In an interview with CNN’s Van Jones that aired Saturday night, Jay-Z — whose birth name is Shawn Carter — said that the numbers don’t matter.
“It’s not about money at the end of the day,” said Carter, whose net worth is estimated to be $810 million. “Money doesn’t equate to happiness. It doesn’t. That’s missing the whole point. You treat people like human beings then — that’s the main point.”
Carter also criticized the disparaging remarks Trump reportedly made about African countries during an Oval Office meeting on immigration this month.
“It is disappointing and it’s hurtful,” Carter said. “It really is hurtful, more than so … everyone feels anger. But after the anger, it’s real hurtful. It’s looking down at a whole population of people, and it’s so misinformed because these places have beautiful people and beautiful everything. This is the leader of the free world speaking like this.”
The burgeoning Mexican invasion has begun to take on many of the outward trappings of the so-called (and badly misnamed) civil rights movement of the 1960s.
This includes adopting much of the rhetoric of Martin Lucifer Koon, Jesse Jackson, Ralph Abernathy, etc. In some of the mass demonstrations which took place on May 1st, the beginning of the Aztlan Revolution, the Mexicans even carried pictures of Martin Luther King and sang "We Shall Overcome" in Spanish.
The object of the "New Civil Rights Movement" is to extort at economic gunpoint citizenship for millions of illegal Third World immigrants, and thus make sure that white people are forever outnumbered and outvoted in their own country, the country their ancestors made.
The next step, of course, will be separation from the United States and the creation of Aztlan, a Hispanic nation in the southwestern U. S. Get used to hearing that name, folks. It's going to be part of our future from now on.
But many among the artificially created black middle class which has been brought into being by affirmative action and the Democratic party are starting to become uneasy.
The blacks do have enough rudimentary intelligence to see and to understand that the great American pie is no longer limitless, and that the bigger the slice of the white man's pie that is given to the Mexicans and other illegal Third World immigrants, the smaller the slice of that pie which will be given to negroes.
The apprehension is also becoming acute among black blue collar workers who, like their white counterparts, can see with their own eyes that their jobs are being taken by $5.00 per hour illegals. Some liberals and "black intellectuals" (pardon the oxymoron) also object to the Mexicans adopting the trappings of the 1960s civil rights movement, pointing out that the Mexicans are Johnny-come-latelies to the racket.
What might be called the "classic liberal" objection to the Mexicans aping the apes, so to speak, and plagiarizing the symbols and appurtenances of the 1960s crusade, is that blacks technically speaking were American citizens after 1865.
According to the legend, they supposedly endured centuries of enslavement, rapes, lynchings and discrimination before they started marching. (In actual fact, of course, the old South under segregation was nowhere near as bad as it is pictured by liberals who want to re-write history, but that's another subject.)
In essence, the blacks are saying to the Mexicans, "We wuz here first, muddafukkas, go find you own corner." There is a large element of one gang trying to muscle in on the other's turf here. Who will end up with the biggest piece of the action, i.e. the white man's tax dollars?
The blacks or the spics? Bluntly, on a level playing field as they fight over America's carcass, my money is on the spics.
The potential for conflict between the New Civil Rights Movement and the old is the most acute in the area of low-skilled black workers who must compete with immigrants for entry-level jobs.
One thing must be conceded to the Mexicans: their first generation of immigrants that crossed the river will at least work hard.
So when an employer has $100 an hour budgeted for labor and he is faced with a choice of hiring twenty illegals who will work like ants at $5.00 an hour, or ten lazy back-talking coons at $10.00 an hour who will lie around all day smoking joints and drinking wine, who is he going to pick?

**** Discrimination suit alleges black temp workers passed over for Hispanics
group of African-American men filed a lawsuit Tuesday in Chicago federal court alleging systematic discrimination by a temporary staffing agency and several of its clients they say passed over black applicants in favor of Hispanic workers.
The lawsuit against Personnel Staffing Group, which does business as MVP Staffing, is seeking class-action status. The clients named as defendants are Blommer Chocolate Co., Segerdahl Graphics, Mercury Plastics, MPS Chicago (which does business as Jet Lithocolor), The Penray Cos., ARI Packaging and Lawrence Foods.
The alleged discrimination took place at MVP Staffing's Cicero branch office, which the lawsuit claims was directed by clients not to send African-American workers to their companies for assignments.
Those wishes allegedly were communicated using code words, according to testimony from former dispatchers and on-site representatives given in prior cases and attached to the filing as evidence. For example, according to the lawsuit, "guapos," which translates to pretty boys, would be used to refer to African-Americans to suggest they don't want to do dirty work. The terms "feos" (translated to mean "dirty ones")," "bilingues" (bilinguals) and "los que escuchan La Ley" (referring to people who listen to Spanish-language radio station La Ley) were used to refer to Hispanic laborers, the lawsuit alleges.
Christopher Williams of Workers' Law Office, one of the attorneys representing the plaintiffs, said such a model is prevalent in the fast-growing temporary staffing industry, where competition between agencies puts pressure to keep wages low.
An immigrant-dominated workforce, with language barriers and legal status concerns, is less likely to complain about failure to pay overtime, workplace injuries, wage theft or overwork, according to Williams. He described dozens of white vans that pick people up in the Little Village neighborhood, populated mostly by Mexican immigrants, and drive them to the suburbs for jobs, while black applicants will show up early at the agency office and wait all day before being told there's no work.
"They get up early, they make their way there, they get there on the promise that there might be work for them," Williams said. "And they watch as it changes from a very mixed room in the morning to mostly African-Americans left in the afternoon."
Williams, who has filed several federal discrimination lawsuits against individual companies before Tuesday's class action, said the complaints have spurred some staffing agencies to hire more African-Americans, but cultural issues inside the companies create a revolving door. Because of the emphasis on Hispanic recruiting, often the company plant managers and assembly line leaders are Hispanic as well, and "they didn't want them there," Williams said.
A person who answered the phone at MVP Staffing said no one was available to comment. None of the other companies named as defendants in the lawsuit immediately responded to requests for comment.
In Illinois, the unemployment rate among blacks, at about 14 percent, is nearly three times that of whites (5 percent) and nearly twice that of Hispanics (7.8 percent), according to a May report from the Economic Policy Institute, which at the time said Illinois had the highest black unemployment rate in the country.
Williams, who has spent most of his career focused on immigrant workers' rights, said he sees the devastation of joblessness in black communities where there are already barriers to employment, such as criminal records, that leads to "a level of desperation."
"These (temp) jobs are the entry level to the entry-level jobs," Williams said. "They would be perfect for this class of people who make up the extremely large population (of people with criminal records) and they end up being denied these jobs."
Norman Green, one of the five plaintiffs, said he has felt the discrimination at MVP and other staffing agencies in Chicago.
He described arriving at the agency early, around 4 or 5 a.m., with his steel-toe boots on and ready to work, signing his name at the top of a check-in paper. He said he would sit for hours and wait while Hispanics would arrive and be sent out to work sites right away. But the agencies would tell him to come back, he said, so he would borrow from money from friends and family to make the trip and get there early only to sit and wait again.
"A lot of black people just sitting there mad that they can't work," said Green, 33, who lives in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. When he has gotten jobs he feels everyone is talking about him in Spanish, and "it's just uncomfortable."
Green said the pattern, based on the perception that blacks don't want to work, is "clear-as-day racist" and unfairly applied to him even though "every time I walk into a temp agency I work my butt off."
Green, who has eight kids, seven of whom live with him, said he lost faith in the temp industry and instead supports his family doing construction and other manual work for family members.
In an exhibit attached to the lawsuit, former MVP dispatcher Rosa Ceja testified that she had been yelled at by representatives of client companies when she assigned African-American workers to jobs and was warned by MVP managers and owners not to send blacks because MVP could lose the account if they did.
Another MVP employee, Pamela Sanchez, who worked as an on-site manager at a bakery named in a prior lawsuit, said in an exhibit that she was instructed directly by bakery employees not to send black workers and to "DNR" (Do Not Return) them on the rare occasions she did. She said she would review lists of laborers to be sent to a shift and if a name didn't sound Hispanic, she would cancel them, even once they had already been assigned, because she knew they would be rejected. She added that she was told to have black applicants complete criminal backgrounds disclosures but not Hispanics.
Williams estimated there could be 8,000 to 10,000 potential class members for Tuesday's lawsuit.
Andrew Wells, director of workforce development at the Chicago Urban League, said he believes hiring discrimination plays "a fairly big role" in persistently high black unemployment, which he links to high crime rates.
"You see so much chaos and violence in the community, that's because you're seeing so many people not working," said Wells, who is not connected to the complaint.
Wells said spotlighting discriminatory patterns is one step toward starting conversations across sectors — government, nonprofit and private — about how to address the problem. His organization also helps people build workplace skills, buy homes, rebuild credit and start their own businesses that employ people from the community.
"People should be employed based on their ability to do the job, their talent," Wells said.
The lawsuit comes during a heightened debate over immigrant labor as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office with promises of restoring American jobs.
Williams said there are plenty of jobs for everyone as the temp industry continues to expand, but hiring needs to be fair and better reflect the population that is applying. Currently about 70 percent of the population around the Cicero office is Hispanic and 30 percent is African-American, but 98 percent of job placements go to Hispanics, he said.
"If we can shift the balance, our hope is that the jobs continue to be available to anyone in the community who wants to work," he said.

On Saturday night, the remaining Republican presidential candidates will gather in Greenville, South Carolina for their first debate since this week's New Hampshire primaries.
This will be the last debate before South Carolina's Republican primary on Feb. 20, and it will take place at the Peace Center in Greenville, from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET.
These candidates have been invited to the debate: businessman Donald Trump, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, former neurosurgeon Ben Carson, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
The candidates will face off just days after New Hampshire's nominating contest, where Trump swept the competition with 35 percent of the votes. Kasich came in second with 16 percent, Cruz finished with 12 percent. Bush and Rubio were the only other candidates to garner double-digit support, with 11 percent each.
Since the New Hampshire primaries, former tech executive Carly Fiorina, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore have withdrawn from the race.
"Face the Nation" host and CBS News political director John Dickerson will serve as the main moderator for the debate. He will be joined by two panelists: CBS News chief White House correspondent Major Garrett and The Wall Street Journal's Kimberly Strassel.

For a supposedly successful businessman, Donald Trump has remarkably little understanding of employment statistics. In fact, he often utters contradictory “facts” depending on the venue. At Liberty University, he said that the real unemployment rate is “22-23 percent,” but in the past he has asserted it was as high as 42 percent.

CNN political contributor Van Jones didn’t mince words when giving his assessment of the Democratic party ahead of their first 2016 presidential debate Tuesday night:
“I think this whole party has a problem.
This is the whitest field that we have seen since 1992. There’s no Sharpton. There’s no Carol Moseley Braun. There’s no non-white people there, and this is a party that has to get, not 60%, not 70%, not 90%, but 94% of the black vote to win.
This is a big problem for the whole party.”

Jones, a former green energy advisor in the Obama administration, went on to suggest that there’s room for the Democratic party to improve its numbers with minority voters:
“The Clintons get the black vote by default, but nobody has made a case yet that they can do better. If Biden gets in he might be able to make that case. But Bernie Sanders has so much room to grow with the black vote he should take the opportunity tomorrow to make his case why a white guy from Vermont should get the support of a party with that much black participation.”
GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson has argued that the Republican party has a lot to offer black Americans.
Carson also said the GOP is more willing to get past racism:
“I find black Republicans are treated extremely well in the Republican Party. I hear a lot about what you believe and the kind of principles you’re espousing and I think that’s far more important. I think the Republicans have done a far better job than Democrats in getting over racism.”
Star Parker, founder of CURE (Center for Urban Renewal and Education), believes the GOP should court black voters by focusing on traditional values:
“An ongoing point of contention in the Republican Party has been the extent to which clear identification with traditional Judeo-Christian values is a good idea.
My sense is that, when we add to the equation the growing impact of non-white voters, standing strongly for these traditional values — which would put Republicans in stark contrast to Democrats — would be a win-win for Republicans.”
One thing is certain: with another close election likely, both parties should realize the impact minority voters will have on determining the winner.

After KAY HAGAN was Defeated last Tuesday by her GOP Opponent THOM TILLIS, it's no surprise to hear NORTH CAROLINA'S Democratic Party Leaders blaming GOP Leaders for her loss.
Both HAGAN and TILLIS Spent more than $100 Million in a hotly debated U.S. Senate race, yet NC Democratic Party Leaders only seem to be focused on money that flowed from GOP Donors.
However the TRUTH is that NORTH CAROLINA'S Democratic Party has been in Trouble for quite some time.
Long before Nov 2010 when the GOP regained Control.
In fact were it Not for BARACK OBAMA'S Voter Tsunami in 2008, neither KAY HAGAN, nor former NC Gov BEV PERDUE would have Won, because both HAGAN and PERDUE rode OBAMA'S coattails in 2008.
So let's just briefly address some Major issues within NORTH CAROLINA'S Democratic Party:
1) All WHITE Leadership at the top but mostly BLACK Voters statewide.
2) KLU KLUX KLAN Power remains at the helms of both the NORTH CAROLINA Democratic and Republican Party.
3) Regardless of which Political Party is in Power,
BLACK Voters in NORTH CAROLINA are still Disenfranchised as it relates to Education, Unfair Taxation, lack of Small Business Opportunities, Mass Transportation, Unemployment, Criminal Justice.
Why??
4) In NORTH CAROLINA the Democratic Party wants BLACK Voters to Support Democrats, while being SILENT about everything that is keeping BLACK Voters in this State from reaching Upward Mobility.
It seems the only time Democratic Party Leaders allow BLACK Voters to "Speak Out" is when it's time for another ELECTION.
5) Each time a BLACK Citizen in NORTH CAROLINA dares to step up for Statewide Leadership positions, they are knocked back down to earth by WHITE Democratic Party Leadership or Hammered by the NORTH CAROLINA Media Until those BLACK Citizens give up any Hope of ever achieving Statewide Democratic Party Leadership in NORTH CAROLINA.
MARCO RUBIO'S "WAR ON POVERTY" REFORM vs OBAMA'S "PROMISE ZONES": WHERE ARE THE JOBS??
This week U.S. Senator MARCO RUBIO (R-FL) delivered a response to Pres OBAMA'S recent Anti-Poverty Speech aka "PROMISE ZONES".
I agree with MARCO RUBIO on the subject of ERADICATING POVERTY more so than Pres OBAMA.
Sort of.....
Why??
Because from 2009 to 2013, Pres OBAMA'S Economic Policies appear to have contributed to POVERTY in America.
From his STIMULUS Legislation which was intentionally passed through CONGRESS with RACIALLY Divisive guidelines, to his administration sending more JOBS overseas (DETROIT)........
It's quite clear Pres OBAMA'S Economic Policies have in fact contributed to lingering High U.S. Unemployment numbers.
I am in NO way Opposed to the Federal Gov't offering some level of Assistance to help LIFT People out of POVERTY but we must remember that PEOPLE NEED JOBS NOT JUST HAND-OUTS FROM THE GOVERNMENT!
PEOPLE ALSO NEED FAIR OPPORTUNITIES TO CREATE SMALL BUSINESSES SO THEY CAN BECOME JOB CREATORS.
However........
For MARCO RUBIO to suggest CONGRESS should leave the act of ERADICATING POVERTY solely to Governors & State Legislators as the only Solution to helping LIFT Poor Citizens out of a cycle of POVERTY, is in itself Politically NAIVE.
What about States with with a long history of RACISM & SEGREGATION??
For example: ARKANSAS, GEORGIA, LOUISIANA, TEXAS, SOUTH CAROLINA, NORTH CAROLINA, FLORIDA??
If the Federal Gov't does NOT step in and FORCE those States to help LIFT Poor BLACK & LATINO Citizens out of POVERTY via Fair OPPORTUNITIES, those Citizens will remain in POVERTY Forever.
So what's the Solution??
Both CONGRESS & State Lawmakers must work together to help ERADICATE 21ST CENTURY POVERTY.
The Solution must NOT stem from POLITICS & Winning Elections!

Sen. Marco Rubio on Wednesday proposed a sweeping overhaul of the nation's anti-poverty programs, arguing that for decades Washington has been too fixed on dealing with poverty's consequences rather than its causes.
The Florida Republican suggested giving federal funds to states so they could devise ways to combat poverty.
"Five decades and trillions of dollars after President Johnson waged his 'War on Poverty,' the results of this big-government approach are in," Rubio said on the 50th anniversary of the day Johnson first declared his goal for government help to the poor.
"Our anti-poverty programs should be replaced with a revenue-neutral flex fund," Rubio argued. "We would streamline most of our existing federal anti-poverty funding into one single agency."
Each year, the flex funds would go to states "so they can design and fund creative initiatives that address the factors behind inequality of opportunity."
Meanwhile, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), the chairman of the House Budget Committee and Mitt Romney's running mate in 2012, is expected to discuss poverty in an interview Thursday with NBC's Brian Williams.
Rubio offered no list as to what programs would be involved in his initiative, other than perhaps the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps.
The senator also proposed replacing the earned income tax credit, a popular break for lower- and moderate-income workers, with a "federal wage enhancement for qualifying low-wage jobs."
Someone with a lower-paying job would also get a federal benefit, paid at the same time as the monthly paycheck. The amount, Rubio said, "will depend on a range of factors."
Rubio's address to a group of experts and reporters at the Capitol's Lyndon B. Johnson Room was a marquee event during a day of reflection and speeches over how to tackle poverty.
The poverty rate was 15% in 2012, down slightly from the mid-1960s. Critics charge the change has been negligible and expensive. Supporters say the rate could be higher if not for the expansion of safety net programs.
Partisan divisions over how to proceed were clear Wednesday.
"We created new avenues of opportunity through jobs and education, expanded access to health care for seniors, the poor, and Americans with disabilities, and helped working families make ends meet," President Barack Obama said in a statement.
At the Capitol, Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., told the Senate that 50 years ago Johnson identified poverty as "a national problem. And that's why he made it a national priority."
"So I think we ought to rededicate ourselves today to that national priority," said Murray, who chairs the Senate Budget Committee.
The nation is emerging from a deep recession, and unemployment in November was 7%, its lowest level in five years. The divide between rich and poor remains stark, triggering a flood of recent promises from the White House and congressional leaders to work to narrow the gap.
Rubio is one of three Republican senators mentioned as a possible 2016 presidential candidate talking about new approaches to government help for the poor.
Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky is promoting "economic freedom zones," which would provide tax breaks for companies and workers in high unemployment areas.
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas urged several steps he said would reduce inequality, including repealing the Affordable Care Act, expanding energy production and stopping "abusive regulations that are hammering small businesses."
Rubio, like other Republicans on Wednesday, first offered compassion and empathy for the poor. He explained how lower-income Americans today are plagued by a lack of lower-skilled jobs.
"The jobs that have replaced the low- and middle-skill jobs of the past pay more," he said. "But they require a high level of professional, technical or management skills. And we simply have too many people who have never acquired the education needed to attain those skills."
The solution does not lie in dictates from Washington, he contended.
"Our current president and his liberal allies propose that we address this by spending more on these failed programs and increasing the minimum wage to $10.10," he noted. "Really? That is their solution to what President Obama has identified as the defining issue of our time?"
The Rubio approach contains two long-held Republican philosophies: Give the private sector an opportunity to thrive by removing regulatory burdens and unfair taxes and give the states more flexibility.
The plan is similar to the overhaul of the nation's welfare system in 1996, when states got more responsibility to reduce dependence on government aid.

Overall unemployment remained at 8.2 percent in June, but the jobless rate for African-Americans increased by almost a point to 14.4 percent, the Department of Labor announced Friday in its monthly employment report.
The unemployment rate of 8.2 percent suggests the economic surge that seemed to be happening earlier in the year has largely stalled. In the first three months of the year, the economy grew by an average of more than 200,000 jobs a month, compared to less than half that from April-June.
At the same time, the picture is much better than a year ago, when the jobless rate was 9.1 percent.
The increase in the black jobless rate will raise concerns, because other demographic groups did not show similar surges in unemployment. Unemployment among whites is 7.4 percent and 11.0 percent among Hispanics.
Black unemployment was 13.6 percent in May. The black jobless rate is traditionally double that of the rate among whites, but the rate in the last three years has been historically high.
“There are some fluctuations in the employment statistics for blacks, but essentially for blacks as well as the rest of the country, the economy is in a holding pattern,” said Algeron Austin, director of the Race, Ethnicity and the Economy program at the Washington-based Economic Policy Institute. “We haven’t seen any real significant change for the first half of the year.”
Politically, the report presents a challenge for President Obama, who is on a two-day campaign bus tour of Ohio and Pennsylvania. No modern president has won reelection with a jobless rate higher than 7.4 percent, but it is increasingly unlikely the unemployment will dip below that number by November.
Republicans in Congress said the report showed the president’s policies aren’t working.
“This crawling pace is not enough to get the millions of Americans who are unemployed back to work or provide long-term growth. We’ve seen month after month of dismal jobs numbers,” said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.”
White House officials noted that economic growth is continuing, even as they acknowledged that challenges remain.
“The economy has now added private sector jobs for 28 straight months, for a total of 4.4 million payroll jobs during that period. Employment is growing but it is not growing fast enough given the jobs deficit caused by the deep recession,” said Alan Krueger, chairman of the White House’s Council of Economic Advisers.
President Barack Obama downplayed a weak jobs report Friday as he wrapped up a two-day bus tour to critical states in the November election, while Republicans pounced on the news to declare the president's policies have failed.
Stock prices plunged on the report that the economy created 80,000 jobs in June, well below the number needed to bring down the 8.2% unemployment rate.
At a campaign event in Poland, Ohio, Obama said the job growth -- while smaller than needed -- continued a trend that has added 4.4 million jobs in the past 28 months following what he called "the worst economic crisis of our lifetime."
"That's a step in the right direction," Obama contended.
Republicans, however, called the weak growth a result of Obama policies that don't work.
Certain GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney called the jobs figures a "kick in the gut for middle-class families," blaming Obama's policies for continued high unemployment and saying it was "time for Americans to choose whether they want more of the same."
"His policies have not worked," Romney said at a brief news conference in New Hampshire, where he is vacationing with his family.
Referring to more than three years of unemployment higher than 8%, Romney said "the evidence is in, again and again and again" and added that the continuing high unemployment rate "pretty much defines lack of success."
Other Republican leaders echoed Romney's remarks, with House Speaker John Boehner taking a jab at Obama's comment last month that when compared to public sector job creation, the private sector was "doing fine."
"Today's report shows the private sector clearly isn't 'doing fine' and that President Obama's policies have
failed," Boehner, R-Ohio, said in a statement. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus' statement said, "The Obama economy is defined by chronically high unemployment."
Also Friday, an independent group co-founded by conservative operative Karl Rove said it was launching a new ad targeting what it claimed were Obama's excuses for the bad economy.
Crossroads GPS said the spot was the first wave of a $25 million ad buy starting July 10 and running through early August in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia -- all swing states that both Democrats and Republicans will heavily contest in the presidential election.
In speeches in Ohio and Pennsylvania to conclude the bus tour, Obama referred to the negative ads by Republicans and told supporters not to get discouraged.
"You'll hear the same thing from them over and over again, because they know that their economic theory isn't going to sell," the president told a Pittsburgh event.
"So all they've got to argue is the economy's not moving as fast as it needs to.
Jobs aren't growing as fast as they need to. And it's all Obama's fault. That's basically their only message."
Obama briefly mentioned the new jobs report in Ohio and didn't refer to it specifically in Pittsburgh.
Instead, his full-fledged campaign speeches emphasized restoring opportunity for the middle class, in contrast to what he characterized as Republican policies that favor corporations and the wealthy.
In Ohio, Obama joked with the crowd, kissed at least one baby and outlined his vision of middle-class opportunity while making sure to note his administration's help in reviving the U.S. auto industry, which is big in the state.
He rebuffed GOP criticism that his policies are wrong, blaming political stalemate in Washington for the failure by Congress to pass needed job creation measures he has endorsed, such as ending tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas.
"This election is about how we break that stalemate," Obama said. "It's in your power to break the stalemate."
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, meanwhile, accused congressional Republicans of obstructing economic progress by focusing on partisan politics, such as a planned House vote next week to repeal the health care reform law in what would be a purely symbolic gesture.
"It's time for Republicans to abandon their agenda of obstruction and delay, and work with Democrats to create jobs and strengthen the middle class," said a statement by Pelosi, D-California.
Republicans accuse Democrats of similar tactics against measures passed by the GOP-majority House that have died in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
However, former Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman publicly criticized his party Friday for failing to focus "on a bigger, bolder, more confident future for the United States -- future based on problem solving, inclusiveness, and a willingness to address the trust deficit, which is every bit as corrosive as our fiscal and economic deficits."
In a statement announcing he won't attend the GOP convention in August, Huntsman called for "a return to the party we have been in the past, from Lincoln right on through to Reagan, that was always willing to put our country before politics."
After Obama returns to Washington on Friday afternoon, he will sign a giant transportation bill that includes funding for road and bridge construction and repairs -- a component of Obama's jobs plan that Congress passed last week as part of a package that included holding down interest rates on federal student loans.
Both components were top priorities for Obama and passed after lengthy negotiations in Congress that were delayed by partisan posturing.
All polling so far shows a tight race between Obama and Romney, and that voters consider the economy the top issue.
Obama contends the economy continues to show slow growth after the deep recession he inherited, while Romney argues the president's policies deter job creation.
In his remarks Friday, Romney specified what he called excessive corporate taxes and regulatory burdens as the main culprits.
"The president's policies have not got America working again," Romney said. "The president's going to have to stand up and take responsibility for it."
Obama, however, said the policies espoused by Romney and Republicans -- such as cutting taxes and removing regulations -- failed under the Bush administration and only would help the rich get richer while keeping the middle class stagnant or worse.
"We saw us fighting two wars on a credit card," Obama said of what happened before he took office.
"The tax cuts turned a surplus into a deficit and the lack of regulation resulted in what happened on Wall Street and we ended up with the biggest crisis we have ever seen. It ain't right. It is not a smart theory."
At the heart of the issue are the differing philosophies of the two parties, with Obama and Democrats advocating a combination of strategic spending, increased revenue and entitlement reforms to reduce budget deficits and the national debt while Romney and Republicans focus on shrinking government.
Health care reform also has emerged as a major point of contention, especially after last week's Supreme Court ruling that upheld the signature legislation of Obama's presidency so far.
The Romney campaign has been dogged by conflicting stances on the issue, which is a vulnerability for the former Massachusetts governor who implemented a similar plan in the state but now calls for repeal of the federal law known as Obamacare.
GOP leaders emphasized that the high court ruling that the law's most controversial section -- the individual mandate requiring people to have health insurance -- amounted to a kind of tax was evidence that Obama deceived the nation in 2009 by denying it was a tax increase.
However, a top Romney adviser -- seeking to protect the candidate from Democratic charges that he implemented a similar tax increase in Massachusetts -- insisted that the individual mandate was not a tax but a penalty, as argued by Obama.
Romney then had to declare publicly that the Supreme Court ruling means the mandate is a tax, but added more confusion by making clear he disagreed with the high court decision.
Obama kept up the pressure on Romney on the issue, assailing him in an interview airing Friday for reversing his position on the penalty provision.
A short portion of the interview was distributed by Obama's campaign early Friday.
The remainder of the interview with WLWT-TV in Cincinnati was not immediately available.
Romney "was one of the biggest promoters of the individual mandate," Obama said in the interview. "In Massachusetts, his whole idea was that we shouldn't have people who can afford to get health insurance to not buy it and then force you or me, or John Q. Public to have to pay for him when he gets sick."
Now, Obama said, Romney's reversal from "penalty" to "tax" raises the question of "are you doing that because of politics?"
"Are you abandoning a principle that you fought for, for six years simply because you're getting pressure for two days from Rush Limbaugh or some critics in Washington?" Obama said.
Romney's campaign responded that Obama "told the American people that Obamacare was not a new tax, then sent his lawyers to convince the Supreme Court that it was a new tax, and now is insisting -- again -- that it is not a tax."
"Americans deserve straight answers from their president," a campaign statement said.
When asked about the issue, Romney said Friday that he always maintained that health care should be managed at the state level, like his program in Massachusetts, rather than at the federal level under Obamacare.
Obama's solicitor general argued before the Supreme Court in March that the individual mandate could be viewed as constitutional under Congress' taxation power.
Donald Verrilli said the fee would be collected by the Internal Revenue Service on April 15, the day Americans pay their federal income taxes.
Asked by Associate Justice Samuel Alito "can the mandate be viewed as a tax?" Verrilli responded, "I think it could."
In his speech at the Ohio school, Obama raised the issue again, saying to cheers that including the individual mandate with its penalty provision was the right thing to do.

Mitt Romney pulled in more money than President Obama in May, further shaking a White House race that is shaping up to be a nail-biter.
Romney and the Republicans hauled in $76.8 million last month, far more than the $60 million raised by Obama and the Democrats.
This is the first time that Romney has outraised the incumbent and it comes as national polls show the race tightening dramatically as the economy continues to sputter.
Both men’s May total significantly outpaced what they raised in April.
For Romney, it was the first month when - as the clear GOP nominee - he was able to jointly raise money with the Republican National Committee.
"Our strong fundraising is a sign that Americans are tired of President Obama’s broken promises and want a change of direction in the White House," RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said.
Obama’s haul - a significant jump from the $43.6 million he and the Democrats raised last month - was in large part attributed in part to his support of same-sex marriage.
Obama announced the total over Twitter.
“The campaign raised more than $60 million across committees in May,” the President said. “Thanks to everyone who chipped in.”
Obama’s total including donations came from 572,000 people and 147,000 first-time donors - many of whom opened their wallets after the President became the first occupant of the White House to endorse same-sex marriage.
The total was also boosted by a record $15 million raised at a fundraiser at George Clooney’s Los Angeles home.
The average donation to the President’s re-election bid during May was $54.94, continuing the Obama campaign’s success of wooing small donors.
By the end of April, 43% of Obama’s donors gave $200 or less, according to a study by the Campaign Finance Institute, a Washington research group.
Meanwhile, only 10% of those who gave to Romney during that period made donations of less than $200, pointing to the Republican’s reliance on fat-cat donors.
However, Romney had more success with the small donors in May, as his campaign boasted that 93% of gifts received that month were less than $250.
Obama now has raised approximately $277 million so far this year while Romney has totaled about $175 million. However, Romney is also expected to wield a significant advantage in money raised by the parties’ respective Super PACs.
Both men have aggressively hit the fundraising circuit in recent weeks, stockpiling cash in advance of what will likely be the most expensive election in history.
Obama and Romney have each criss-crossed the country, venturing into friendly and enemy territory alike to raise money.
Romney just completed a two-day trek through Texas that was expected to rake in $15 million.
Meanwhile, Obama hit four fundraisers in California - including one with a gay group - Wednesday and has one more scheduled for Thursday morning before he departs for Las Vegas to give a speech on jobs.
The fundraising totals continues a difficult stretch for Obama, who has been left reeling by a series of disappointing economic news.

Pat McCrory: I just want to let you know as I’ve not only got a chance to travel across this state, but I’ve also had the opportunity to meet a lot of Governors throughout the United States of America. There’s no doubt in my mind in observing Governor Christie, Governor Mitch Daniels and Governor Jindal and other Governors throughout the United States, it’s Governors who – I think – who are initiating policy which will help get our nation out of this very, very deep recession.
And North Carolina, of course, is feeling this recession with the fourth highest unemployment rate in the nation.
But, another Governor that has actually been a mentor to many of those existing Governors and a mentor of mine is Governor Jeb Bush of Florida. And I have been watching not only his leadership as a Governor but also his leadership since being Governor.
And he clearly understands many areas – especially two. And that is how to create jobs and also how to reform education.
And I am using his advice during this past year and I actually used it as Mayor of Charlotte also in getting his input on ideas on both economic development and education. And Jeb Bush has become very much of an expert in the area of reforming education and not accepting the incredible high dropout rates that we see in states throughout the United States of America.
Both Governor Bush and I clearly understand that we must reform and change education so we can get our kids to learn the basics and then get good quality higher education or vocational education in addition to getting a job. And right now so many of our kids who are graduating aren’t getting jobs and we have over 20% of our children who are clearly not even graduating from our high schools in North Carolina. And this is clearly unacceptable.
And that’s one of the reasons I have a great partnership and I appreciate Governor Bush’s endorsement of our candidacy because we both firmly believe in reforming education. And I’m going to take many ideas that he has initiated in Florida, both as a current Governor and a former Governor and bring them to North Carolina so we can improve the outcomes of our education and our major investments in education.
So with that, I welcome Governor Bush to say a few words and then we’ll answer a few questions. Thank you very much.
Governor Jeb Bush: Thank you, Mayor. It is a joy to be here, to endorse your candidacy, and to provide whatever support I can for that cause. Governor’s lead. The final weeks of statewide general elections in North Carolina are usually marked by perceived shadowy third-party groups spending big money to soak the airwaves with television commercials and campaigns suing or threatening to sue over an ad that strikes a nerve.
That all got a head start in 2012.
The governor's race didn't let up after the May 8 primary christened Democratic Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton and Republican Pat McCrory as nominees. National governors' groups already have been recognized for more than $1.4 million in TV ads designed to negatively portray the opposing candidate.
McCrory's campaign and political committees favoring Dalton filed competing lawsuits over one commercial last week. McCrory, the former Charlotte mayor, called the ad "garbage." Dalton, while pointing out the ad wasn't produced by his campaign, retorted the commercial "checks out by fact pretty well."
Add the millions of dollars in presidential ads already being dropped on North Carolina and loosened campaign finance restrictions nationwide, and the old political adage that Labor Day marks the beginning of the fall political season sounds old-fashioned.
Make that Memorial Day.
"In the past, there's been a little hiatus after the primaries," said Carter Wrenn, a Republican campaign consultant who worked for years with the late U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms' political organization. This year, he added, "they just put the pedal to the metal."
The early overall surge in television advertising in North Carolina is attributed to the state being considered competitive again in the presidential race. President Barack Obama narrowly won in North Carolina in 2008, ending a GOP winning streak dating to 1980. Holding the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte highlights Obama's interest in retaining North Carolina's 15 electoral votes.
Wrenn said North Carolina didn't become a battleground state until later in the 2008 election season. This time, he said, "we're kind of at a different status then we've ever been before."
North Carolina TV viewers already are hearing from the campaigns of Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney, as well as from a new kind of political action committee. The so-called "super PAC," born following a 2010 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, can receive unlimited amounts of money from corporations and individuals.
In May, the Obama campaign launched a $25 million ad buy running in North Carolina and six other states. The GOP-leading super PAC Crossroads GPS, which is advertising against Obama in North Carolina and nine other states, quickly matched that amount. The Romney campaign also said it was spending $1.3 million in four states, including North Carolina, on a TV ad.
The Supreme Court's "Citizens United" ruling will make TVs even more congested with political commercials than they would have been, said Gene Nichol, a professor at the University of North Carolina law school.
"We're all going to become so sick of watching TV and the commercials that spew forth that people will just beg for the election to be over," said Nichol, a former Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in Colorado.
Eight statewide or congressional primary runoffs set for July 17 will keep politics in the news. Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue's decision not to seek re-election also has intensified the campaign to succeed her.
The Republican Governors Association spent $5.6 million in 2008 working unsuccessfully for McCrory to defeat Perdue, but it didn't start spending that year until September. This year, it got on the air a week after the primary and began to label Dalton as Perdue's "right-hand man."
Two RGA ads have tried to join Dalton and Perdue at the hip and highlight their support for raising the sales tax by three-quarters of a cent. The sales tax revenue would go to public education.
As of last week, the RGA had spent $1.3 million in North Carolina, according to campaign finance reports. More than $1 million was for TV spots, RGA spokesman Mike Schrimpf said.
"North Carolina is one of our most important pickup opportunities," Schrimpf said Friday.
On the day the RGA ran its first ad, the Democratic Governors Association gave $1 million to North Carolina Citizens for Progress. The Raleigh-based independent political group spent more than $430,000 on commercials questioning McCrory's ethics. They suggest McCrory lobbied for Charlotte-based real estate and lending business Tree.com while mayor. McCrory is now on the Tree.com board and has received fees and stock options.
McCrory pounced on N.C. Citizens for Progress last week, and his lawyers sent letters asking TV stations to stop running a commercial they say is false. McCrory has never been a registered lobbyist for Tree.com, but N.C. Citizens for Progress says the ad is factual.
The DGA and N.C. Citizens sued McCrory and his campaign committee and threatened to depose McCrory before November. McCrory's campaign began litigation against DGA and N.C. Citizens.
Bob Hall, executive director of the campaign finance group Democracy North Carolina, said organizations such as the DGA, RGA and N.C. Citizens have more leeway since the Citizens United ruling to directly support or oppose candidates in television ads. They also have a greater pool of donors compared to 2008. The two candidates have no direct way to rein in the outside groups.
Hall said the early influx of ads is an early taste for voters until Election Day: "This is the harbinger of what's to come."
Pat McCrory's campaign and the political committees behind a television commercial McCrory says is false filed competing legal actions that raise the ante in North Carolina's gubernatorial race.
The Democratic Governors Association and the group North Carolina Citizens for Progress filed a complaint in Wake County court asking a judge to rule the commercial about McCrory's connections to a Charlotte-based business as true and constitutionally protected.
The complaint, which names McCrory and his campaign as defendants, was filed Thursday morning, hours before the Pat McCrory Committee initiated civil action against the two groups. It has until mid-June to file its complaint, according to the paperwork.
"I think they were bluffing. We're calling their bluff," Michael Weisel, attorney for N.C. Citizens for Progress, said Friday.
McCrory and his campaign also have been threatening lawsuits against TV stations that air the ad, which started last week, and asked the Federal Communications Commission to get involved. McCrory is most angry about an accusation that he lobbied for real estate and lending business Tree.com while mayor of Charlotte and three years before he joined the company's board.
"It's a total lie and misrepresentation of the facts. It is deceiving, it's deceptive," McCrory said. "We're going to challenge these ads that are unfactual and that are character assassinations."
Weisel suggested that he would seek to question McCrory under oath in the weeks before what's expected to be a competitive election with Democratic nominee Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton.
"The facts contained within the ad are absolutely accurate. We stand by them," he said. "There's a past history of perhaps making threats of lawsuits and then not actually doing so because it has its desired effect, which is to intimidate the press and your political opponents, their campaigns."
The competing litigation comes less than three weeks since Dalton and McCrory won their respective primaries. The DGA and the Republican Governors Association have spent more than $1.4 million combined on advertising since then.
The RGA began running another ad Friday, seeking to firm up Dalton's policy ties to Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue, who isn't seeking re-election.
Perdue is the vice chairwoman of the DGA and is listed as a likely defendant in the McCrory's campaign lawsuit.
McCrory said he's never been a registered lobbyist for Tree.com. The 2006 letter McCrory wrote as mayor and cited in the ad asked the state commerce secretary to boost state economic incentives to discourage LendingTree, a Tree.com business, from going to South Carolina.
N.C. Citizens for Progress produced the ad but the Democratic Governors Association paid for it. Campaign finance reports show N.C. Citizens have spent more than $430,000 on its ad campaign. The commercial has been airing on Triangle, Triad and Down East television stations.
The group has made some changes to the attack ad, and the latest version clarifies the timeline of events. They said it makes the ad stronger, but the lawsuit still goes on.
McCrory's campaign said Friday the legal matters would be handled by the lawyers and that McCrory is focused on the economy and who is best prepared to be governor.
"We're not going to be sidetracked with a back and forth with a third-party group," campaign spokesman Brian Nick said.
Dalton's campaign lit into McCrory, saying his public pledge Thursday to run fair campaign ads this election rang hollow as the RGA ran another ad accusing Dalton of voting repeatedly for higher taxes while in the state Senate. The RGA has spent more $1 million on running a pair of anti-Dalton ads this month, RGA spokesman Mike Schrimpf said.
"For McCrory to stand before the media and call for a clean campaign on the same day that his political hatchet men launch yet another misleading attack is a new low," Dalton spokesman Ford Dalton said.
Nick said the RGA ads are based on voting records, not attacking someone's character.
Campaign rules prevent third-party groups from coordinating activities with candidate committees.
As the McCrory and Dalton campaigns blast away at each other, Libertarian candidate Barbara Howe planned to quietly launch her gubernatorial campaign on Saturday. The Granville County homemaker has run for governor twice before.
