De'Andre Kidd's Mother Thanks CMPD For Swiftly Solving Crime (Arrests)

De'Andre Kidd's Mother Thanks Charlotte Police Officers For Quick Arrests In Teen's Murder

Less than 36 hours after a 17-year-old student was shot to death, four suspects are behind bars.

The shooting happened early Sunday morning in the 2700 block of Watson Drive.

Four men have been arrested in connection with De'Andre Kidd's murder. Police are searching for one more suspect.

Kidd's mother, Dandrea McConneyhead, spent Monday planning a memorial for her son.

"I started getting his pictures together because I want to get him a memory book made," she said.

Kidd and his cousin Maurice Wilson were both shot in a car as they were returning home from a restaurant early Sunday morning. Kidd died at the scene. His cousin remained hospitalized Monday.

Police have arrested four out of five suspects -- Craig Leverette, 18; Billy Williams, 18; Cameron Butler, 19; and Larry Gilchrist, 20. Police are still searching for Titus Campbell, 19.

"I just want to thank everybody -- the homicide team, the police department," said McConneyhead. "I just want to thank everybody for doing a wonderful job."

Kidd was a student at West Mecklenburg High School. He was popular and stayed out of trouble and was planning to join the service next year.

"We're going to have a moment of silence for him and we have counselors here. We'll be set up in the auditorium for any student who may want to talk," Principal Denise Atkinson said Monday morning.

The men charged in Kidd's death have been arrested numerous times on drugs, weapons and assault charges.

"We're trying to bring a greater focus to that through the county whereby we are trying to designate them habitual offenders a lot sooner," said Police Chief Rodney Monroe.

Police have not said if the victims or suspects knew each other and what, if anything, sparked the shooting.
