Debate Over School Busing in North Carolina's Wake County Gets Uglier
A tense debate over school busing in North Carolina is getting uglier.
The state NAACP filed a complaint against the Wake County school board Friday after its chairman called proponents of a diversity program ''animals out of the cages'' at a meeting.
The NAACP complaint argues that school board Chairman Ron Margiotta and his allies seem to have racist attitudes.
Margiotta made the ''animals'' comment after opponents jeered a black congressional candidate. He says his comment was out of line but not racist.
The comment came before school board members voted 5-4 at a contentious meeting this week to scrap a county policy of maintaining diversity by assigning students to schools based on their socio-economic backgrounds.
N.C. NAACP Files Complaint Over Wake County School Board's Re-Segregation Decision
The N.C. NAACP has filed a formal complaint with the organization that accredits Wake County Schools over the school board's decision to end busing for diversity.
The complaint to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools alleges that the board majority has violated open meetings laws and dismissed input from opponents.
The complaint says the board has undermined the authority of Superintendent Del Burns.
The NAACP wants the association to preserve the existing system, a model for diversity that has been recognized nationally.
