Brittany Murphy's Death An Accident; Autopsy Results

Brittany Murphy's Death Ruled An Accident

Actress Brittany Murphy's death was an accident caused by a combination of pneumonia, an iron deficiency and "multiple drug intoxication," the Los Angeles County coroner said Thursday.

The 32-year-old actress was found dead in her Hollywood Hills, California, home December 20.

No information was given about what types of drugs were involved.

The coroner issued a short statement on his findings Thursday and said the autopsy report would be available within two weeks.

Her husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack, has told People magazine the actress had "laryngitis and flu-like symptoms" at the time of her death.

Monjack said Murphy used Vicoprofen to relieve pain from severe menstrual cramps.

"She was on an antibiotic and was taking cough medicine," he said.

Murphy was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, after she was rushed there in the early morning hours of Sunday, December 20.

The often bubbly, free-spirited actress appeared in films such as "Clueless," "8 Mile," "Don't Say a Word" and "Girl, Interrupted." She also lent her voice to animated works, including the movie "Happy Feet" -- in which she also sang -- and a regular voice role on the animated TV series "King of the Hill."

Murphy was best-known for her work in a string of comedies earlier this decade, including playing lead roles in "Uptown Girls" alongside fellow Georgia native Dakota Fanning and "Little Black Book" with Holly Hunter and Kathy Bates.

She is survived by her husband.

"Abandoned" Movie Trailer, Starring Brittany Murphy

Pictures Of Brittany Murphy In Last Movie Surface; "Abandoned" director: She "Was A Pro"

Photos of fallen star Brittany Murphy playing what would be her final movie role have emerged -- and the director who guided her in "Abandoned" is adamantly refuting claims the actress was difficult to work with.

"It hurts me to hear all this salacious stuff because my experience with Brittany was really one of my best experiences with an actress," director Michael Feifer told People.com.

"Brittany was a pro," he said. "When she needed to turn it on, she just threw a switch and she was on ... playing frantic came really easy and playing sweet came really easy."

In the film, Murphy plays a woman desperately trying to find her boyfriend when he vanishes from a hospital. During the course of the movie, London's Daily mail reported, her character, Mary Walsh, faces down threats to her life -- and her sanity.

Murphy's British screenwriter husband, Simon Monjack, also was involved in the flick, working on the actress’ hair and makeup.

"The two of them really took care of each other," Feifer told The Associated Press. "He was her teddy bear, and she was just his little princess."

Feifer hopes to release the indie thriller –- which Murphy shot in June -- in 2010.

At least one colleague who worked with her on a movie set in recent months -- while praising her work ethic -- raised concerns about the actress' health.

"She looked ill, as much as 10 pounds underweight, and she's a small person to begin with," Scott Chambers reportedly told the Los Angeles Times. "She easily could have made an excuse not to come to work, but she didn't. She said, 'I've got to get better, but I want to do this part.' "

Chambers was an executive producer on the thriller "Something Wicked."

Murphy finished shooting the flick, in which she plays a psychiatrist, just days before beginning work on "Abandoned."

After finishing "Abandoned," Murphy worked on a film called "The Caller," but left the project over what her representative described as "creative differences," People.com reports.

The 32-year-old "Clueless" and "Sin City" star died after collapsing at her Hollywood home Sunday morning.

Her husband has vociferously struck back at rumors swirling that Murphy's death was an overdose.

"I'm confident it wasn't an overdose," he told the Daily News. "She was not a drug addict."

He confirmed that investigators hauled away a trove of prescription medicines -- "but nothing else," calling reports the beauty abused drugs "rubbish."

Brittany Murphy Laid To Rest Christmas Eve At Forest Lawn

Brittany Murphy To Be Laid To Rest In Christmas Eve Service At Same LA Cemetery As Michael Jackson

Tragic Brittany Murphy will be laid to rest on Christmas Eve in the same cemetery as Michael Jackson.

Insiders say a funeral for the actress - who died on Sunday at the age of 32 - will take place tomorrow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Los Angeles Hollywood Hills.

The service is listed as 'strictly private'. According to reports, Murphy's body has now arrived at the cemetery in preparation for the service.

The Clueless star died on Sunday morning after collapsing at her Los Angeles home and suffering a cardiac arrest.

News of her funeral comes as pictures emerged of the actress on the set of what will be her last film - psychological thriller Abandoned.

In the movie, which she only finished shooting in the late summer, Murphy, 32, stars as Mary Walsh, a woman who believes her husband has vanished and is fighting not only to find him but to counter threats to her own life and sanity.

Meanwhile producers behind another movie the actress was set to star in have decided to recast her role.

Shrinking Charlotte producer Darren VanCleave has told celebrity website TMZ that he has decided to forge ahead with the project, and will dedicate the movie to the late actress.

VanCleave hasn't thought about who will be replacing Murphy yet, with the film put on hold until the new year.

Shrinking Charlotte is romantic comedy about three single men who stalk and date a woman in therapy in order to learn about honesty, fate, and eventually love. It was expected to be released in 2010.

It emerged on Tuesday that ten different types of medication were found on Murphy's bedside table by an officer from Los Angeles County Coroner's department, according to reports.

They contained anti-depressants, anti-convulsants, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics.

A post-mortem examination was carried out on Monday but it will take several weeks before the results of toxicology and neurological tests are revealed.

But Mr Monjack, who was questioned about his wife's death yesterday, insisted she had not died of a drugs overdose and revealed they planned to start a family next year.

She was an only child,' he said. 'She wanted a baby. Her dream next year was to have a child, and we talked about how he or she would look. She'd say, "They'd better have your eyes and lips and my hair".'

Although he initially opposed a post-mortem examination, he was over-ruled by the coroner.

'My initial reaction to the autopsy was they are going to cut her open,' Mr Monjack said. 'I could not bear it. That would break her mother but we realised we needed to know.'

In an interview with U.S. magazine People, he revealed his wife of almost three years had suffered from a heart murmur, which causes fatigue, dizziness and irregular heartbeats.

The condition is not life threatening and she was not taking any medication to treat it. The actress had also been suffering from laryngitis in the days leading up to her death.

'She was on herbal remedies that wouldn't speed up her heart,' Mr Monjack said. 'There was nothing here that could endanger her; there was prescription medication in the house for her female time and some cough syrup. That was it.'

Brittany Murphy's Death Possible Prescription Drug Overdose

Brittany's "Spaced-Out" World

The death of beautiful actress Brittany Murphy came as no shock to those who knew her, reports Gerald Posner. An inside account of drug rumors, erratic behavior, and a notorious husband.

“This is like Lindsay Lohan dying,” a studio executive told me, reacting to the news Sunday afternoon that 32-year-old actress Brittany Murphy had been pronounced dead a few hours earlier at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. “It really doesn’t come, unfortunately, as a shock.”

While Murphy, the star of Clueless, Don't Say a Word and, most memorably, 8 Mile, may have had a clean-cut image for most of her fans, inside the small world of Hollywood, the sentiment yesterday was unanimous: She was a mess.

Virtually everyone I spoke with who knew her—none of whom would allow their names to be used—suggested that it was a given that she had a drug problem, involving both heroin and cocaine, though none admitted to directly seeing her use or abuse narcotics. “She had too many drugs and too little food,” said a makeup artist who had worked with her, adding that she sometimes “nodded off” in front of her.

“She was a space cadet most of the time when I saw her,” added the studio executive. Others echoed that privately.

Murphy had been dogged by such rumors for years, even feeling it necessary, in 2005, to make a statement about cocaine following a big weight loss: "I have never tried it in my entire life. I've never even seen it. I am also way too high-strung. I can't even take a Sudafed. Can you imagine? My God. I think my heart would explode."

But things had gotten a lot worse recently, especially since Murphy, who had earlier dated Ashton Kutcher, married British director/producer Simon Monjack at his Hollywood house in a small ceremony in May 2007.

Monjack’s reputation rivaled Murphy’s. He was arrested on expired visa charges in the middle of the night, less than two months before he got hitched to Murphy; had a $470,132 judgment against him from a British bank and a $50,000 judgment from his ex-wife; and had been evicted from two apartments for failing to pay back rent. (Monjack's lawyer told reporters the charges were made by "disgruntled ex-girlfriends" and that immigration lawyers had concluded the marriage had no bearing on his visa status.)

After her marriage to Monjack, she was spotted at a number of industry functions seemingly “out of it,” a fellow actor told me late Sunday. Some acquaintances weren’t sure the matchup was the best for an actress who might be battling her own demons and was in public denial of any problem. Actor and sometimes publicist Joel Michaely had been inseparable from Murphy for a few years and was her closest platonic friend.

Michaely seemed to be a stabilizing influence on Murphy. But after Monjack came on board, Michaely was out. “She’s going through some things in her life right now,” an acquaintance told me he said, “and I don’t want to be around her right now.” (Michaely could not be reached for comment.)

Last year, Murphy began acting bizarrely while on the Los Angeles movie set of Across the Hall, one crewman told me. Monjack also drew attention. He not only loitered on the set, but interrupted so frequently that the movie’s producers called a summit to figure out how to block him from the set without further infuriating Murphy.

Things got worse this November. While filming the upcoming movie The Caller, Murphy was replaced with Twilight star Rachelle Lefevre. In the world of Hollywood, no star, even a difficult one, is fired. Though Murphy’s publicist denied her dismissal had anything to do with bad behavior, sources close to the production company said that she had been so difficult on set, showing up late, and sometimes unable to film, that they replaced her. Saturday Night Live subsequently did a skit mocking her out-of-it demeanor.

On November 29, Murphy and Monjack flew back to Los Angeles after a stay in New York. Paparazzi waiting to meet them were kept at bay by American Airlines security because of “a medical emergency.” The EMT workers who got on the plane found Monjack incoherent. At Marina Del Ray Medical Center, where he was brought by ambulance, he emerged disheveled several hours later, but didn’t talk to the press. A Murphy rep said the ER detour was only an asthma scare, and he was well enough for the couple of stop at an In and Out Burger on the way home.

The Daily Beast has learned that on December 1, at a premiere, two autograph seekers waited to get some signatures from Murphy. They were regular fans and she knew them. Later, they told an acquaintance that she “seemed totally out of it.”

Today, Murphy’s publicist, Nicole Perna, issued a statement: "In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is their wish that you respect their privacy."

That is unlikely to be the case until the authorities finish their examination about the cause of death. All they will release so far is the timeline. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded shortly after 8 a.m. to a 911 call from Monjack and Murphy’s West Hollywood Hills home at 1895 West Rising Glen. Brittany Murphy's mother, Sharon, who divorced her convicted mobster husband, Angelo Bertolotti, when Brittany was only 2, evidently found her daughter unconscious in the shower. A British neighbor, Claire Staples, came outside when she heard the early-morning commotion.

The ambulance that arrived was too large, The Daily Beast learned, to enter the house’s driveway. Paramedics quickly determined Murphy was in full cardiac arrest and immediately administered CPR. They worked on Murphy on a stretcher. Staples watched as they pumped her chest in a vain effort to revive her. The paramedics continued CPR en route to the hospital, but Murphy never responded.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center spokeswoman Sally Stewart said Murphy died at 10:04 a.m., although one person at the scene told The Daily Beast that she was dead on arrival. Although cardiac arrest was unofficially mentioned in the confusion at the hospital, Stewart would not provide an official cause of death or any other information.

Los Angeles police officially opened an investigation into Murphy’s death, said Officer Norma Eisenman. Early this afternoon, a uniformed sergeant arrived and told the small group of reporters that it was “not a crime scene.” Four hours later, by early evening, when the street was crammed with reporters and TV trucks, two plainclothes detectives arrived, and sealed the scene.

The Daily Beast has learned that Murphy, as do many stars, used an alias—Lola Manilow—when booking cars and hotels and travel. Police would not say whether they were looking into Murphy’s prescription history, nor whether they were checking prescriptions possibly written to her alias. The coroner has slated an autopsy for Monday or Tuesday. Monjack insisted, to no avail, that Cedars-Sinai not do an autopsy, sources told me, but the Murphy family is cooperating completely with the police and coroner.

It should be an interesting report. Murphy, together with a handful of other celebs—Victoria Beckham, Teri Hatcher, and Christine Taylor—were dubbed in the press “Lollipop Syndrome” girls, for their gaunt bodies and huge heads. It wasn’t always this way. Back in 1999, she beat out Melissa Etheridge to land the lead in the never-made biopic of another celebrity who died too young. The subject: the healthy-sized Janis Joplin.

Murphy Sick and Vomiting Just Before She Died

Brittany Murphy was very ill in the hours before she went into cardiac arrest and died, sources tell TMZ.

We're told Murphy was taking prescription meds for flu-like symptoms she had been experiencing for several days. We're told Murphy began vomiting early Sunday morning and told family members she was feeling very ill.

Sources say various prescriptions were found in the home -- written for Brittany Murphy, husband Simon Monjack, and Brittany's mom. One source says, "There were a lot ... a lot of prescriptions in the house."

Law enforcement sources tell us Murphy collapsed in the bathroom and somehow ended up in the shower ... there was, we're told, a significant amount of vomit in the immediate area.

We're also told authorities did not find illegal drugs in the house, but Murphy was definitely taking various prescription meds.

Sources say her condition and the meds could have triggered a heart attack, but it's too early to know. An autopsy will be performed Monday or Tuesday. We reported earlier Monjack did not want an autopsy but ultimately it's the Coroner's call.

As we first reported, Brittany Murphy's mother told paramedics her daughter suffered from diabetes. We're told it was type 2 diabetes and people involved in the case doubt her condition caused her death.

Brittany Murphy's Husband Doesn't Want Autopsy

Brittany Murphy's husband, Simon Monjack, told hospital staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center he did not want an autopsy performed on his deceased wife, multiple sources tell TMZ.

We're told, however, despite Monjack's wishes, the L.A. County Coroner's office will perform an autopsy on Murphy. As we first reported, Murphy went into cardiac arrest this morning and could not be revived.

TMZ has also learned Brittany Murphy's mother, who found Murphy unconscious in the shower and called 911, told paramedics her daughter had a history of diabetes. We have not been able to confirm if Murphy did indeed have diabetes, and if so, whether it contributed to her death.

Ed Winter from the L.A. County Coroner's Office tells TMZ foul play is not suspected at this time. Some prescriptions were found in the house, but he wouldn't say what kind, and they will be examined as well. Toxicology tests will be performed, which could take up to six weeks.
