Pres. Obama To Sign Sweeping Anti-Smoking Bill Today In Rose Garden

MSNBC----

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is set to sign into law an anti-smoking bill that will give the federal government unprecedented authority to regulate tobacco.

Obama is scheduled to sign the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act on Monday. The law allows the regulatory Food and Drug Administration to reduce nicotine in tobacco products, ban candy flavorings and block labels such "low tar" and "light." Tobacco companies also will be required to cover their cartons with large graphic warnings.

The law won't let the FDA ban nicotine or tobacco outright, but the agency will be able to regulate the contents of tobacco products, make public their ingredients and prohibit marketing campaigns, especially those geared toward children.

Anti-smoking advocates looked forward to the bill after years of attempts to tame an industry so fundamental to the U.S. that carved tobacco leaves adorn some parts of the Capitol.

Opponents from tobacco-growing states argued that the FDA has proven through a series of food safety failures that it's not up to the job. They also said that instead of unrealistically trying to get smokers to quit or to prevent others from starting, lawmakers should ensure that people have other options, like smokeless tobacco.

As president, George W. Bush opposed the legislation and threatened a veto after it passed the House last year. The Obama administration, by contrast, issued a statement declaring strong support for the measure.

Obama has spoken publicly of his own struggles to quit cigarettes.

How Do The Obamas Stay So Fit? The Obama "Balanced Diet"

Politico----

Until Michelle Obama writes a mega-selling diet book — be it “First Ladies Don’t Get Fat” or “The South Lawn Diet” — two questions loom: What do the Obamas eat at home, and how do they stay so thin?

No idle questions, these. Health care policy is dominating Capitol Hill at a time when a sports-loving president has set an example of fitness and a svelte first lady has revived the notion of the backyard vegetable garden. Yet the first couple often publicly enjoy hearty servings of not-so-healthful food — and allow their daughters to indulge, too. Little wonder that the blog Obama Foodorama, run by Eddie Gehman Kohan, has been overwhelmed with interest in the presidential meal plan. “People just don’t know how to eat — and don’t know what to eat in order not to be fat. They are looking to the Obamas like, ‘How did you do this?’” said Kohan.

Nutrition experts, too, say Americans need a much better glimpse of what’s being dished up behind the gates of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. “We have no idea what their regular breakfasts, lunches and dinners are like,” said American Dietetic Association spokeswoman and D.C. nutritionist Katherine Tallmadge. “Burgers, that’s all I ever hear about. They go to burger joints because it shows they’re just like everybody else, but everybody else is overweight.”

That’s not exactly an exaggeration: Nearly two-thirds of all adults over age 20 are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. What’s worse, American adults are less likely to perceive themselves as overweight than they were 10 years ago, even though obesity rates increased substantially during the same period, according to a new study by economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and Florida State University. “People base their perception of themselves on what’s average for the people around them, and that average has increased over time,” said Reserve Bank economist Mary Burke. “There are more overweight people out there who no longer think they are overweight, and that’s cause for concern.”

If the Obamas have a diet secret, it is that they’ve achieved the elusive “balanced” lifestyle — a concept that has been preached for years by health secretaries, doctors and even the fast-food, candy and beverage industries.

The first couple fit in early-morning workout sessions before the day begins, and the president is known to play basketball. A vegetable garden has been planted on the White House grounds, where daughters Sasha and Malia play on their swing set and run about with the first dog, Bo.

And as a result, they can afford some high-calorie indulgence. In a London restaurant earlier this month, Malia and Sasha ordered a cheese platter and battered fish and chips, and they drank Pepsi, according to reports. The first lady ordered a sirloin steak and wine. And yes, there are the presidential runs to Ben’s Chili Bowl, Five Guys and Ray’s Hell Burger.

“We try not to do diets, as opposed to just change our lifestyle,” White House chef Sam Kass said in a White House video earlier this month. “A diet means you’re inherently going to fall off of it.”

On the policy side, striking a balance between government intervention on America’s waistlines and motivating by example may be more difficult. Some health experts say that sections of America could be resistant to Obama’s policies, especially if his family eating habits swing too far from that of the average Joe, an unpleasant intrusion for the palates of a nation that invented the Luther Burger — a bacon cheeseburger squeezed between a grilled Krispy Kreme doughnut.

The White House has seemingly acknowledged that Americans need some leadership in the kitchen — if not outright hand-holding. Obama’s Health and Human Services Department appointments so far have favored officials who have helped slap calorie counts on menus and imposed aggressive smoking bans. But that approach could encourage Americans to depend on the government for their weight control, according to Center for Consumer Freedom senior research analyst J. Justin Wilson. “He’s been fair in talking about physical activity — calories in versus calories out. Yet with these appointments, it seems to me he’s suggesting that obesity is a government problem.”

The politics of food and willpower is often a tough act for politicians. Americans love sharing their tastiest morsels with elected officials — and it’s hard to pass up spending time with constituents at diners, apple pie festivals and hometown fair BBQ stands.

“The pressure for politicians to eat like the common guy is part of the human condition. Eating with someone means connecting by sharing their kind of food,” said Tufts University nutrition associate professor Parke Wilde. “You can’t refuse to participate in the way most people eat.”

On the campaign trail, Obama ate his share of pie — or at least talked about how much he loves it. But he wasn’t without foodie missteps. The press famously bemoaned Obama’s perceived lack of connection with rural voters in 2007 when he asked an Iowa farm crowd if anyone had “gone into Whole Foods lately and seen what they charge for arugula.”

For the Obama administration, simply finding a delicate way to highlight the nation’s waistline expansion while avoiding the holier-than-thou image of a thin president wagging his finger at the fat populace won’t be easy. But the lesson of moderation may be best communicated through the family’s failings, rather than its perfections. “People don’t all perceive him as a health perfectionist. As someone who already struggles with a health decision — smoking — that sets him apart,” said MeMe Roth, founder of National Action Against Obesity. “He has to come across as health conscious, not a foodie.”

Michelle Obama Continues To Teach Children About Organic Gardening....Ignores Critics

Politico-----

Michelle Obama entertained some fifth-grade students from Washington’s Bancroft Elementary School at a late lunch Tuesday in the first lady’s garden. It was a harvest celebration, with ingredients from the kitchen garden the children helped get started in March, coming back in April to plant the seeds.

Kids, gardens, seeds and organic vegetables would normally make for a pretty safe and innocuous White House event, even given today’s hothouse atmosphere in the nation’s capital. But the symbolic importance of an organic garden on the South Lawn, visible from the iron fence on E Street, has blossomed in ways no one could have expected. It has not only spurred many to have their own home garden — it has also clearly put a scare into conventional agriculture, which has fought back.

Obama’s stated purpose — to highlight the importance of a healthful diet for children and how much easier it is to get children to eat from their least favorite food group, vegetables, when produce is just out of the ground — was quickly transposed upon a much larger playing field.

No sooner had the garden been announced than a letter addressed to Mrs. Barack Obama arrived at the East Wing from an organization that represents companies selling chemical pesticides and fertilizers. The Mid America CropLife Association, an agribusiness media group, urged the first lady to give conventional agriculture equal time. Referring to chemicals the group euphemistically called “crop protection products,” the letter said not only are such nonorganic techniques necessary, but their safety is also “supported by sound scientific research and innovation.”

To be sure that Obama got the message that she should be using synthetic pesticides in the garden, the association began an online letter-writing campaign.

The White House never responded.

But the blogosphere has had a field day with the letter. And it was nothing compared with the fun Jon Stewart had on “The Daily Show.”

Stewart’s mischievous staff persuaded a spokesman for the American Council on Science and Health, a group that accepts corporate funding from Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s and PepsiCo and generally sides with industries’ positions on health and environmental hazards, to be interviewed about the White House garden. The correspondent: comedian Samantha Bee.

In the recent segment, titled “Little Crop of Horrors,” the narrator said that “this seemingly harmless, 20-by-50-foot token gesture has created a firestorm.”

Bee interviewed Jeffrey Stier, associate director of the council, who referred to the Obamas as “organic limousine liberals.”

“I think the Obama garden should come with a warning label,” he continued. “It’s irresponsible to tell people that you should have to eat organic and locally grown food. Not everyone can afford that. That’s a serious public health concern.”

His reasoning: “People are going to eat fewer fruits and vegetables. Cancer rates will go up. Obesity rates will go up. I think if we decide to eat only locally grown food, we’re going to have a lot of starvation.”

Starvation and obesity simultaneously.

Referring to Alice Waters’ Edible Schoolyard — a program founded by the famous organic chef that brings gardens to inner-city schools, where children learn to maintain a garden and to cook and eat from it — Bee sardonically added fuel to the fire: “Programs like the Edible Schoolyard are already sowing seeds of starvation, obesity.”

The American Council on Science and Health has its supporters. But they appear to be outnumbered by people who think a garden might help them save money in bad economic times, who are worried about what the chemicals in food are doing to their children.

People have been planting vegetable gardens in numbers not seen in decades. A huge spike in home vegetable gardens had already begun in 2007, and the number increased even more in 2008. But after the White House garden was announced, the numbers jumped again, according to Gardener’s Supply Co., a company in Burlington, Vt., that has an extensive online business.

The company saw a 30 percent increase in search engine traffic, with people going to its website and searching for “how to start a vegetable garden,” “planning a garden,” “raised-bed gardening” and “organic vegetable gardening.”

The company’s Kitchen Garden Planner saw a 25 percent increase in unique site visits that same weekend.

Its gardening hot line recorded more than triple its usual volume of 120 calls the week of the announcement. The following week, there was another spike.

There is considerable anecdotal evidence that accompanies the statistics.

The president of W. Atlee Burpee Seed Co. said that since the garden was announced, he has been fighting off interviewers.

“Before, I could never get an interview, even by begging, but now I’ve been interviewed over 100 times,” said George Ball, who said he stopped counting when he got to 100.

One of the best parts of gardening is the harvest; better still is eating it. On Tuesday, the children helped the first lady harvest camera-ready greens for a salad with honey dressing and sugar-sweet peas that were served with crispy baked chicken and brown rice, followed by cupcakes topped with garden berries. But then Obama summed up the political importance of the garden and its relationship to health care reform and the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act, which determines what goes into the meals served to children at school.

“Today is really the culmination of a lot of really hard work,” Obama told the schoolkids. “This is our reward.”

She also reiterated the importance of healthful food in reducing chronic illnesses like heart disease and diabetes, which cost the country $120 billion a year.

In her efforts to promote healthier eating, FLOTUS said: “I want you guys to continue to be my little ambassadors.”

Michelle Obama Visits Her "Gardening Buddies" At Bancroft Elementary School

It was just a couple of months ago that First Lady Michelle Obama invited several fifth students from Bancroft Elementary in Washington, DC to assist her in planting and cultivating a vegetable garden at the White House.

Her garden project had a two-fold purpose: 1) Inspire the children to include healthy fruits and vegetables in their diet, 2) Encourage them to help provide food for those who are less fortunate.

Well on Friday she decided to check on her new found friends by paying them a visit.

The students who were happy to see her, displayed their gratitude for the White House junket by reading personal essays they wrote. The essays described how she'd made a positive difference in their lives and what they have learned about proper Nutrition.

Mrs. Obama obviously very pleased with what she heard each child share, then gave them an update on the garden's progress.

"It is blooming. It is bursting," she stated.
