of hope that maybe something positive would happen but I think we already knew.”

Fabiola Doissaint, a NCCU sophomore, didn't agree with the verdict.

"I just feel bad for Ferguson right now," she said. "To me, this seems unrealistic to me. This is crazy right now. Ferguson will not sleep tonight."

The grand jury's decision was announced by St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch shortly after 9 p.m. Monday.

"Our only goal was that our investigations would be thorough and complete to give to the grand jury, the (U.S.) Department of Justice and public all the evidence to make a fair decision," McCulloch said.

President Barack Obama, who spoke from The White House following the announcement, said disagreement is expected, no matter the grand jury's decision.

"We are a nation built on the rule of law," he said during a live media briefing. "And so we need to accept that this decision was the grand jury's to make. There are Americans who agree with it and Americans who are deeply disappointed, even angry. It's an understandable reaction."

Obama urged protesters to do so peacefully.

“Let me repeat Michael’s father’s words, hurting others or destroying property is not the answer," he said. "No matter what the grand jury decides, I don’t want my son’s death to be in vain. I want it to lead to incredible change, positive change. Change that makes the St. Louis area better for everyone.”

The anticipation of possible protests led Ferguson school officials to cancel school on Tuesday.

Several vigils and protests are planned across the Triangle and throughout the country on Tuesday. N.C. NAACP President William Barber, who has traveled to Ferguson and met with community leaders there, will share his reaction during a news conference Tuesday morning.

A vigil will be held at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Ferguson protests made international headlines for weeks following the Aug. 9 confrontation between Wilson and Brown, which inflamed tensions between the city’s majority black residents and majority white police force.

During the initial protests, local law enforcement – dressed in riot gear and carrying militarized weapons and vehicles – were criticized for what some perceived was a heavy-handed response, prompting the Missouri State Highway Patrol to oversee police efforts. The Missouri National Guard were also called in to help quell the riots and violence.

Locally, the Ferguson protests were a reminder of the multiple marches after the death of Jesus Huerta, 17, who died in November 2013 after shooting himself while handcuffed in the back of a Durham police car. The marches resulted in multiple arrests and damage to police cars and a police building.

Hundreds attended peaceful Ferguson protests and marches in Durham and Raleigh in August.

Wilson, the police officer, encountered Brown when he told the teenager and another person walking in the street with him to move out of the roadway, according to Brown’s autopsy report from the St. Louis County Medical Examiner's Office.

“The deceased became belligerent towards Officer Wilson,” the report said. “As Officer Wilson attempted to exit out of his patrol vehicle, the deceased pushed his door shut and began to struggle with Officer Wilson. Officer Wilson had his service weapon drawn, as the deceased began to run towards him, he discharged his service weapon several times.”

Witnesses said Brown, who was shot six times, was killed while his hands were up, or while he was running away.

The claim led to the protest slogan “hands up, don’t shoot,” which was echoed across the country. During an August protest in Durham, attendees raised their arms in the air and held signs that read “don’t shoot.”

Days later in Raleigh, about 70 people chanted “hands up, don’t shoot” and held their arms in the air while marching on the sidewalk from the old Wake County courthouse to the state Supreme Court building.

The shooting also prompted a federal civil rights investigation. U.S. Department of Justice officials said civil rights charges against Wilson are unlikely, according to The Washington Post.

Wilson faced potential charges that ranged from second-degree involuntary manslaughter, punishable by up to four years in prison, to first-degree murder.

Leaders of the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP responded Tuesday morning to a St. Louis County grand jury's decision not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, saying the decision was an "indictment and a charge against a system that is not willing to fully address the racial and discriminatory flaws that exist."

Speaking at a 10 a.m. news conference, NAACP President William Barber railed against a judicial system that he says perpetuates discrimination and the criminalization of black men.

"It's an indictment on a district attorney who was elected to be an advocate for the people and the search of truth as opposed to an advocate for the perpetrator," Barber said of the decision not to indict Wilson. "Mike Brown's family did not have an advocate in the secret rooms of the grand jury."

Prosecuting Attorney Bob McCulloch said the jury of nine whites and three blacks met on 25 separate days over three months, hearing more than 70 hours of testimony from about 60 witnesses, including three medical examiners and experts on blood, toxicology and firearms.

"They are the only people that have heard and examined every witness and every piece of evidence," McCullough said, adding that the jurors "poured their hearts and soul into this process."

After the announcement that Wilson would not be charged, violence erupted in the streets of St. Louis County. There were 61 arrests in Ferguson overnight, many for burglary and trespassing, and there were 21 more arrests in St. Louis, where protestors broke some store windows.

At least 14 people were injured during the violent night.

At Tuesday's news conference in Raleigh, Barber cautioned journalists in attendance about how they cover the protests.

"There is something underneath the protests. We have to deal with the fact, and we have to put this front and center," he said. "The reality of racial injustice in our system are not figments of people's imaginations. America cannot ignore the cry, the pain, the hurt."

Barber also called for reforms to the justice system that he said gives police officers "too much power." He said the NAACP and other civil rights groups are asking for reforms that will stop police abuse and require mandatory training on racial bias and the use of force. Barber also said every police officer should be required to wear cameras on their bodies to record every encounter with a civilian.

"A police officer is the only one I know that can knock on my door, hand a piece of paper to me and take my son out of my house in handcuffs and I don't do everything I can to stop him," he said. "That's power."

Gov. Jay Nixon (D) said at a news conference Tuesday that he would deploy hundreds more National Guard soldiers to Ferguson in response to overnight violence throughout the area. The additional troops will be stationed throughout the community to protect homes and businesses, he added.

“Last night criminals intent on lawlessness and destruction terrorized this community, burning buildings, firing guns, vandalizing store fronts and looting family businesses, many for the second time,” he said.

Nixon said there were already more than 700 troops in the area, but that number would increase to “more than 2,200 in the region.”

This time the MOVEMENT needs to last until well past 2016 or until EFFECTIVE CHANGE takes place in America, including JOBS for BLACK People.

Not simply low paying Temp JOBS even for BLACK People with College Degrees.

But Real JOBS like We had before the RECESSION!

We need Real JOBS and help to Re-Start SMALL BUSINESSES in BLACK Communities so We can HIRE Our BLACK Youth, just as We did before the RECESSION.

Tallahassee's Dream Defender's changed the time and location of their rally to 9 p.m. at the Civic Center.

Lead Organizer Brian Marshall said they will hold the rally regardless of the verdict.

Tallahassee’s Dream Defenders say they will hold a peaceful rally, marching from the Civic Center at 10 p.m.

In addition to the situation in Ferguson, Dream Defenders are rallying against other police brutality and race issues in Tallahassee, including the tasing of 61-year-old, unarmed Viola Young last month. They are also rallying for justice for Duane Strong, an 18-year-old shot and killed by police from inside his car at Cheek's nightclub in Tallahassee.

Judge: Race 'Significantly' influenced inmate's murder trial

A Cumberland County Superior Court judge made history Friday morning when he commuted a death row inmate’s sentence in the first test of North Carolina’s fledgling Racial Justice Act.

Superior Court Judge Greg Weeks ruled that race significantly influenced jury selection in Marcus Robinson’s 1994 trial in the 1991 shooting death of a white 17-year-old, Erik Tornblom.

The ruling means Robinson, a 38-year-old black man, will be taken off death row and will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Weeks said Robinson's attorneys "presented a wealth of evidence showing the persistent, persuasive and distorting role of race in jury selection in North Carolina."

"When the government's choice of jurors is tainted with racial bias, that overt wall casts down over the parties, the jury and the court to adhere to the law throughout the trial," Weeks said. "The very integrity of the court is jeopardized when a prosecutors discrimination invites cynicism respecting the jury’s neutrality and undermines public confidence."

The case is the first of more than 150 pending cases to get an evidentiary hearing before a judge under the Racial Justice Act, a 2009 law that allows death row prisoners and capital murder defendants to challenge their sentences or prosecutors' decisions with statistics and other evidence.

Weeks said that, by enacting the Racial Justice Act, the General Assembly made clear that North Carolina's laws reject the influence of race discrimination in the administration of the death penalty.

"It’s a widely accepted truth that race discrimination has historically had an impact on state policy in every aspect of our private and public lives, including education, housing, employment and criminal justice, " Weeks said in his ruling. "Race still divides us, and the Racial Justice Act recognizes that the justice system is not immune from this legacy of discrimination in our nation."

Prosecutors said Friday they planned to challenge Weeks' decision, and Cumberland County District Attorney Billy West declined further comment while the case was being appealed.

"There's justice at last," Weeks' mother, Shirley Burnes, said. "It's bittersweet, because I think about the family (of Erik Tornblom) and my son, but you've got to treat people right. You've got to treat people fair. That's what we depend on when we go through the system."

Tornblom's family left the courtroom visibly upset without commenting on the ruling.

Robinson and co-defendant Roderick Williams Jr. murdered Tornblom in 1991 after the teen gave his killers a ride from a Fayetteville convenience store. Tornblom was forced to drive to a field where he was shot with a sawed-off shotgun.

Robinson came close to death in January 2007, but a judge blocked his scheduled execution.

During a hearing in February, Robinson's defense team argued prosecutors' decisions to reject potential jurors who were black were influenced by race.

They cited a Michigan State University study that concluded black jurors were more likely to be dismissed than white jurors.

The study found that, of almost 160 people on North Carolina's death row, 31 had all-white juries, and 38 had only one person of color. A defendant is 2.6 times more likely to be sentenced to death if at least one of the victims is white, the study also found.

Union County prosecutor Jonathan Perry, who helped the Cumberland County District Attorney's Office argue the case against Robinson, said the study was untrustworthy because it was based on a too-limited sample of death penalty cases to provide meaningful results. The study also failed to detect numerous nonracial reasons that a person might be peremptorily struck from a jury, Perry said.

In his ruling, Weeks reiterated the study's findings, calling it very reliable and an example of the continued role of race in the justice system in Cumberland County and across the state. According to the court, prosecutors deliberately excluded black jurors from service in Robinson's case.

"The state's evidence not only failed to rebut Robinson's evidentiary showing, but in many respects, it reinforced and strengthened it," Weeks said. "The evidence should serve as a clear signal of the need for reform in capital jury selection proceedings in the future."

Weeks also noted that discrimination in jury selection across the state undermines the ability of the justice system to appear unbiased in capital cases.

"The very integrity of the court is jeopardized when a prosecutor's discrimination invites cynicism respecting the jury’s neutrality and undermines public confidence," he said.

People of Faith Against the Death Penalty, one of the most noted advocates for the Racial Justice Act, released a statement calling Weeks' ruling "a huge victory for justice, for the people of North Carolina, for the South and the country as a whole."

"This historic victory for justice would not have come about if not for the courage and persistence of ordinary North Carolina citizens who challenged these legacies of discrimination and demanded passage of the RJA," the nonprofit group said in a statement."

The North Carolina Chapter of the NAACP also released a statement:

"Today is a day where we must reflect on a dual tragedy. The loss of life of the Tornblom family is a tragedy that should grieve us all, and the Court's finding is a reminder of the tragedy that racial bias still affects and impacts the judicial process."

Last year, the Republican-led Legislature tried to repeal the Racial Justice Act, but Gov. Bev Perdue vetoed the effort. A subsequent vote in the General Assembly fell short of the required number of votes to override the veto.

A House committee is now looking at ways to narrow the scope of the law.
