PewDiePie could lose millions of dollars.

If you play video games, or are under the age of 20, you’ve likely heard of PewDiePie. He’s the irreverent YouTube vlogger (or video blogger) who reviews products from Nintendo, Sony-Playstation and the like, while also poking fun at Internet culture.

He also happens to be the richest YouTube star of all time:

Forbes says he made approximately $15 million last year, more than anyone else doing similar work.

In total, his videos have been viewed 14.7 billion times, more than any other individual on YouTube.

And with 53 million subscribers, he has nearly double as many subscriptions as the video streaming service’s next top star.

But this week, the reputation of PewDiePie, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, suffered a major blow:

Disney, the company that owns the studio that helps promote Kjellberg’s videos, severed its ties with him after the Wall Street Journal reported that Kjellberg has posted nine videos since August that include offensive material.

In some of the videos, he paid two shirtless Indian men to make a video holding up a sign that said “Death to All Jews.” In another, he showed a man dressed as Jesus Christ saying, “Hitler did absolutely nothing wrong.”

which is owned by Google, followed suit, announcing it would pull Kjellberg’s channel from its premium advertising program and cancel the second season of his reality show, Variety reported.

Kjellberg responded to the initial Wall Street Journalreport in a Tumblr post, saying he was “trying to show how crazy the modern world is, specifically some of the services available online.

“I understand that these jokes were ultimately offensive,” he added. “As laughable as it is to believe that I might actually endorse these people, to anyone unsure on my standpoint regarding hate-based groups: No, I don’t support these people in any way.”

While it is too early to say what the lasting impact of his getting dropped will be, NeoReach, a social media data company, told MONEY that losing the YouTube agreement could end up costing Kjellberg millions of dollars.

Americans ignoring conservative falsehoods about Obama and Israel

As you know, conservatives have been engaged in a full-throttle campaign to distort Obama’s positions on Israel, as part of a comically transparent effort to achieve the almost-never-realized conservative dream of driving a wedge between Jewish voters and the Democratic Party. Some on the right have confidently asserted that Obama’s recent speeches on the Middle East have finally unmasked his hostility to Israel and his shameful (if carefully disguised) sympathy for Palestinians.

In that context, you’d think this Pew poll would be getting a bit more attention:

Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, far more Americans continue to say they sympathize with Israel rather than the Palestinians (by 48% to 11%). These opinions are little changed from recent years.

A plurality (50%) says Barack Obama is striking the right balance in the Middle East situation, while 21% say he favors the Palestinians too much. There has also been no change in these views over the past year; in April 2010, 47% said Obama struck the right balance and 21% said he favored the Palestinians too much.

Barely more than a fifth of Americans agree with the right’s contention that Obama has revealed himself as too pro-Palestinian even though they’re also far more disposed to sympathize with Israel.

And that’s not all. Not even Republicans and white evangelicals — who appear to be one of the target audiences of the campaign to paint Obama as anti-Israel — are willing to go along in any greater numbers with this nonsense:

Even among Republicans and white evangelicals -- who already were more likely to say that Obama tilts too much toward the Palestinians -- there has been no significant increase in the percentages expressing this view since last year.

Unfortunately, Pew tells me that the sample of Jewish Americans surveyed is too small to indicate whether there's been any movement among them on these questions. I have no doubt that Obama’s reelection team is worried about this possibility; they’d be committing malpractice if they didn’t worry about everything that might go wrong. But as I and Ben Smith have both pointed out, it’s highly unlikely that Obama will lose a meaningful amount of Jewish support in the end.

To be sure, the campaign to paint-Obama as anti-Israel isn’t just about Israel. As I’ve noted before, it’s also part of an effort to feed a broader narrative, in which the Kenyan Muslim Marxist in the White House harbors seething hostility and ill will towards a fellow western-style democracy struggling to survive against existential threats from hordes of Arab and Muslim enemies.

I don’t know how you measure whether that subtext is gaining any traction, but the first national poll taken since Obama’s Mideast speeches seems to demonstrate clearly that the American public overwhelmingly rejects the topline argument conservatives are making about them.

UPDATE: The poll shows that less than half of Republicans, 40 percent, say Obama is too pro-Palestinian, only marginally more than the 31 percent who say he strikes the right balance. Among white evangelicals, the numbers are 39-33 — and neither category has shifted much at all since last year.


UPDATE II: It gets even better. I just got a further breakdown of the numbers from Mike Dimock, the associate director at Pew Research, and he tells me that a plurality of those who are more sympathetic with Israel also say Obama has the balance right.

Of those who are more sympathetic to Israel, 49 percent say he strikes the right balance, versus only 38 percent who say he favors the Palestinians too much.

Helen Thomas Expressed Obama's True Sentiment About Jews? Possibly

Most Americans are outraged at Helen Thomas' culturally and ethnically based anti-semitic biases, said with seemingly complete sobriety and coherence this past week to a rolling video camera. But if Americans are honest, they would have to admit that the current administration's policies, positions, and preferences towards Israel come scarily close to agreement with the disgraced columnist for Hearst newspapers.

This is particularly so in recent weeks.

It is one thing for a journalist with ethnic origins from the middle east to advocate over and over again across many administrations for the elimination of the Israeli state. It is another matter altogether for the first President in perhaps two generations to make the case that Israel should be left defenseless, so as to allow her enemies eliminate her.

One is nothing more dangerous than rhetoric that only weak-minded people would absorb. The other is a dangerous position towards one of America's most important allies, in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods on the globe.



One makes a statement to a camera, knowing and understanding that what she is saying is being recorded, and will likely be revealed. The other has been running anti-Israeli subterfuge for the entirety of his time in office, and while intending to keep his bad behavior from coming to light, was unable to prevent things like making Israel's elected Prime Minister wait for hours unattended in a White House meeting room.

Helen Thomas has often held, and even on occasion been cited spouting the view of terrorist groups, specifically Hezbollah, a group that has been and is currently still on America's terror watch list. Barack Obama has at every opportunity expressed dissatisfaction on Israel's domestic policy, even wishing to tell them where they may or may not build homes. He has done this while mostly ignoring terror threats from other noted terror states who have never relented from their promise to wipe Israel off the map.

Helen Thomas regularly and dishonestly made up facts to support her questions that were more statement of opinion concluded with question marks. Barack Obama demands answers of Israel on moves they make to prevent groups from shipping dangerous weapons across open waters directly into Gaza and thus giving the terrorists ability to aim and fire on Israeli towns.

President Obama condemns the lack of international alert to Israel's right to board hostile vessels in waters off their shore. Helen Thomas condemned the right of Israel to shoot back at terrorists who were lobbing missiles into their territory from Lebanon (her nation of origin).

Both have been largely silent on the disgusting video display of the animals attacking Israeli Defense Forces, brutalizing them with clubs, sections of pipe, and knives.

Both have also been silent on the administration's position on a United Nation's resolution that was passed late on a Friday afternoon (thus avoiding much media scrutiny) in which for the first time ever, the American administration took the anti-American view siding against Israel and calling for the tiny nation to eliminate their nuclear weapons.

Weapons that have kept the peace in the middle east for several decades, never once having been fired.

President Obama has treated Prime Minister Netanyahu appallingly. Multiple times. His efforts to handcuff the most significant ally we have in the region have caused the Israelis to realize that we might not be their best friend these days. His constant suspicious judgement of those who are on our side has perhaps helped them understand that they may need to be more vigilant, understanding they may have to go the fight for freedom alone.

Yes, after the immediate aftermath of the flotilla attacks, the administration put on a strict "we support Israel," letter of the law face of support.

But the President's heart was not in it then, and his distrust of Israel is notable even now.

Both believe it, but Helen Thomas said it, and President Barack Obama is attempting to legislate it.

Crazy Aunt Helen should be put out to pasture for an extended absence from the media stage.



But I'm of equal opinion that President Obama should have his agenda sent to the same place. Alienating allies is not the part of "Hope and Change" that the America voted for.

And if he needs to have it proven to him... well...

November is closing fast.

White House Releases President Obama's Statements On Today's Holocaust Museum Shootings

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said he told Obama about the shooting. Gibbs later told reporters he gave Obama the facts as they were known at the time, shortly after shots were fired. Gibbs says the White House was receiving regular updates from the FBI, Homeland Security Council and the Situation Room.”

President Obama's statements:

“I am shocked and saddened by today’s shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum," said in the statement released Wednesday night. "This outrageous act reminds us that we must remain vigilant against anti-Semitism and prejudice in all its forms. No American institution is more important to this effort than the Holocaust Museum, and no act of violence will diminish our determination to honor those who were lost by building a more peaceful and tolerant world."

“Today, we have lost a courageous security guard who stood watch at this place of solemn remembrance. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends in this painful time.”

Recent DHS Report Warned Of Racial Hatred, Anti-Semitic Violence....Possible Anger Over Pres. Obama's Election

A heavily criticized Department of Homeland Security Report on right-wing extremism that was released in April warned precisely of the type of violent anti-Semitic activity that occurred at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. on Wednesday.

Early this afternoon, a man in his late-80s with ties to white supremacist organizations opened fire inside the museum, reportedly hitting two people, including a security guard, in the process.

James W. Von Brunn, according to reports, has a history of anti-Semitism and may have been driven by such feelings when he committed his violent act. Indeed, Von Brunn even had anti-Semitic writings on his web site, and had made pejorative remarks about Jewish control of the Justice system.

In light of these biographical revelations, it is worth revisiting the DHS report that was deemed by conservatives to be so controversial.

In April, the Department of Homeland Security issued a draft memorandum warning that the current economic and political landscape created dangerously ripe conditions for a resurgence in radicalization and extremist recruitment. In it, federal officials warned specifically about an upswing of anti-Semitic behavior.

"Anti-Semitic extremists attribute these losses to a deliberate conspiracy conducted by a cable of Jewish 'financial elites,'" the report read. "These 'accusatory' tactics are employed to draw new recruits into right-wing extremist groups and further radicalize those already subscribing to extremist beliefs."

When the 10-page DHS memorandum was made public, however, warnings like these largely took the back seat to charges that the department had been politically motivated in its assessments and writings. Indeed, a wide swath of voices in the conservative movement -- from Rush Limbaugh to RNC Chairman Michael Steele -- lashed out at DHS Secretary Napolitano over what they deemed an anti-Republican report.

"This is the height of insult here," Steele told Fox News. "I mean to segment out Americans who dissent from this administration, to segment out conservatives in this country who have a different philosophy or view from this administration, and labeling them as terrorists and then to call into question the service of the men and women who are right now standing on that wall defending our freedom and linking them to terrorism while you refuse to call the terrorists -- the real terrorists -- terrorists, to me it's the height of insult."

It's been several months now since that DHS report was issues and, sadly, the study is proving increasingly prescient. In addition to the Von Brunn shootings, there has been the killing of abortion provider George Tiller, another type of ideologically-driven killing that Napolitano warned against.

"Rightwing Extremism" in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly anti-government, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely," the DHS report reads. "It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration."
