John Lassiter, No To Charlotte DA Race; Supports Andrew Murray
John Lassiter Won't Run For DA
John Lassiter announced this morning that he will not run for District Attorney this year and will support fellow Republican Andrew Murray.
Lassiter, a former Charlotte City Council member and Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board member, said earlier this month that he was being urged by friends to run for the position, being vacated by the retirement of longtime DA Peter Gilchrist, a Democrat.
But Lassiter, who lost a bid for mayor in November to Democrat Anthony Foxx, said he will not run for office again this year.
“The obligations of my business and the opportunity to spend time with my family are more important in the coming months than engaging in a campaign, or preparing to take on the critical role the District Attorney will play in improving the criminal justice system in our county,” Lassiter said.
He said Murray will get his support.
“I am convinced that it is time for a person with his experience, skills and background to serve the people as our next District Attorney,” Lassiter said.
There are two declared candidates for the position – Murray, an Attorney, and Democrat Michael Barnes, a Charlotte City Council member.
Gilchrist has been the county's District Attorney for 36 years.
