Tea Party darling Christine O'Donnell may be brewing more ridicule for her fledgling Senate campaign after releasing her first TV ad.

"I'm not a witch," O'Donnell deadpans into the camera at the start of the 30-second ad released Monday.

Christian conservative O'Donnell, however, could use a magic spell to help close the near double-digit gap in the polls she faces against her opponent, Democrat Chris Coons, in the Delaware contest.

"I'm nothing you've heard. I'm you," the GOP nominee says in the ad. O'Donnell goes on to slam the Washington establishment for "trading favors" and "backroom deals."

"I'll go to Washington and do what you'd do," she says.

O'Donnell's ad puts her in the hallowed hall of political denials, which include President Richard Nixon's "I am not a crook," and President Bill Clinton's "I did not have sexual relations with that woman."

The witch controversy stems from comedian Bill Maher, who has been releasing embarrassing clips of the wannabe senator from his 1990s show "Politically Incorrect" since her primary win last month, including one where she admits she dabbled in witchcraft.

"One of my first dates with a witch was on a satanic altar, and I didn't know it. I mean, there's little blood there and stuff like that," O'Donnell said. "We went to a movie and then had a little midnight picnic on a satanic altar."

Other clips show O'Donnell referring to evolution as a myth and saying her love of meatballs kept her from becoming a Hare Krishna.

GOP Vows To Take Back North Carolina: RNC's New Ad

National Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele vowed to reclaim North Carolina for his party Monday and introduced a TV ad seeking to build support for the GOP brand in the state.

"Nancy Pelosi and President Obama and Harry Reid have certainly lost their mind when it comes to spending the people's money," Steele told about 60 supporters at an Embassy Suites hotel in Greensboro on Monday. "I don't think there is any doubt about that."

The TV ad will run for three weeks on the Fox affiliate in the Triad, Rob Christensen reports. The ad asks people who are concerned that "President Obama and Nancy Pelosi are experimenting with America" to contribute to the Republican Party.

Similar ads are being run in strong Republican markets in West Palm Beach, Fla., and Cincinnati and Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Okla. The ad features Steele talking to the camera and was produced by Mark Stephens, a Raleigh-based political consultant.

Steele told reporters that he is determined to win back North Carolina after the state surprised many by voting for Obama in 2008.

UPDATE: The Democratic National Committee has a response to the ad. Joanne Peters, a spokeswoman, said in a statement that the ad seeks to stoke fear in voters by calling health insurance reform a "massive government expansion" that "threatens our freedom."

"Republicans have no real ideas or agenda to help North Carolinians and are relying on scare tactics and fear mongering to raise money and defeat President Obama. North Carolina voters rejected these kind of politics when they sent President Obama to Washington,” Peters said.

Obama Lashes Out At Campaign Finance Ruling


President Barack Obama on Saturday sharply criticized a Supreme Court decision easing limits on campaign spending by corporations and labor unions, saying he couldn't "think of anything more devastating to the public interest." He also suggested the ruling could jeopardize his domestic agenda.

In its 5-4 decision this week, the high court overturned two decisions and threw out parts of a 63-year-old law that said companies and unions can be prohibited from using their own money to produce and run campaign ads that urge the election or defeat of particular candidates by name.

Portraying himself as aligned with the people and not special interests, Obama said the decision was unacceptable.

"This ruling opens the floodgates for an unlimited amount of special interest money into our democracy," the president said in his weekly radio and Internet message. "It gives the special interest lobbyists new leverage to spend millions on advertising to persuade elected officials to vote their way — or to punish those who don't."

Obama said that means public servants who stand up to Wall Street banks, oil companies, health insurers and other powerful interests could find themselves under attack when election time rolls around.

"I can't think of anything more devastating to the public interest," he said. "The last thing we need to do is hand more influence to the lobbyists in Washington or more power to the special interests to tip the outcome of elections."

The court issued its ruling just as crucial midterm election campaigns are getting under way and as Obama's Democratic Party feels the pressure from a string of losses in New Jersey, Virginia and in Massachusetts, where this week Republican Scott Brown came from behind to win a Senate seat Democrats had held for decades.

Obama said the decision will make it harder to enact financial reforms, close tax loopholes, promote energy independence and protect patients from insurance company abuses — key elements of his domestic agenda.

"We don't need to give any more voice to the powerful interests that already drown out the voices of everyday Americans," Obama said. "And we don't intend to."

He said he has instructed his administration to work with Congress to "fight for the American people" and develop a "forceful bipartisan response" to the decision.

"It will be a priority for us until we repair the damage that has been done," Obama said.
