Laurel's "Black Writers"
Black Writers
Our intelligence was created before the world was formed.
Greatness has flowed through our veins since the existence of Mankind.
“Let’s confine them and place fear in their hearts”, said fools who did not understand anyone unlike themselves.
Still we continued to write in songs and on quilts.
Then along came the marvelous and bold ones: Wheatley, Cullen, Ellison, Hughes, Hurston, Baldwin, Angelou, Giovanni, Morrison, Cleage, McMillian, Sanchez to show that nothing could stop the truth from being told and still we rise!
Rising to places where we are Free to express our Liberty;
Free to celebrate our culture and our beauty;
Free to stand up tall and proud; leaving our mark in History;
Refusing to be silent
We are Black Writers.
