WIKILEAKS founder Julian Assange on Sunday said he thinks President Trump's adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner was "correct" if he attempted to set up backchannel communication with Russian leadership.

"Kushner correct to create channels with everyone," Assange tweeted Sunday, following reports that Kushner sought to set up a line of communication between the Trump transition team and Moscow.

"CIA has no authority over leadership and is financially motivated to increase conflict."

Washington Post reported last week that Kushner in December sought to establish a backchannel line of communication between the Trump transition team and Moscow.

The move came during a meeting with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

The FBI is looking at meetings that Kushner fielded with Kislyak and Russian banking executive Sergey Gorkov in December as part of the law enforcement investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

**** Obama commutes sentence of Chelsea Manning in last-minute clemency push


WASHINGTON — President Obama has commuted the sentence of Chelsea Manning, the Army private serving a 35-year sentence for leaking classified military secrets to Wikileaks, the White House said Tuesday.

Manning will be released May 17 after serving nearly seven years for stealing and releasing secret cables that divulged U.S. military and diplomatic operations.

The soldier, who was convicted under the name of Bradley Manning and now identifies herself as a woman, attracted widespread support from privacy advocates and transgender activists who complained that she couldn't get the medical help she needed in the military prison in Leavenworth, Kan.

The action brought immediate rebuke from Republicans on Capitol Hill.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., called it "outrageous" and said it set "a dangerous precedent that those who compromise our national security won’t be held accountable for their crimes.”

"I don’t understand why the president would feel special compassion for someone who endangered the lives of our troops, diplomats, intelligence officers, and allies," Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark. "We ought not treat a traitor like a martyr."

Obama also granted full pardons in a number of high-profile cases, including:

► Former general James Cartwright, convicted last October of lying to the FBI in a leak investigation. The former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was accused of lying about his role in disclosing classified information about the use of the Stuxnet computer virus to disrupt Iran's nuclear program.

► Baseball Hall of Famer Willie McCovey, convicted of tax evasion in 1996.

► Ian Schrager, co-founder of New York's famed Studio 54 nightclub, convicted of tax fraud in 1980.

► Oscar Lopez Rivera, a Puerto Rican nationalist who was the last remaining member of a Puerto Rican terrorist group still in prison. President Bill Clinton commuted the sentences of 16 members of the group for setting off bombs in 1970s and '80s, but Rivera refused the clemency to protest another member who was not released.

► Stephen Lee Arrington, convicted in a drug conspiracy that involved carmaker John Z. DeLorean, known for making the car made famous in the Back to the Future trilogy starring Michael J. Fox. DeLorean was acquitted, but Arrington pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in prison.

Those names were among the list of 64 pardons and 209 commutations Obama granted Tuesday, with less than four days left in his presidency, bringing his total number of acts of clemency to 212 pardons and 1,385 commutations.

Though the Unlike full pardons, which extinguish all the legal consequences of a conviction, a commutation has the more limited effect of shortening a sentence while leaving other consequences intact.

Unlike other executive actions, the constitutional power to grant "pardons and reprieves for offenses against the United States" is one of the president's most absolute powers, and cannot be revoked by President Trump.

The bulk of the clemency actions Tuesday were part of Obama's clemency initiative, which seeks to shorten the sentences of drug offenders who received long mandatory minimum sentences under laws that have since been rolled back.

The White House did not comment on any specific case, though White House Counsel Neil Eggleston said in a statement that the presidential mercy shows that the United States is a "forgiving nation, where hard work and a commitment to rehabilitation can lead to a second chance."

But Obama aides seemed to signal that Obama was considering presidential mercy for Manning last week, when Earnest seemed to take pains to differentiate Manning's case from that of Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor accused of violating the espionage act by leaking details of secret surveillance programs.

"The situation of these two individuals is quite different," Earnest said. "I know that there's a temptation because the crimes were relatively similar, to lump the two cases together. 

But there are some important differences, including the scale of the crimes that were committed and the consequences of their crimes."

A full pardon for Snowden — the only available form of clemency, since he hasn't been convicted yet — appears unlikely. "Mr. Snowden has not filed paperwork to seek clemency from the administration," White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Tuesday. Obama has previously made that a requirement for consideration.

Also, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange had promised to allow himself to be extradited to the United States if Manning was released. He's now holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in London, where he's sought diplomatic protection.

Assange praised the "courage and determination" of Manning supporters on Tuesday, but did not immediately say whether he would make good on the promise. The White House did not rule out additional clemency actions before the end of Obama's term.

Earnest said the president was aware of the perils of late-term, politically motivated clemency actions that have become the norm in the last two administrations, and suggested that Obama wouldn't grant any more controversial pardons on his way out the door on Friday.

"The president has been judicious about using this authority in a way that he believes is consistent with American interests and the pursuit of justice.

And if we feel it is ever necessary for us to make that case, we'll want to make sure that we have ample opportunity to make it," he said.

The United States must either stop accusing Russia of meddling in its elections or prove it, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday.

Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was "indecent" of the United States to "groundlessly" accuse Russia of intervention in the US election campaign, Russian state news agency Tass reported.

"They should either stop talking about that or produce some proof at last. Otherwise it all begins to look unseemly," Peskov reportedly said about the latest accusations that Russia was responsible for hacker attacks.

President Barack Obama on Thursday vowed retaliatory action against Russia in the light of allegations that it meddled in the US presidential election campaign.

"I think there is no doubt that when any foreign government tries to impact the integrity of our elections that we need to take action and we will at a time and place of our own choosing," he told NPR.

What is known about the hacking

• Data and thousands of emails were stolen from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman, John Podesta, among other targets.

• US intelligence agencies in October pinned blame on Russia for campaign-related hacking.

• WikiLeaks, which published much of the information obtained by hacking, has refused to reveal its sources.

• The United States has not alleged that Russia interfered with the voting process on Election Day.

'Sophisticated tools'

A US official familiar with the election-related hacking told CNN Thursday that the operation was carried out with sophisticated hacking tools, suggesting that Putin was involved.

The source said while Putin's "fingerprints" were not on the hacking, "the nature of the operation was such that this had to be approved by top levels of the Russian government."

Russian cyberhacking activity has continued largely unabated since the election, including against US political organizations, US officials briefed on the investigation told CNN.

US President-elect Donald Trump dismissed the US intelligence community's assessment, in comments Sunday.

He suggested that there was no proof Russia had hacked the election, saying the snooping in Democratic Party servers and emails of Clinton campaign staffers could have been done by China or even someone sitting in New Jersey.

Clinton: Putin grudge was behind hack

Clinton said Thursday night that Putin's alleged involvement in the hacking of Democratic organizations during the 2016 election stemmed from a longtime grudge the Russian President has held against her.

Meanwhile, her campaign chairman, Podesta, issued a scathing rebuke of the FBI.

He wrote in a Washington Post op-ed that the bureau's "seemingly lackadaisical response to the very real Russian plot to subvert a national election" by comparison with its overzealous investigation of Clinton's emails "shows that something is deeply broken" there.

Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili told CNN Friday that he was not surprised by the US claims against Russia.

"Well I almost was, like, vindicated when the same administration in Washington suddenly started to speak about Russian involvement in the election," he said, speaking in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

***** ‘She was fired!’: CNN blows up with chatter of its own Donna Brazile


To its credit, CNN’s media-reporting team wrote a story for the company’s website on the resignation of Donna Brazile as a CNN contributor following revelations that in March she shared questions from a debate and a town-hall event with the Clinton campaign. It’s a bona fide scandal.
Yet the Erik Wemple Blog, a steady CNN watcher, hasn’t seen much coverage of Brazile’s actions on CNN airwaves.

Panel discussions, however, have a way of meandering. CNN host Brooke Baldwin moments ago convened former Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter; commentator S.E. Cupp; and Trump supporter and former George W. Bush political director Matt Schlapp to break down the last days of the 2016 presidential race. All kinds of things got attention, including the role of women in the election, the need to shake up Washington, and reports that the race is getting tight.

Reacting to analysis that the Republicans are split over Trump, Schlapp pointed out that Donna Brazile was criticized by CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker for “leak[ing] two questions to the Clinton campaign to hurt the Bernie Sanders campaign.”

A bit later in the discussion, Nutter defended Brazile, saying, “Donna Brazile is doing a fantastic job at the DNC now and prior to that as a great political strategist and TV commentator.”

Schlapp interjected: “Hillary agrees with you!”

Nutter continued: “We can talk about questions and who got what questions. You know, I think it might not have been too much of a surprise if you’re in Flint, that you might get a question from somebody about the water.”

Schlapp: “Then why was she fired?”

Nutter: “Let me finish. She was not fired.”

Schlapp: “She was fired by CNN.”

Nutter: “You can say that three times and I’m going to say three times, she resigned on her own. That is the fact, so do not spread lies about someone’s personal business or how they conducted themselves.”

Schlapp: “Hey, Brooke, can you help me out here. I’m not lying. I’m not lying.”

Baldwin: “There was some sort of termination … That is way, way higher than my pay grade, Matt. So I really can’t address it, but I can tell you that [inaudible] did not help her out.”

The facts: CNN did indeed declare publicly that Brazile had “resigned.” Journalists everywhere, including Politico’s Jack Shafer, interpreted the timing and circumstances of the move as something other than voluntary. “CNN Dumped Donna Brazile. It Should Keep Going,” reads the headline on Shafer’s piece. Add to that Baldwin’s demi-confirmation on air, plus all the context, and it appears that Schlapp was speaking the unimpeachable truth.
