353 Journalists Follow Tiger Woods & Mickelson To Charlotte (Quail Hollow)

National Media Descends On Quail Hollow For Tiger Coverage

Look around at the parking signs at the Quail Hollow Championship in south Charlotte, and you will see names you've never seen before: CNN, NBC News, ABC News, CBS News.

The Tiger Woods scandal and his return to golf have turned his second appearance at a tournament into something more than a sports event.

There are 353 journalists who've been given permission to cover the tournament -- about 100 more than in 2009. The group was so large that the tent where members of the media are asked to work was expanded.

"We've obviously had to create a little more desk space, a little more working space," explained Lee Patterson, the tournament's Director of Communications.

The attention is so high that reporters and photographers will need a special credential to follow Woods along the golf course during tournament play. A separate credential will allow them to follow any other golfer.

"There is so much more reaction, response, readership, viewership, e-mails, comments when he plays," said Bob Harig from ESPN.com

"He really does heighten the interest in so many ways."
