Giffords returns to House for debt vote
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, grievously wounded during a January assassination attempt, returned to the floor of the House of Representatives Monday evening to vote in support of a plan to raise the U.S. debt ceiling.
Giffords was met by a wave of applause from colleagues as she walked into the chamber to support the hard-fought measure, passed a day before a deadline for the government to face possible default.
It was the Arizona Democrat's first vote since being shot through the head at a meeting with her Tucson-area constituents January 8.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called her "the personification of courage."
"We are privileged to call her a colleague," Pelosi said. "Some of us are very privileged to call her a friend."
